Pwsget Secure File Downloader Subject description: "Double Dipping" |
|
A really annoying bug with Internet/ Pwsget secure file downloader.
I downloaded a file from a github site, about 3gb. It seemed to be trundling along
doing its thing, then it just started again as if it had resumed.
I don’t know what the message was, just some arcane one liner (forget now) and anyways I was making a cup of tea.
I checked the downloaded file, which was complete, but Pwsget was continuing to start all over again, and wasted 8gb or so before I had to shut it down.
It might have continued for gigs and gigs if I had unattended lol.
I noticed that Github gives an “unknown file size whilst downloading, like Google sites, which is a bit crap.
You get proper servers that tell you how much is left, anyways that is an aside..
If this program can’t be fixed not to “double or triple dip” , is there a similar app
anyone knows about that will have resume, proper progress and a download complete type dialog?
I seem to recall this has happened several times with Pwsget in the past.
I want to like it, but am willing to rip that sucker out of Puppy if need be.

Is it possible that a sha1-sum or md5-sum did not match?

Hi 8Geee,
I seem to remember a post yonks ago by Micko, where he fixed double dipping in puppy package manager.
I think it is kind of like that bug in the script, but I don't know.
I guess most people just use the browser for everything nowadays, including downloader.
There are a couple of regular bugs that have been fixed in earlier Puppies, and then they resurface again..
I think I will just find something more reliable.

Ok I found something called Uget, available in Puppy Package Manager (yay),
and Barry's offers to trim the fat on it.
Looks good, as long as it will not double dip , will test it over a period.
Maybe everyone elses Pwsget works fine with 3gb (ahem 6gb) files!

I've made a pet for Uget V2.0.8, and managed to get it down from 48mb, to a more puppy like 3878k, by removing the excess themes icons and superfluous big boy linux stuff. It's in Smokey's Artful music2go repo if anyone wants to try it as a downloader.
