YES!
cool, thanks G2 :P

entered this in a console:
sh-3.00# export OUTPUT_CHARSET="utf-8"
sh-3.00# leafpad
sh-3.00#

Now when I save a "test-öäää.txt", tthe name is displayed correct in Rox1.
Must add that line to /etc/profile.local

Ok done:
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Muppylinux/Mu ... cepack.pup

I did not reboot yet, but that should fix it hopefully :)

Now just 1 thing remains: Icewm does not display äöü them in the titlebar.
Must search the localzationforum tomorrow, I think we found a solution already.
Ah yes, I must set a unicode-font for it somewhere in the configuration I think.

Hallo MU,
i tested the .tgz-file for umlaute. When opening with abiword, geany, i can read them. But the file in /root/ looks like this: test[][][].txt
maybe the reason for this are my changes i made zu muppy. so: i wait for the next muppy-version und test it on an "clean"-version before ading my kde_.sfs and so on.
i like muppy, go on.

vabene, then Rox does not use a unicode-font I think.
Ok, I'll try to make muppy006 this weekend with all fixes.
It will use rox1 by default again.

I updated the 005-servicepack with the bluefish-startscript and german-locale-file (it was at a wrong location in the iso).
You now should have an entry in debvelopment in the icewm-menu (rebuild the menu if needed)

There will be no version 006 this weekend, but maybe next.

I found out that some errors reported had this reason:
If you start from CD, and choose to use all programs, then the CD is mounted, and a file on it too, called mupp_212.sfs.

The content of this file then is merged with the existing filesystem using the unionfs-driver.
But this happens, when the initial Puppy already booted, and "pivoted" the init-system (/initrd) to the final one (/).
If you add unionfs after this pivot, strange things happen, for example probepart "hangs", so that the Media Utility no longer works.
Or that you cannot create a save-file at shutdown (I think that uses probepart, too).

The current workaround for Muppy005 is:
boot without "all" programs, reboot and confirm to create a savefile, then choose to copy the files to the harddisk (speedwizard).
Now Muppy works correct, because these files are mounted by "init".

In order to get it working also with all programs from the live-CD, I must put my scripts into /sbin/init of initrd.gz.
Just tried it, and it works.
Unfortunately, init is quite complex, and I cannot use "dialog" for the nice menus any more.
So rewriting the logic with new, textmode based menus will take a while.

I just tried Muppy005 with a Celeron300 and 512M ram.
Works fine for me.
Just two things I noticed

Mplayer wont start, I get this message

sh-3.00# mplayer /mnt/hda9/vids/Lisa.mpg
MPlayer 1.0pre8-3.3.4 (C) 2000-2006 MPlayer Team
CPU: Intel Celeron A Mendocino/Pentium II Dixon (Family: 6, Model: 6, Stepping: 0)
CPUflags: MMX: 1 MMX2: 0 3DNow: 0 3DNow2: 0 SSE: 0 SSE2: 0
Compiled for x86 CPU with extensions: MMX MMX2 SSE

Playing /mnt/hda9/vids/Lisa.mpg.

MPlayer interrupted by signal 4 in module: demux_open
- MPlayer crashed by an 'Illegal Instruction'.
It usually happens when you run it on a CPU different than the one it was
compiled/optimized for.
Verify this!
- MPlayer crashed by bad usage of CPU/FPU/RAM.
Recompile MPlayer with --enable-debug and make a 'gdb' backtrace and
disassembly. Details in DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports_what.html#bugreports_crash.
- MPlayer crashed. This shouldn't happen.
It can be a bug in the MPlayer code _or_ in your drivers _or_ in your
gcc version. If you think it's MPlayer's fault, please read
DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports.html and follow the instructions there. We can't and
won't help unless you provide this information when reporting a possible bug.

Thought I would mention it, But Im quite happy to use Gxine which works well

Except it doesnt play .ra files.

there is an alternative mplayer-dotpup, but it does ot support xvmc-accelleration:
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Multimedia/MPlayer-1.0.8/

And the brand-new Release candidate 1:
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Multimedia/Mplayer-1.0rc1/

Maybe one of them works for you?
Does it crash with other files, too?

it seems I must have been dreaming concerning UTF-8.
I now can't reproduce to get it working in Rox1.
The last 2 days I had used another pup_save.3fs to fix the boot-scripts.

Now today back in my old environment, files created with leafpad display garbage as in my last screenshot :?

So stay with rox2 as default?
I did however replace the icon "waves" with "gimmicks" for 006, what opens a folder with things like setrox1 and setrox2.

Must find out now a comfortable way to set up mime-types using update-mime, so that I can set default-actions.

fine. I did not try it yet myself, but if it works, I'll add it to 006.
Thanks, Mark

Off topic but, would you consider adding the application "Ipstate" which was made a dotpup by Guest Too. And a front end to iptables firewall called GTKiptables 0.4.2 to the next version of Muppy?

Thanks

i think Puppy used to have GTKiptables ... i seem to remember that it did not work very well, and it was recommended that you just use it to get information from iptables, not to configure iptables .. i might be wrong

i seem to remember that it would not run at all if you had run a firewall script first

in any case, it is available as an unleashed package in PupGet

yes, it was included with Puppy 103 and 104 ... it will not run unless you disable your firewall first, or else it will crash with a seg fault ... see: http://www.puppyos.com/puppy-unleashed.htm

i don't really recommend it

Humm... yes I did get GTKiptables to work but when there was the segment fault. There must be some other simple front end that could be a substitue? Sometimes I have upwards of 112 rules, like for DOS, floods, bad flags, scanners, syn, etc. Havings something that is easy to work with would be nice. Some servers have over 250 rules...

Dear MU,

first of all: I like your Muppy a lot!

I encounter only one little (but quite annoying) problem (as with other Puppys too btw.): I cannot run the LiveCD or from USB because my USB driven Logitech keyboard and mouse are not recognized so that I cannot get on during the start-up process when it wants me to choose a language/keyboard layout...

Is there any way around this issue (besides searching for an old cable keyboard of course :-) or any modification that can easily be implemented?

I want Muppy mainly for my USB stick btw.

zikarus, I may be able to help you. Is there any way you can run the following command with your USB kbd and mouse plugged in and post the results:

# cat /proc/bus/usb/devices

That may give a clue why your keyboard and mouse are not detected.

Methinks Raspberry Pi were ideal for runnin' Puppy Linux

Dear Paul,

thanks for your help.

I have no other keyboard besides this cordless (argh, I forgot to mention this detail before, didn't I?) here in my office. I have therefore run your command under Backtrack, which seems to have no problem with my keyboard/mouse combo.

Here is the (shortened) output:

Muppy-006-212 release?

#93 Post by puppyfan12 »

Muppy-006-212.iso
44e1488789d7ab00e7436633af1bd6ee Muppy-006-212.iso

Is this the real thing or a hoax? I haven't been able to find any info about this being released yet.

Is there an official website or something for the muppy distro that lists release and version info?

No, it does not seem to be a hoax but the real stuff :-)

No homepage as far as I know, but this forum/thread is the right address to stay tuned...

I uploaded it while I was away to work.

version 006:

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=13510

If I get no reports about serious bugs, I'll delete the older versions next week :)

No, no webpage yet.
Maybe in early 2007.
I'm too busy with work/coding. And maybe women, lets see what happens ;)
