Can't go onto internet with Puppy

#1 Post by Béèm »

Got my stuff to install digital TV. A Philips ADSL modem multiservices was included in the packages. It's a modem/router with 4 ports which dials automatically to the provider (once correctly configured)
After som initial problems I got my Desktop (XP) and laptop (XP) connected.

Next test was to try my laptop running pupy.
As the eth0 was set to 10.0.0.1 and as the Modem is on 192.168.1.1 I changed the eth0 address to 192.168.1.20, but connection failed with an address not found message. The modem has my ISP's dns servers.

When I don't let the modem dial the provider and I use Roaring Pinguin to connect, I can get on internet then, but then I can't use my desktop on the internet.

How can I further diagnose the problem to have the laptop connect to the internet when the modem is already connected to the provider?
(BTW when I use 192.168.1.1 as URL I get the configuration module of the modem and can change settings)

usually, you just need to click the autoDHCP button in the network wizard

for Puppy 108 (i'm running 108 at this moment), you would click Start, Setup, Wizards, Ethernet/Network Wizard ... click the eth0 button ... click the Auto DHCP button

in most cases, Puppy should now be connected to the internet through your router, and to any other computers that are also plugged into your router ... and it should automatically connect through your router every time you reboot

Thank you both for replying.
Indeed, I has always be thinking that once an IP was attributed to the eth0 port, connection would be automatic through the connected router.
After booting puppy etho was at 10.0.0.1 and I made the experience in XP that the router wouldn't respond unless the IP was in the range 192.168.1.X
So I did ifconfig eth 192.168.1.20, but I got no connection.

Now I configured through the netw wizard with autodhcp.
I looked with ipconfig and the eth0 IP was still 192.168.1.20
I don't quite understand why, but I am connected now and typing on the laptop.
So i't great.

you probably did not set the default gateway using route ... the wizard does all this automatically

Puppy is easier to set up than Windows ... just click the AutoDHCP button

Thank you GuestToo. Indeed I wasn't aware if the default gateway was set and how to do it, so the wizard saved me and I know a little more now.

Next challange: exchange files between the two machines: Samba/LinNeighbourhood, but that's not for now. At 2:00 AM time to go to bed.

Be sure to check out the video tutorials on how to set up LinNeighbohood at =http://rhinoweb.us] Puppy LInux Video Tutorials. That should help you get things right the first time through. Good Luck![/url]

Thank you Rhino for the interesting link.
But I added two difficulties for myself.
1 - the connection between the two machines is FireWire (so I need IPv4 ethernet through FireWire) but I start to be close, I think.
2 - My XP home machine doesn't have a userid/password. I may made a special account with userid and passw for testing purposes.

I already tried the LinNeighbourhood and when querying on the IP I get the correst machine/group. When right clicking to browse and as I have no userid/passw the resources aren't displayed.

I have to investigate further, but I am about leaving for a 2 week stay in the Belgian Ardennes, so I'll take uo this issue when I am back.

I'll report on progress/non-progress made then.

if all you want to do is transfer a few files, you can run a web or ftp server

for Puppy, i just click /root/ghttpd/httpd ... files in /root/ghttpd/htdocs will be available to other machines on your network, and on the internet

for Windows, i just run something like HFS
http://www.rejetto.com/hfs/
HFS is a single executable file.
No need to install.
Download and run... it's up & ready
