No sound from Bionic Pup 32 on Toshiba

#1 Post by geo_c »

Does anybody know what to make of this, I'm not getting sound so I checked sysInfo. Looks like an IRQ conflict. Can I fix it?

Is this Bionicpup32 8.0?
If yes.
I would be using the latest version.

thanks bigpup.
the distrospecs say:

BionicPup32 19.03
Window Manager: JWM v2.3.7
Desktop Start: xwin jwm
I downloaded it a few days ago. Runs very well except for the soundcard. There are not multiple soundcards, just analog and digital outs on the card itself. Hw0 and Hw1, and I have the analog one selected.

bigpup, looking at the link, there is version 19.04 and version 8.0. Which is more recent? and can I just copy the files from the iso file into home? I'd like to give 8 a whirl and see if it fixes the problem, but still my use savefile, which is a frugal directory on sda1.

The one I posted is suppose to be the latest version.
Naming got a little messed up , because the name was changed to Bionicpup32 8.0 and it started out as UpPupBB 18.04.
That +9 in the iso name, indicates it is the one with the latest update.
peebee changes that +number when he updates the iso.

I would go by what is posted in the Bionicpup32 8.0 topic.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=113244
can I just copy the files from the iso file into home?
That is one way to do it.
Just use all the files in the new iso to replace the older ones.
If you were using Bionicpup32 8.0, the old save should work with the newer iso files.

Sound issue.
Have you checked the mixer settings, for anything not correctly set, that has anything to do with speakers?
Tray speaker icon right click menu.

Thanks bigpup.

I copied the files and it booted rather nicely. No sound, but I also booted a copy of Studio1337 v3, no sound either so I'm guessing ALSA doesn't like this sound card or something.

This copy of upup is a hard drive linux partion frugal directory, and it's pretty much instantaneous response. Very fun work computer. Sound would make it that much better.

And yes, I seem to have all the boxes ticked and the correct sound card chosen, but that error in the sys info seems to mean that there is some sort of communication error:

Error: Driver 'pcspkr' is already registered, aborting...
and:
snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1b.0: IRQ timing workaround is activated for card #0. Suggest a bigger bdl_pos_adj.

Menu>System>Pup-Sysinfo>Devices>Audio

This gives a lot of info, but I do not need to see all of it.

Post the info from the beginning to the !!Loaded sound module options

This should show what driver and kernel module is trying to be used and what the hardware is.

IRQ

#12 Post by geo_c »

Makes sense that it's IRQ, I'll have to drink a few more cups of coffee before I try messing with that config file though. I'm not a coder.

bdl_pos_adj

#13 Post by geo_c »

But where do I find that line?

SOLVED that question. Added a file to modprob.d that's changing the value, but I've jacked it up to 6 and I'm still getting the same error.

In other words I'm not sure where to put it. Does this go in the file created in: etc/modprobe.d, as suggested in the stack exchange site?

again, SOLVED that question. Added a file to modprob.d that's changing the value, but I've jacked it up to 6 and I'm still getting the same error.

I'll keep increasing it and see what happens.

SOLVED IRQ MESSAGE

#15 Post by geo_c »

OKAY,
so I jacked the value to 8, and I don't have an IRQ workaround message in sysinfo anymore,

but I'm still getting no sound,

So the next question, is there supposed to be a tick box to check the PCM channel in the Retrovol and/or ALSA mixer. If there is, there isn't one available. Maybe I should try a CD in the drive.

WHICH I DID, and still nothing.

In the recent Puppy versions. The PCM in Retrovol is set to on and does not have a way to turn it off.
It is always needed, so no need to be able to turn it off.

You should be able to adjust PCM in Retrovol mixer.
So make sure it is turned up.

So, I do not think that is your problem unless the mixer PCM slider is turned down.

Thanks bigpup.

Definitely not the problem.I was hopeful about the IRQ thing, but it seems like that is solved, and so now I'm at a loss.

I am also running my pups on another machine which is a Dell with only one CPU, it's not even dual core. That machine miraculously runs Win10, but painfully slow. Still the pups run well enough, though I wouldn't say snappy. I have sound from upup on that machine. Those are frugals on a windows partition, whereas the Toshiba are frugals on a linux partition, and that's totally the way to go. Blazing fast and versatile!

It's difficult to ever want to run windows. Though I still have difficulty with certain applications in puppy and studio1337, in particular Musescore, which is necessary to my line of work.

ALSA Sound Wizard>Multiple Cards
There are not multiple soundcards, just analog and digital outs on the card itself. Hw0 and Hw1, and I have the analog one selected.
Selecting analog and using it is usually the fix.

Here is something you can try.

Navigate in Rox file manager to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file.
Left click on alsa-base.conf to open in a text editor.
add this at the end of the file. Do not modify anything else in this file!

Code: Select all

options snd-hda-intel model=generic
Save change.
Reboot to get changes into the save and to get the new change used.

If no help.
Can try using one of these. Only use one at a time replacing, what did not work.

Code: Select all

options snd-hda-intel model=auto

options snd-hda-intel model=auto, enable_msi=1

options snd-hda-intel model=3stack

Thanks again. No-go with those lines though. The hardware all shows up in the mixers, both retrovol, and ALSA, just no sound.

There is a curious thing in the retrovol config that looks like this:
Attachments
retrovol-config.png
I mean the soundcard "Pro Mask" controls, when chosen and applied they always end up back on the unused controls side of the window. Maybe they are normal, but I don't know what they are.

That hardware setup part of Retrovol Configure has bugs and never has really worked that well.
The developer of the Retrovol program is no longer around and no one has really tried to fix the minor bugs.
Retrovol usually just works and selects what is needed.

I know you said you are using the analog device when you look in menu>Setup>ALSA Sound Wizard>Multiple Cards

Can you post an image of what it shows..

Example of mine. It uses the same driver and works:
