I just tried Muppy005 with a Celeron300 and 512M ram.
Works fine for me.
Just two things I noticed

Mplayer wont start, I get this message

MPlayer interrupted by signal 4 in module: demux_open
- MPlayer crashed by an 'Illegal Instruction'.
It usually happens when you run it on a CPU different than the one it was
compiled/optimized for.
Verify this!
- MPlayer crashed by bad usage of CPU/FPU/RAM.
Recompile MPlayer with --enable-debug and make a 'gdb' backtrace and
disassembly. Details in DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports_what.html#bugreports_crash.
- MPlayer crashed. This shouldn't happen.
It can be a bug in the MPlayer code _or_ in your drivers _or_ in your
gcc version. If you think it's MPlayer's fault, please read
DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports.html and follow the instructions there. We can't and
won't help unless you provide this information when reporting a possible bug.


Thought I would mention it, But Im quite happy to use Gxine which works well

Except it doesnt play .ra files.

there is an alternative mplayer-dotpup, but it does ot support xvmc-accelleration:

Yes it crashes with any audio or video file.
I will try the other mplayers tonight.

it seems I must have been dreaming concerning UTF-8.
I now can't reproduce to get it working in Rox1.
The last 2 days I had used another pup_save.3fs to fix the boot-scripts.

Now today back in my old environment, files created with leafpad display garbage as in my last screenshot

So stay with rox2 as default?
I did however replace the icon "waves" with "gimmicks" for 006, what opens a folder with things like setrox1 and setrox2.

Must find out now a comfortable way to set up mime-types using update-mime, so that I can set default-actions.

Mplayer-1.0rc1 works well for me.
All sorts of file types including ra and wmv.

Off topic but, would you consider adding the application "Ipstate" which was made a dotpup by Guest Too. And a front end to iptables firewall called GTKiptables 0.4.2 to the next version of Muppy?

i think Puppy used to have GTKiptables ... i seem to remember that it did not work very well, and it was recommended that you just use it to get information from iptables, not to configure iptables .. i might be wrong

i seem to remember that it would not run at all if you had run a firewall script first

in any case, it is available as an unleashed package in PupGet

yes, it was included with Puppy 103 and 104 ... it will not run unless you disable your firewall first, or else it will crash with a seg fault ... see: http://www.puppyos.com/puppy-unleashed.htm

Humm... yes I did get GTKiptables to work but when there was the segment fault. There must be some other simple front end that could be a substitue? Sometimes I have upwards of 112 rules, like for DOS, floods, bad flags, scanners, syn, etc. Havings something that is easy to work with would be nice. Some servers have over 250 rules...

first of all: I like your Muppy a lot!

I encounter only one little (but quite annoying) problem (as with other Puppys too btw.): I cannot run the LiveCD or from USB because my USB driven Logitech keyboard and mouse are not recognized so that I cannot get on during the start-up process when it wants me to choose a language/keyboard layout...

Is there any way around this issue (besides searching for an old cable keyboard of course or any modification that can easily be implemented?

I want Muppy mainly for my USB stick btw.

zikarus, I may be able to help you. Is there any way you can run the following command with your USB kbd and mouse plugged in and post the results:

# cat /proc/bus/usb/devices

That may give a clue why your keyboard and mouse are not detected.

Yes, it is as I suspected. In 2.12 (on which Muppy is based) the script /etc/rc.d/rc.local0 checks for a USB mouse by examining all of the lines returned by "cat /proc/bus/usb/devices" for "mouse|trackball|netscroll|bt mini\-receiver". Your info contains "USB Receiver" which is NOT detected by the script.

I have suggested to Barry that the test be made on "Cls=03(HID ) Sub=01 Prot=02" which, as far as I have been able to determine, is a more reliable way to detect a USB mouse.

If you would like to test this, edit /etc/rc.d/rc.local0 and change line 191 from

[ ! "`cat /proc/bus/usb/devices 2>/dev/null | grep -i --extended-regexp "mouse|trackball|netscroll|bt mini\-receiver"`" = "" ] && USBMOUSEDEV="input/mice"

to

[ ! "`cat /proc/bus/usb/devices 2>/dev/null | grep -i "Cls=03(HID ) Sub=01 Prot=02"`" = "" ] && USBMOUSEDEV="input/mice"

Don't forget to reboot after modifying the file or Puppy won't save the change to pup_save.3fs. After rebooting, your mouse (and keyboard) should be detected.
