Backup /usr , then overwrite it to test that.
Must leave work now, see you later.

My, my, you guys have gone forward. Not sure I catch the drift of what is going on here.
Just for grins, here is the output you asked for Mark, even though edoc already gave you some:
| Code: | sh-3.00# ls -l /usr/lib/libpango*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 24 Oct 14 16:22 /usr/lib/libpango-1.0.so.0 -> libpango-1.0.so.0.1200.2

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 29 Aug 7 10:23 /usr/lib/libpangocairo-1.0.so -> libpangocairo-1.0.so.0.1003.1

The symlinks point differently than edoc's; I don't know if they are wrong:
| Code: | sh-3.00# grep 1003 /root/.packages/*
/root/.packages/PangoCairo.files:/usr/lib/libpangocairo-1.0.so.0.1003.1
sh-3.00# |
Do I need to repair Puppy's 1200 library too? Why did our systems get into this state, I wonder.
I re-enabled that flash after the earlier test. Am I supposed to dump it and replace it with version 8? It's a little unclear. After replacing it, do some symlinks need to be reassigned, or something like that? BTW my libflashplayer is the 2.1MB one.

Hm, that is a new one, should be ok.
Even newer than the one in my Puppy 2.10.
Maybe that's the problem?
Do you encounter these problems also with a new Puppy?
Create a textfile pup_save-empty.3fs in the same folder as where pup_save.3fs is located..
Then reboot.
Now at boot, you can choose to boot to RAM, or to use one of the 2 savefiles.
Choose RAM, then try wikipedia.org.
And look, what version is /usr/lib/libpangocairo-1.0.so.
If it is not .0.1003.1 , but 0.1002.1 , and runs stable, then boot again with pup_save.3fs, and restore the libraries as I described it for edoc with the tar.gz and the dotpup..
Apart from that I currently have no idea.
Hmm.. one last thing you might try.
If you are english native, you use the default-country settings.
I am german, so I ran from the Puppymenu "chooselocale".
I chose german, you would choose english.
Maybe running it, will update some settings required by seamonkey, to be able to display a multilanguage-site like wikipedia.org.
This is just a very wild guess.

Yes. Never got a crash with Puppy 202. Always get them with 2.10 and 2.11.
I followed your suggestion, except it is extremely tedious to get wireless working after a ram boot. So, I first verified that I still got a crash on dialup using my normal pup_save. Then I booted into ram and got on the internet, and found I could load wikipedia.org for the first time in many days. And looking at the libpango stuff when booted in ram, it is all 1200, no 1003.
I think you've got the answer here Mark!
| Quote: | Hm, that is a new one, should be ok.

Actually, the number 1003 is lower than 1200, so I'm guessing it is older, just as edoc's was.
I need to follow your recipe to get it all to 1200. I wonder why it was wrong?
I don't think this is a problem with language. I use English, and anyway I see crashes on sites that are not multilingual.
I'll report back shortly...

