Forgot to add that if you're trying out either of the previously-mentioned chrooted browser scenarios, after placing the /cont directory in /mnt/home, you need to sym-link /mnt/home/cont back into the main file-system at '/'.

If you don't, the scripts won't find it. I've amended the original post to reflect this.

Hi, Darren/all:-

Now, then. Another wee 'offering'....

I confess to really liking tuxxx's VLC 0.8.6. I'd never seen the GTK2 version before, and, although a bit basic - modern VLC has spoilt me! - I think it's rather neat,

However, its file format support is, necessarily, dated. It won't, for instance, support the relatively modern WebM format, one which is now coming into its own, with more and more uploaded media being in this format.

Personally, I have tons of WebM stuff, and would hate not to have access. So; for those of you who are using the 'chroot' container environment for the up-to-date browsers, here's a .pet for VLC. This doesn't install any VLC files; all it does is to let you access the VLC 2.1.6 'Rincewind' that's already a part of Tahrpup, which forms the basis of the container, so.....just a bunch of scripts, really, plus a MenuEntry.

There's one more thing to note. After installation, you'll notice a new directory in /root, called 'Chrt-MEDIA'. The reason for this is quite simple; chrooted applications cannot access anything outside of the 'jail' while running. It's like a giant sandbox, in the way it's set up to run. The .pet also creates a directory in the root directory of the chroot 'jail', simply called 'MEDIA'. These two directories are sym-linked together, so anything you want to play in VLC will have to be copied to /root/Chrt-MEDIA first (otherwise, VLC will have nothing to work with!)

When you run the chrooted VLC, and want to open a file, look in /root/MEDIA in the file-selection window. You'll find whatever you've copied to /root/Chrt-MEDIA in Puppy itself.

Pet attached below. Hope some of you may find it useful!

-------------------------

EDIT:- (28th August) - Just to add, this sym-linked pair of directories will also allow access to anything you've downloaded with either of the chrooted browsers, so.....it's a two-way thing, really. Useful in both directions..! Smile

@ tanker60:-

Hang about, hand about. Don't go and re-install just yet.....

You're not running with the 'normal' set-up, are you? You're being awkward....., aren't you?? Laughing Laughing

(*hee, hee*)

Usually, if running from a LiveCD, you don't have a /mnt/home, but in your case.....running from a LiveCD, but with a save-file.....gawd. I honestly, truly don't know; it's not a set-up I've ever used before.

I do know ONE thing, though. You're cutting it fine, space-wise, with a 2.5 GB savefile. That Iron_chroot SFS, when unpacked & 'loaded', will occupy nearly half of your available save-file space by itself. It's not only a browser, but an entire second Puppy, sitting inside 4.3.11; runs out at around 1.1 GB.

I think we'll need a conflab. Darren, what's tanker60 likely to have with this kinda set-up? Any ideas? Will he have a /mnt/home, or not?

Just read the above post Mike and I am wondering as well - I only ever run as a manual frugal install.

Um....yeah. Me, too. Reading tanker60's last post, I'm still trying to figure out quite what he/she has done.... Laughing

Ah, what the hell. If it's working.....that's the main thing..! Very Happy

BTW; that 'freetype' .pet has made a hell of a difference to the way my fonts look in the 'Phoenix'. In the words of the song, 'I can see clearly now.....' Laughing

@ Darren:-

Cheers for the Tixati .pet. I've been hunting high & low to find an older package (the 2.57 package I currently use is no longer the latest, but it won't run in 4.3.11). I'm downloading 'Timecop' with Jean-Claude Van Damme as I type this.....

And following Colonel Panic's observation about Xcalc, and alternate skins, I had a look around for galculator, my favourite calc by a mile. Here's a package from the 'puppy-packages-4' repo at Ibiblio:-

BTW:-

Do we have a screenshot tool that works natively in 4.3.11? I'm currently using an old favourite from my WinXP days under WINE; none of the usual suspects seem to want to work here!
