Licenses and License Issues |
|
Having fought my way through the various Linux licences over the years I thought it was time we had a topic on whats out there.
We all know about the general GPL licenses, even if we don't quite understand the differences. However there are quite a few others out there.
One of the latest to join the use everywhere ranks is ISC and to quote it;
Quote: |
ISC License
Copyright <YEAR> <OWNER>
Permission to use, copy, modify, and/or distribute this software for any purpose with or without fee is hereby granted, provided that the above copyright notice and this permission notice appear in all copies.
THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND ISC DISCLAIMS ALL WARRANTIES WITH REGARD TO THIS SOFTWARE INCLUDING ALL IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS. IN NO EVENT SHALL ISC BE LIABLE FOR ANY SPECIAL, DIRECT, INDIRECT, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES OR ANY DAMAGES WHATSOEVER RESULTING FROM LOSS OF USE, DATA OR PROFITS, WHETHER IN AN ACTION OF CONTRACT, NEGLIGENCE OR OTHER TORTIOUS ACTION, ARISING OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH THE USE OR PERFORMANCE OF THIS SOFTWARE.

The best basic reference to start for all the licenses i've found,even though it doesn't give you individual URL's is at githubs https://help.github.com/en/articles/licensing-a-repository#disclaimer, some of them can be found at https://opensource.org/licenses, but a simple search should find the one you are looking for.

The terms and conditions on this license are too weak. Any person (or corporation) can use or modify the code, but need not disclose the work they have done. In other words, any profit-seeker can take hours or weeks of work done by others and use it for commercial gain - and do that legally.