Well, your instructions were not idiot-proof enough for me.
In the end of the pupget and dotpup installer dialogs, it asks if it should install. I said no on the pupget (guessing that expansion was all that was necessary), and yes on the dotpup (don't ask why). The answers to these questions are not self-evident. We need friendlier (simpler) package installers.
It is strange what that symlink dotpup does. Before, two links independently pointed at a file, e.g.
| Code: |
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 29 Aug 7 10:23 /usr/lib/libpangocairo-1.0.so -> libpangocairo-1.0.so.0.1003.1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 29 Aug 7 10:23 /usr/lib/libpangocairo-1.0.so.0 -> libpangocairo-1.0.so.0.1003.1
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 23576 Jul 26 10:16 /usr/lib/libpangocairo-1.0.so.0.1003.1
|
Now, one link points at the other link, which in turn points at the file:
| Code: |
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 22 Oct 23 20:00 /usr/lib/libpangocairo-1.0.so -> libpangocairo-1.0.so.0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 29 Aug 7 10:23 /usr/lib/libpangocairo-1.0.so.0 -> libpangocairo-1.0.so.0.1003.1
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 23576 Jul 26 10:16 /usr/lib/libpangocairo-1.0.so.0.1003.1
|
I wonder why? What is the advantage of changing it that way?
Anyway, this is what I have now:
| Code: |
sh-3.00# ls -l /usr/lib/libpango*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 17 Oct 23 20:00 /usr/lib/libpango-1.0.so -> libpango-1.0.so.0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 24 Oct 14 16:22 /usr/lib/libpango-1.0.so.0 -> libpango-1.0.so.0.1200.2
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 202056 Aug 7 18:27 /usr/lib/libpango-1.0.so.0.1200.2
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 22 Oct 23 20:00 /usr/lib/libpangocairo-1.0.so -> libpangocairo-1.0.so.0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 29 Aug 7 10:23 /usr/lib/libpangocairo-1.0.so.0 -> libpangocairo-1.0.so.0.1003.1
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 23576 Jul 26 10:16 /usr/lib/libpangocairo-1.0.so.0.1003.1
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 48952 Aug 7 18:27 /usr/lib/libpangocairo-1.0.so.0.1200.2
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 20 Oct 23 20:00 /usr/lib/libpangoft2-1.0.so -> libpangoft2-1.0.so.0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 27 Oct 14 16:22 /usr/lib/libpangoft2-1.0.so.0 -> libpangoft2-1.0.so.0.1200.2
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 147504 Aug 7 18:27 /usr/lib/libpangoft2-1.0.so.0.1200.2
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 18 Oct 23 20:00 /usr/lib/libpangox-1.0.so -> libpangox-1.0.so.0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 25 Oct 14 16:22 /usr/lib/libpangox-1.0.so.0 -> libpangox-1.0.so.0.1200.2
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 37984 Aug 7 18:27 /usr/lib/libpangox-1.0.so.0.1200.2
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 20 Oct 23 20:00 /usr/lib/libpangoxft-1.0.so -> libpangoxft-1.0.so.0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 27 Oct 14 16:22 /usr/lib/libpangoxft-1.0.so.0 -> libpangoxft-1.0.so.0.1200.2
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 20676 Aug 7 18:27 /usr/lib/libpangoxft-1.0.so.0.1200.2
sh-3.00#
|
To me it looks like the only real problem is a single link, that points at the 1003 file. We have both the 1003 and the corresponding 1200 files, e.g.
| Code: |
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 23576 Jul 26 10:16 /usr/lib/libpangocairo-1.0.so.0.1003.1
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 48952 Aug 7 18:27 /usr/lib/libpangocairo-1.0.so.0.1200.2
|
...so can't I just manually change that link with the ln command? What would be the proper syntax of the command? I use it maybe once every 3 years, so I'm not too sure. Is it this?
| Code: | ln -s /usr/lib/libpangocairo-1.0.so.0.1200.2 /usr/lib/libpangocairo-1.0.so.0
|
<later>
Well I rm'd the old link and did the above. Then I got that 1003 file out of there. Then I rebooted and went to wikipedia.org, and it didn't crash! Woo-woo!
Thanks Mark, this is wonderful!
How the heck did those old links and files get in there?

pango is a library for rendering internationalized texts
http://www.pango.org/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pango
it has everything to do with text in other languages
i suspect that the pango library might be responsible for Gxine crashing in fullscreen too, in Puppy 1.x
if you want, you can backup the /usr/lib/libpangocairo-1.0.so.0 symlink by just dragging it somewhere, from 1 Rox window to another Rox window
you can make a new symlink by right clicking /usr/lib/libpangocairo-1.0.so.0.1200.2 ... click Link ... name the link libpangocairo-1.0.so.0 (just delete the .1200.2 from the end of the file name)
it's possible to crash Puppy messing with the library files ... i don't think fixing the symlink will crash Puppy, but it might
another way to do it is from the command line:
cd /usr/lib
ln -sf libpangocairo-1.0.so.0.1200.2 libpangocairo-1.0.so.0
of course, i could make a dotpup that would fix the symlink ... that's exactly the way i intended dotpups to be used, to help newbies that don't know about gunzip and symlinks etc etc ... it's a lot faster to make a simple dotpup than to explain to a confused newbie who has never used anything other than Windows how to fix their problem from the command line

You had to choose "yes".
As this dotpup shall replace the existing files, it must be installed again.

