Hello.

A member of the Puppy Japanese Forum reports that, when ROX-Filer is used to show /proc, it stops responding. (The mouse cursor continues to rotate.)

I have recongnized the same issue, too. There is nothing but to kill ROX-Filer, and it results in having no desktop icons. To fix it, X needs to be restarted.

I am testing fossapup 9.0.3RC on my Dell Optiplex 760 USFF. Intel Core 2 Duo 3.0GHz e8400 with 4 gigs RAM.

I am running with a freshly made save folder. I did install Vivaldi browser and I downloaded the bugfix.

I experienced window and menu jwm menu flickering before and after adding these applications.

I did a reboot and continued to experience window flickering.

The window flickering resolved when I opened Picom and selected "stop".

Some comments on "big" 9.0.3 with adrv:

PPM shows tahr64 and xenial64 repos as default but not bionic64

kworker/u16 is using quite a lot of cpu? but it shows in conky but not htop?

Show desktop icon not too clear - and why circle with cross?

/etc/DISTRO_SPECS has some duplicate lines:
#Puppy default filenames...

hi bigpup,

can you try this ...
open window effects then click on 'settings' and change line 327 to
Code:

Code: Select all

use-damage = false

and then try picom again with vsync ticked and GLX selected
That change to line 327 seems to fix all settings.
Tried all of them.
No flickering.

To be honest. I really see no reason to have this feature. The effects provided by Picom are not anything I use.
As an optional add on, offered in Quckpet, would be good.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

No flickering OOTB in 9.0.3 on this laptop.

I do have the 'missing' icons in geany for example. Doesn't seem to be a function of changing theme or icon theme. I didn't try all, but did add in a theme or two and try most of the icon theme sets in the process.

No sound in the stock 9.0.3 on this hardware, no soundcard found by retrovol or using either soundcard wizard. Changing the active line in this portion of the .retrovolrc file from 18 to 37 has no effect.

Code: Select all

# Which slider to link with the tray_icon, identified by numid
#tray_control=37
tray_control=18
Doublechecked both in a pristine install and in my 9.0.2 update.

Going back to the 5.6.7 kernel from 9.0.2 gets the sound back immediately on this hardware. No fiddling with .retrovolrc or any other changes required.

Thanks,
hi Marv,

what sound card do you have? can you post the card and the kernel module used in a working pup.

also i would like to get to the bottom of this icon issue as icons are fine here on a pristine boot both with and without the adrv.sfs. can you check the MD5 of the iso you are using 9626d24fbe32fa4711a3575773f8d47e fossapup64-9.0.3.iso

cheers

hi bigpup,

it's good to have vsync working OTB for all graphic chips. i don't think this has been the case in any puppy before.

for those who don't know what vsync is,...

1. open menu>>desktop>>window effects
2. press stop
3. grab the top off the window and move it around the screen really quickly. you'll see the edge of the frame tearing. note this tearing will also be noticeable when scrolling a browser page or watching youtube etc.
4. click the restart button and make sure 'vsync' is ticked and backend set to 'GLX'
5. try moving the window around the screen again. there should now be zero tearing.

nouveau the free driver for nvidia cards has no setting for vsync. and with older cards the old proprietary driver won't build with the newer kernels so you are stuck with tearing

radeon does have a tearfree option (may not work anymore and needs manual setup) but it has never worked on my radeon so i've lived with screen tearing for years on that comp. same as nvidia old catalyst drivers no longer build with the newer kernels so you are stuck with tearing.

intel does have a tearfree option (note this requires manual activation with a config file) but modern kernels now use the modesetting driver rather than the intel driver which is twice as bad for screen tearing. i think the modesetting driver expects the system to have a compositor for vsync.

to sum it up ....
vsync :D
no vsync :cry:

i wondered what you meant by the show desktop icon but now see what you mean.

i haven't seen any untoward cpu usage yet. in htop you may need to turn on show kernel processes in it's options.

added the rest to my fixes list

cheers

v9.0.3 with latest bug fix and change to Picom line 327.

666philb,

Thanks for info about using modesetting driver.
Now understand how graphic support is supplied in Fossapup.

Was going to report visual issue about stuff looking washed out and not looking sharp.

Now with a working Picom, that allows setting changes.
I played with settings in Picom, until I got stuff looking like I like it.
It is now sharp and clean looking to my eyes, now!

V9.0.3 latest bug fixes.

2 issues with changing cursors.

Menu->Desktop->JWMdesk Manager->Mouse Cursor->More Themes
Clicking on More Themes takes you to the forum topic.
Not much there except the theme pet that Puppy has been offering for years.
Just pointing to this pet would be all that is needed.
http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pe ... s-1-1.pet

Menu->Desktop->JWMdesk Manager->GTK Theme->Mouse Cursor tab->Install
Is lacking in information on what exactly do you do to get more cursor themes installed.

Same applies to install in the icon Theme tab.

V9.0.3, latest bug fixes.

Vendor=04f2 Product=b52d Version=4060
Name="HP Webcam: HP Webcam"

I am not seeing any menu entry to run pupcamera.

Usually it is in menu->Graphic

It runs from terminal.

Same for guvcview.

Pupcamera cannot detect my laptop camera.

guvcview can run it with no problem.
Plus it has a lot of setting options and tweaks.

Taskbar disappears and Right-click Menu Incomplete

#216 Post by davids45 »

G'day,

After several tries on several days with 9.0.3 (checksum is OK), I cannot get a manual Frugal to get past shifting the drive icons from left to bottom, with a closer spacing as well during initial set-up.

The icons will shift but the taskbar disappears (screenshot).
So the 'Menu' button is gone from bottom left corner so cannot close down or restart.

When I try to shut down using the right click Menu, this is incomplete - the restart/shutdown options usually at the bottom of the Menu are gone (screenshot).

Ctrl-Alt-Backspace then reboot or just the 6-seconds On/Off button hold gets me out of this situation.

Strangely, when I tried to create a Save-file during one failing trial, the old dialog for a Save-file - not a Save Folder?? - appeared, which I then ignored.

I'm assuming it's something peculiar to my old Small-form HP desktop set-up as others have got to a working FossaPup64-9.0.3.

Any ideas, things to try, or obvious errors in what I'm doing? I have not seen anything like this before with a Pup.

Posting from 64Fossa-9.0.2 (k-5.6.7).

@davids45 - Re- no menu:- ctrl-alt-backspace will exit xwindow, (then can input reboot or poweroff), but from that command line, as your other issue looks like a video res problem, try this - run xorgwizard, select set screen res, then choose res (1366x768?) then select done. Then run xwin.

hi davids45,

the drive icon manager is working ok for me and i can set the icons at their maximum closeness and leftness .
the desktop drive icons are managed by Rox and various scripts in /usr/local/pup_event, none of which call JWM as far as i can tell.

the task bar can disappear and menus become broken when you have a broken JWM config somewhere. please run

Code: Select all

jwm -p
and it should show where the problem lies (please post here).

When I'm typing into the terminal

Code: Select all

jwm -p
it returns

I searched the JWM files, but only timidity has

Removing them from the content of timidity's .desktop file doesn't change anything. The above warning still appears unchanged.

What's the problem?
