Unable to get a normal wired DHCP connection on my Pi3 - works with everything else?? All usual options tried.

Not sure how the Pi3 differs from a Pi3b which is what I'm running but I disconnected from wifi which is my normal connection method and tested using from wired eth0 using 'Barry's Simple Network Setup'.So far its all working fine here.

Thanks, BM. Omitted the 'B'. Yes, did all that. Works on wifi, recognises the SNS wired and wifi profiles, exactly like yours - doesn't connect! Not exactly a neophyte at this game, but just occasional get inexplicable glitches - this is one! So, looking for a replicant...

Testing on rp1. Fail.
* Downloaded raspup-8.2.0-abcd12345-4gb-ext4nj-swap.img.zip and verified that MD5 checksum matches.
* Installed img.zip to 8GB SD card with unzip -p img.zip > /dev/MYDRIVE; sync.
* Browsed the first partition: three kernels, lots of overlays, I can open text files.
* Boot the first menu entry: Hardware name BCM2835 -> kernel panic.

Several things wrong in your setup - but you're not alone, There's a documentation problem in that the search engines tend to steer folks to obsoleted pages.

We addressed this issue on page 11 of this thread, take a look and you should be OK.

Thanks dud for pointing me to the discussion on page 11. I wasn't sure which part is relevant to my case, so I took example from your post on page 11. Last time, following the instructions on the Raspup release page (not a search engine) I had unzipped the img.zip file directly to the SD card device. This time instead I unzipped the img.zip file first then I dd'ed the resulting .img file to the SD card. Unfortunately, I get the same result, a kernel panic.

Have you checked you have the right file for your Pi?

The sample you provided upthread suggests you are installing an img for a very early model?

and that the card you're using is compatible with your Pi?

Yes, as I wrote above I do have an rpi 1 B, an early model. Yes, the SD card is compatible with this model. I have used both the model and the card with raspbian before.
I haven't followed this thread but perhaps you have and know the answer to this question: have other users reported success booting raspup on a model 1 B? Thank you.

Hi step,

According to the first post on this thread Raspup has been tested on Pi1 but there are few details. I guess it was most likely a 512mb model, they are commoner, so if yours is 256mb you might be the first to try that variant.

Have you tried boot to shell? If you get a prompt you can at least run from the command line and get a few useful tasks started.

Don't expect to get a useable desktop as you don't have the resources, the Pi Zero doesn't really manage it either, (For a responsive desktop, try RiscOS)

If you don't get a prompt all is not lost: There are several older Puppy/Pi projects most of which were intended for specific tasks and never got beyond alpha. Look for SAP, ZAP and Puppi - SAP (Squeezed Arm) was my goto Pi os for a time then I moved on to Puppy derivatives Quirky Xerus and Easy OS both of which ran headless as NAS & Cups servers for a couple of years each on Pi2 & 3. These last are not designed for Pi1 but it's worth trying for a command line. There was also a Fatdog but for some reason I never tried it.

And if all else fails Raspberry have just announced that the new intro level Pi is the Pi4 2GB at the same price as you paid for your Pi1...

I'm using an old usb adapter to bring up sound. It works great. It's a LogiLink UA0053.
The only problem is that it always comes up muted after the reboot.

I tried those steps to bring up sound on usb

- right click on the tray icon 'speaker muted' and select 'Full Window'
- click on 'File' in the 'Retrovol' window and select 'Configure'
- click 'Auto Mute' off and go for 'Apply'

Guess I'm using the wrong kind of glue to make it sticky.

edit: I should have added that the microphone and gain setup will survive the reboot.

What are the consequences if not so?

What about the firmware updates relating to the thermal issue in Revision 1,1 boards.

Did some testing

Raspberry Pi 4 Model B 2 GB Rev 1.1 w/o a protective case around it:

Raspup Buster 8.2.0 running at 48°C idle temperature with chromium and youtube opened up.
Watching yt videos in full screen mode on my Dell screen (1280*1024) will rise the temperature to 58°C (w/o cooling kit).

Measured at a room temperature of 20°C.

Interesting. Older cpu's with BIOS usually offer limiting functions beginning at ~70C. Those processors, although larger, were a lot less efficient than the RPi s and drew relative large currents relative to feature sizes, so don't think 58C is worrisome? Notwithstanding, I have passive HS on all models 2, zero and 3, with a tiny fan on the GPIO blowing across the whole board, ie not just the CPU/HS, and haven't noticed any adverse thermal effects under high loading. Of course, the v.4 may be different, esp. as currents are quite high. Always remember that must specify where and how T^oC is being measured. Thermocouple on surface?,underside?SW? internal diode via SW?

Prior ordering my pi 4 I watched some/many yt videos comparing different ARM boards. I was thinking about using one of them
as a desktop replacement. You guessed it by now a 'VIM3' would be the one to pick. But how many people would come up with further
software for this kind of hardware? I decided to pick a raspberry pi 4. For ram size I decided to use 2 GB as I'm not sure if the 4 GB
version will offer me any more speed on the system. Using it as a file server 4 GB will make sense but watching videos and reading
blogs 2 GB should be fine. Using my pi 4 for four days straight I will give it a 75+% as being able to replace my BIOS PC's.
System runs very well on micro SD as well as USB 3.0 flash disk (working partition).

Hi FeodorF,

I was surprised to find that I could work in usb3 by just putting a copy of the pup on a USB stick or SD card and booting up.

I also found out that disabled SD cards could be brought back to life by defragging them using GParted.

Failed getting Stellarium to work, but if puppy manager is downloading old versions, as was posted earlier, it might explain it.

My Pi4 is working well as a mainframe, but can't access Canada government PDF Citizen files due to Adobe not working with Linux.

hello tony,

I have a copy of Adobe_Reader-9.5.5-i386.sfs for 32 bit that works well on Puppy Linux...perhaps it will run on Buster Raspup, of course if you're working with 32 bit. But I agree, evince should work well also for viewing pdf's