Correct. I thought it was 1300, did not look close enough.

the .so
and .so.0
and .so.1
is always needed (by different programs).
If they point to each other, you have to change only one, to change them all.
You also could let point each one to the final library.

Fine
These steps did the same as if you had installed my fixes.
| Quote: | | How the heck did those old links and files get in there? |
If you don't find them in /root/.packages
for example with this command:
grep 1003 /root/.packages/*
then they were installed by a dotpup, that does not register to pupget.
Or by a program, that updates itself.
I don't think firefox will overwrite system-libraries when it self-updates, so it must have been another one.
I created a PangoCairo dotpup once for old Puppy-systems, that should not be used in 2.10/2.11.
But I don't know, which dotpup contains 1003.
If you find it out, let me know, then I'll repackage it, if it is on my server.

I had already done that grep for 1003 in the packages, this is what I got:
/root/.packages/PangoCairo.files:/usr/lib/libpangocairo-1.0.so.0.1003.1
I decided to go into the Pupget manager to look at the list of installed packages. Interestingly, it gave me two "Pupget package clash" messages. One was for ltmodem, which is now apparently on the standard Puppy 211 ISO, where I had installed it myself for earlier versions. So, it cleaned the extra installed one out, which I suppose is good (haven't tested it yet though).
The second one was for pango-1.12.2. That was what you had me install, but I didn't fully install it. Strange that it should complain with the "clash" message. I did see a "PangoCairo" package, that I didn't even know I had. It was installed just before epdfview, so perhaps it was a pre-requisite for that, I don't know. I suppose it is the one that brought in that 1003 file.
It's almost as if, when updating to a new puppy release, everyone should go into pupget just to see if there are going to be any clashes!
Even after it cleaned up pango-1.12.2, it still shows PangoCairo in the packages. Perhaps I will remove that, and epdfview also since I use a different pdf viewer anyway.
Is this pango stuff part of the standard Puppy? I'm guessing it is.

BTW: The AMfone site is not crashing Seamonkey now. |
I did the frugal install as described here:
http://www.murga.org/%7Epuppy/viewtopic.php?t=12083&highlight=
Everything seems stable.
After I am comfortable that I have the backup protocol clear I will begin a systematic
load of WINE and the associated pieces for Flash 9 and a newer QT, etc.
Hopefully they will not collide again and create instabilities in Seamonkey!

Make a copy of your file pup_save.3fs from time to time before installing new programs.
Then you easily can restore a stable system.

Because I did the frugal install on top of an existing full HDD install so I now have:
pup_save1.3fs sys
pup_save.3fs
1.3 is the newer.
Do I ignore the original one?

I notice flashplayer-9 is still crashing the browser when clicking some links on web pages but is working OK on some other distro's I've tried. Also it's install script doesn't run in Puppy:
sh-3.00# ./flashplayer-installer
./flashplayer-installer: line 69: iconv: command not found
./flashplayer-installer: line 76: [: `)' expected, found 2
ERROR: Your glibc library is older than 2.2.
Please update your glibc library.
So it gives a false message about the glibc library. Of course it's easy enough to install manually and will work fine for most things, but crashes the browser when you click on certain links. Flashplayer-7 doesn't crash the browser but some websites only work with the newer version.

In case someone reads this thread -- the Puppy developers are working
on a fix to the Flash 9 mess.
It seems a shame that with all the money these commercial entities
have they would do a better job of testing their products prior to
release -- unless they have intentionally sabotaged Linux in favor of
MS.
There is evidence that the Flash 9 bugfix for Puppy 2.14/Seamonkey
1.0.6 is already working for many sites and will soon solve the problem completely.
Until the next quality-challenged version of Flash hits the streets.
