Chat? Wot u say! [salved]
I have been into IRC by clicking on the chat icon in puppy8.
Loads of people each time but no one conversing?
What's happening? Do I have to start the party?

You are experiencing the time-honored tradition of Lurking. #puppylinux, like so many other IRC channels, is afflicted with a large number of folks who are on the channels and either asleep, have been lobotomized or even dead.Lobster wrote:I have been into IRC by clicking on the chat icon in puppy8. ...

To make matters even worse, many IRC channels are controlled by "absentee owners" who are not active.
The Puppy IRC channel reminds me of amateur radio. People turn on their radios, hear no activity and assume the bands are dead...and if you think about it, they are dead because no one is transmitting.
Perhaps you could generate activity by posting something that will ring some bells...maybe "Microsoft buys Puppy Linux", or "Linux will require purchasing a user license in 2020".
I suspect even that type of post will not generate much activity.
Join #puppylinux on IRC....it's as exciting as watching clothes dry at the laundromat.

terribly helpful.
why not hang out on the channel for a few days and get a real impression? Or even help with support? Btw., 100 lurkers isn't an anomaly on an old chan.
seen it to late to answer, but with 22 minutes from first line to quit, you have already beaten the avg. user patience, at 3min appx..
and ok, I had to grin, a bit

SO let's see...if 100 of us hung out on the channel for a few days, and did not post, the channel would still be inactive and a vast wasteland. Or you could hang out, set the alerts to tell you a post was made, and wait to hear a beep, and then rush back to the IRC window.aloo-shu wrote:terribly helpful.

But wait, would you hear the beep if you were listening to music?

Hi Awsome Lama Lobster !
Probably one Scene from a Script of the Film called:
"Tibetan Book of the Dead "
"Enter the Void"
Music "The Beatles" :

Second (of the six) Bardos ????

Now when the Bardo of Dying dawns upon me,
I will abandon all grasping, yearning, and attachment,
Enter undistracted into clear awareness of the Teaching,
And eject my Consciousness into the Space of unborn Rigpa;
As I leave this compound Body of Flesh and Blood
I will know it to be a transitory illusion.

Re: Chat? Wot u say!
Some don't have an alert enabled, just leave it running in the background and drop in once in a while to scroll back and see what the chatter might have been recently. And if someone puts out a shout for help and also leaves that in the background rather than disconnecting, then sooner or later (could be hours) someone will drop in and reply - if they're still seen to be connected. Which can focus both parties down to being on at the same time and having a chat.tlchost wrote:You are experiencing the time-honored tradition of Lurking. #puppylinux, like so many other IRC channels, is afflicted with a large number of folks who are on the channels and either asleep, have been lobotomized or even dead.Lobster wrote:I have been into IRC by clicking on the chat icon in puppy8. ...

More often however, many drop in and relatively quickly disconnect again upon seeing it quiet. Or do post something, but disconnect after a few minutes (or less) upon not having received a near instant reply.
