run 2 instances of thunderbird?

#1 Post by AngelOfHope »

Hi, I was just wondering if it is possible to run thunderbird as root and as another user at the same time, with different settings.
This would be very usefull to get my parents also to use thunderbird.

Thanks

Unless you have two keyboards, it seems to me difficult to run a program as root and as another user at the same time. but I understand what you wonna do.

1 - protect root with a password, so your parents can't go into your stuff.
2 - reserve the other user for your parents. You will have two root(home) directories one for the user root and one for the other one. You will have two profiles too, but for extra security give different names at the profiles.
3 - setup the other user so they only can start Thunderbird with their profile. See how to do that: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Command_Line_ ... OS_X_users
4 - if you have already a real working thunderbird installation, backup first your data before doing tests.

Be very careful not to run 2 instances of Thunderbird as the same user. The second will happily create new config files over the top of the existing ones, and hose your settings, your email, everything.
