Yes this is very important. Most sound-producing apps are happy to share access to the soundcard (e.g you can play vlc and listen to youtube on SM at the same time) but not Zoom. Zoom needs exclusive access to the soundcard. Hence any other apps that could potentially use soundcard must be closed before launching Zoom.

If this is too much hassle, get a $5 USB audio dongle and use that specifically with Zoom (I did). And as bonus I can use it with the headset too.

Thanks for the replies and ideas. I pulled out my USB audio device and tested, but Zoom still can't see it, and poking around in the Zoom settings locks it up. In the Zoom settings Audio tab there is no option available for microphone, and the sliders do not work.
I will download the update soon, in case it addresses my issues, but if you have any insights, I'd appreciate them. I'm likely to use another service for now.

By the way, thanks for the timely creation of this, step!

dr.Dan, which version of Fatdog you're using?

This seems to be a problem with libapulse. Please uninstall libapulse and try it again. If it works the install the latest version of libapulse from gslapt, and then try again.

Earlier in this thread I mentioned that sometimes Zoom may not display the mouse pointer to the remote viewers. So far this issue has been noticed only when 1) there are three or more partecipants to the meeting; 2) you are sharing your desktop.

As a countermeasure you can use the following utility, which draws a mouse pointer trail so remote viewers can see your mouse as it moves.

Fatdog64 8xx users should install it from Gslapt Package Manager in Fatdog64 Control Panel > System:
1) Click update to get the latest package list
2) Search for "pointerpointer"
3) Scroll down to the end of the search results list and select the last pointerpointer package, right click and select Install
4) Click Execute

The Gslapt Summary window should tell you that three packages are about to be installed:
pointerpointer 1.0.0 noarch-3 (new)
find-cursor 1.4_pp1 x86_64-1 (new)
yad_gtk2 0.42.0_12 x86_64-1 (upgrade)

Click OK, wait for the "successfully installed" prompt; you are ready to run pointerpointer.

All three packages are required. If you get different results read "Troubleshooting" below.
Assuming all went well, start pointerpointer from System Menu > Desktop > Pointerpointer.

Troubleshooting

* Gslapt says that some dependency is missing or broken.
Restart Gslapt and repeat the steps above.

* Gslapt doesn't list yad_gtk2 in the packages to be installed.
Most likely you had already upgraded yad to the latest version.

Also, click the Help button for more information.

Still on 802 on this laptop, but I've got a new disk set up and ready to swap in to move to 810.

I'll try that and let you know how it goes in 802. I may try it on my other laptop testing 810 as well.

edit: Removing libapulse slowed Zoom startup down significantly, and slowed opening of the Audio settings tab by even more, but my microphone became visible. It did not complete the speaker and microphone tests successfully. Moving the sliders is a 20 to 30 second activity. Zoom wants it's Pulse emulation, but doesn't work with it.

I upgraded libapulse to 0.1.2019.10, and Zoom could not see the microphone again.

UberConference is having better results here, but I'll keep testing Zoom.

Y'know, I'm really pleased you put these packages together!

Tuxtoo and I were scheduled to do some testing with the newest version of Grant's BackSeatDriver last night, but.....despite building new packages for it (and double checking everything was behaving itself!), it just would NOT connect via PSIP. (Firewalls were off, BTW...)

Anyway.....

We were both on Xenialpup64 last night, so I suggested we move across to Skype for a while. Despite chatting via this some days ago, and having an hour-long chat with my sister on Saturday, the damn thing wouldn't even fire-up, would it?

After interminable messing around, it eventually condescended to 'play ball', so I suggested Zoom to Stuart, and he got it installed at his end. After a few minutes figuring out how you work the invite system - e-mail/PM the meeting URL & password - we eventually got connected. And both of us were very impressed with the whole thing.....especially the screen-sharing stuff.

I can see why Zoom usage has gone through the roof this last 2-3 weeks!

I reckon we ought to get some conference calls going between Puppians for various subjects/reasons/whatever. I can see this thing being extremely useful in the short term, and in the long term, well.....who knows?

Thanks for reporting your positive experience, Mike. I had a similar case of replacing zoom for a failed skype meeting, but never with bsdriver. In fact, for one-on-one teaching sessions, I find that the combination of Zoom and bsdriver running together works very well because the (bs)driver can interact with the student's Zoom controls via bsdriver whereas Zoom blanks out its controls to all other Zoom clients. I mean, use bsdriver to teach someone to use Zoom.

When doing so, the teacher's cognitive abilities are seriously challenged trying to figure out which desktop via which programs the teacher needs to operate. Kind of fun, once you figure which is which.

Definitely not. In fact, as you know, jrb's concocted a re-master of Quirky April64 7.0.1-lite, built around Zoom.....but this is an older package, so wouldn't like to say how safe it's going to be.....

Actually, step, I'll be honest here; I find it easier to simply leave the SFS permanently loaded. Then, when an update's come down the pipe, I just download the tarball from the Zoom website, and swap over the 'zoom' directory in /opt.

Works every time....well, it does for me, anyhow. (I'm always 'investigating' short-cuts like this. I think many of my Puppies end up as 'Heinz 67 mongrels', the way I treat the poor wee beasties.....even though everything is functional..!)

Good, Mike, thanks, do what works best for you. I prefer packaging applications as SFS files that I can load/unload as needed. I maintain this SFS because I use it myself. Cheers!

Like t'Other Mike, I can and do jury-rig applications. But having a couple of computers I prefer self-contained ones; preferably transferable.

Hello, WoodLark. Similar experience. This, my 'regular' computer, apparently has no working webcam. I managed to get another computer (Dell Inspiron 15) which does have one, to work with Zoom a few weeks ago, But my image on the screen was pale and fuzzy.

Today I put the latest Zoom (thank you, step!) on a little Asus Eee PC. That seems a very feeble slow computer. But the image is much better.
Oh, it's BionicPup64.

So I suppose the Inspiron camera was not good?

Sheldon, I just updated to the latest version from zoom.us. I guess you can just replace the previous SFS you've been using with the new one. I have only verified that the new one starts correctly in Fatdog, with audio and video working. I won't know if it works well in an actual call till tomorrow.
