(compiled with Puppy 2.10)

If you don't know what XFCE is: it's a complete desktop environment
(window-manager, desktop, panel, taskbar, session-manager...), it's
lightweight, it's good looking (see image), very flexible (you can use
only the parts you want, move the panel where you want it...).
You can save sessions (all windows get reopened at startup) and the
window-manager uses smart window positioning (i.e. new windows don't
just open in the middle of the screen, but in an unused part of it).
Just try it and see...

Xvesa users: If you had problems with xfce in the past -- I think
they're solved. You'll get info once you install the dotpup.


Ok, the "base" dotpup contains the complete XFCE environment, including
just about any "goodies" (panel plugins) you can think of (or nearly).
It'll give you a working desktop, "out of the box".

I've hacked the session-manager so it now allows shutdown and reboot
when you exit xfce.

I've included a file with instructions on how to run without various
parts -- for example without the desktop, i.e. with desktop icons.

There I was downloading Xubutu (uses xfce meant to be a fast Ubuntu) , when I found this - so I downloaded and ran.

If you have never tried xfce - you might love it - I really like its simple uncluttered desktop, very elegant.

Good job - I am running it on 2.11with xorg but would be interested how "Bonanza" beta testers get on.

Dougal, I'm not real clear on what this is good for, but I think I'd like to try it. If I don't like it, is it easy to get rid of, and will it leave my original settings all messed up? Or just to be safe should I burn a new DVD and start fresh?

I've played with some other xfce packages, and I always wound up making a big mess. The only exceptions were Dougal's small packages and the panel that MU packaged.

It's basically another window manager, like JWM, IceWM, FVWM, Fluxbox, etc. Except it does a little more. It has an excellent little panel thing.

One thing I like doing is setting the clock plugin (the one that's on by default) to analogue, then activating the date-time plugin to show the date (format: %A%n%m-%d-%Y) and digital time. Very nice.

I always forget how much I like xfce when I stop using if for a while. I'm giving it one more chance for the next Pizzapup. If it doesn't do funny things it's in. So far it seems much more stable than the other packages I was trying since using Puppy 2.xx.

Also, that themes package contains some nice ones, especially FBX and Gorilla. There are other good ones, but they don't look right with the color scheme I'm running right now so I didn't notice them.


Does this package mess with the fonts? Firefox looks, I don't know, fresher. I'm using the same gtk theme I had before. Maybe it's just me.

Not a bad thing though.

Having fun with 2.11beta & the collection of dotpups. I have been conserned with visual problems following the 2.02 versions, The problems with video has kept me in 2.02 custom version I hacked together a while back.
It is nice to have clean, non-glichy, interface to play with. This works well with gxine in full screen, still playing around with xfce themes - great work Dougal

Flash: it registers with PupGet, so you can always remove it entirely.
The only things left behind will be a couple of "if"s in .xinitrc (harmless) and the jwm menu-entry which you can always comment out/ remove.

Thanks, Dougal. I tried it yesterday and I like it. SeaMonkey seems to respond to the "Back" button more quickly.

Really is my fav window manager - People are saying it can compare with KDE and Gnome. Yes. Faster and simpler - very usable.

This is just fabulous Dougal! I installed it into my Puppy 2.11 and it's awesome! How you ever managed to get a 30+meg programme down to this size is completely beyond me. I mean, I realise that you've cut out some of the graphics here and there (eq: Addons panel) and such but this has so many features that it amazes me. Plus it's blazing-fast!

For me it's always been a toss-up between IceWM and Xfce. I love them both because of their speed, light-weight, and versatility. Yet yours Dougal really takes the cake and deserves an award in my book!

The magic that you and MU work on this forum just leave me in total awe.

Thanks dougal, first time I've tried Xfce and I'd have to say I like it.

It worked just fine in Puppy 2.12Beta. And it's very fast.

Dougal, when I tried the xfce dotpup on my main machine, I was able to configure it with no problem. When I tried it on a different machine (with a 1360 x 768 LCD monitor and which dmesg says has a VIA AGP video adapter with a Twister-K/KT133x/KM133 chipset) it started with such coarse resolution (720 x 400) that much of the desktop doesn't show at all and I can't reconfigure it with the GUI.

I did notice there was something about how to deal with this problem, in the helpful readme you put in the installation. Naturally I didn't stop to read it before I installed the dotpup and started it.

I was able to go back to JWM, but I'd like to use xfce instead. I don't know where to find the note that showed up after I installed the dotpup. What to do?

I had to manually search that file out myself for the bit about the session manager.

So far it seems very stable. As of now I plan to use this in a slightly tweaked form in Pizzapup. If it gets glitchy between now and then I'll go back to IceWM, but I think it will be fine. My other computer is still running 109CE with your old xfce package (since May) and doesn't seem to have any problems either.

It was never 30MB and I actually didn't really leave anything out. I think you're confusing it with the xfce-4.4 RC's that are being used by the likes of Xubuntu (the current Xubuntu uses RC1 and the previous used the beta).
This is the last stable release, from about a year ago.

I compiled 4.4RC1 a while ago (RC2 was released a few days ago) but am waiting for the final release. I haven't even managed to get it running properly... it still has bugs and is a pain in other ways:
I don't know how much I'll be able to reduce the size of 4.4 since they seem to have changed the way they handle icons, so now if a app doesn't find an icon it gives a segmentation error... this means that I'll have to include the XFCE icon theme... a few more megs.
The apps have also been made bigger it seems...

I also don't see the point in rushing to use the new XFCE since they re-wrote the panel which means that all the plugins have to be re-written... So there are nowhere near as many plugins for the new XFCE as for the old one!
