Very disappointing that Flash doesn't respond at all (also not to my 2 PM's about this).
So we can only guess what's his reason to not make it sticky (or/and not respond), I think because there's so much disagreement and negativity about the existence of "not-real-puppy" projects in this forum, but again, just guessing...

hi wiak

do not make the mistake
that because this thread received some negative comments
and the moderators did not respond

that this work
and all your work in general
is not greatly appreciated

one of the things i have learned the hard way
about this forum
and possibly the forum venue itself

is that overwhelmingly the people who appreciate things do not post
so the responses are self selected to be generally negative and apathetic

there are a great many people
myself included
who have benefited from and appreciate all your work
please continue to contribute

i do not think the forum administrators
have the time to do too much on the forum
but we do have to thank them for keeping the forum running all these years
with all their work
and at their expense

i think its worthwhile to keep this thread going
and actually people pay more attention
to a thread that has new posts
than to a sticky

i am going to keep posting on this thread to keep it up there
until we think of some other way to do this

i also think its a good way to showcase all the different systems on this forum
both past and present

both newbees and oldiees can learn a lot from this ongoing discussion

i will post again soon (like tomorrow)

best regards

wanderer

Yes, might be that. But that would be a very bad reason. The first post is about what is actually on the forum (and many of these not-real-puppy distributions have been here for many years); it's not about what should be on the forum. The forum admin/moderators interest should surely be to organise for what is actually here (otherwise it is being deceptive), not for what others feel shouldn't be.

If John Murga decides he only wants pure 'real' puppy distributions handled by this forum then the first post can always easily be changed to again simply reflect what is actually on the forum (be that only 'real' puppy later)... that's not a problem. i.e. The first post is simply a state of actuality, which is dynamic and naturally would change according to the actual direction/changes taken on the forum itself. It is in no way a post to insist what should be on the forum - just a statement of what is there to help newcomers and anyone else who finds the quick links useful.

So, denial of the existence of the non-real-pups, denial of actuality, would be a real ignorance and falsehood - is that the kind of forum this wants to be seen as?

hi all

what are some of the puppy and puppy inspired projects
that you like and use

i remember and used many of the older ones

micromuppy
201
214
217
pupngo

but i had some trouble making and using some of the newer ones

the controversy over old puppy stuff woof-ce and and non puppy based stuff
though annoying to many people
is an important topic
but not to fight about
to explore

the puppy community has always had a multitude of variations

how long does it take to make a woof-ce distro
if i remember when i did it with woof it took about 3 hours
this was too long for me

can all of this be shortened and simplified
if just a minimal distro is desired

anyways

like it said on the grave stone
"see you soon"

hi wanderer,

there's been a lot of speed improvements in woofce, on a ten year old core2duo laptop it now takes about 35 mins to pop out an iso.

i am really interested
in making a very minimal woof-ce distro
that is simple and fast to build
and that can be added to as desired

i think it would be useful to the puppy community

but i need advice

can wiaks makepup do it

i really need just a simple script
(i cant use git hub)
that i can just run
then i (and others) can
run it
study it
and tweak it
and maybe learn something

if it downloads the base stuff onto your hard drive
you would not have to download things over and over with each build

most of the time i would just be updating firefox

any advice on how i could start this project

this is how i did it when i made unicornpup.

1 . visit https://github.com/puppylinux-woof-CE/woof-CE click the download button , download the .zip & unzip.
2 . click on merge2out-gui and choose a pup (newer pups are more likely to work properly)
3. you will now have a woof-out folder for your pup.
4. in that folder is the DISTRO_PKG_SPECS file. this is the recipe for all the packages in that particular puppy. open it in geany and choose what packages to remove by simply changing yes| to no| at the start of the line. lots of packages are obvious like abiword & deadbeef.. so just start by saying no to the recognisable ones.
5. once done editing click on 'woof_gui' script
6. select 'download dbs' tab and click 'UPDATE LOCAL DB FILES' button
7. select 'Download pkgs' tab and click 'DOWNLOAD PACKAGES' button
8. select 'Build pkgs' tab and click 'CREATE PACKAGES'
9. select 'Build distro' tab and click 'BUILD DISTRO'
10. try booting your new pup

and then keep stripping by refining the DISTRO_PKG_SPECS . it will require some googling and some failures when you start removing libs.

my advise is just give it a go and see

so heres what i envision
(but of course cannot do myself)

script downloads base stuff into folder on hard drive

run again (with dif run code) and it makes a base iso
console only
from stuff in folder

now base iso is also in folder

run again (with dif run code)
and it adds
basic x and window manager to iso

now base + x is in folder

run again (with dif run code)
and it adds app (firefox vlc viewnior) to iso

now base + x + app is in folder

any additions are quick and simple because most stuff is already built in folder

corepup does this easily

but it would be nice to have a woof-ce variant

wiak, you may not like what remarks I had, but I appreciate your effort to do something different.
May I suggest that you sit down and go through all your material and all responses you have had from others, and then simply make a new thread, and in that new thread, refer any comments to that thread to be written in this thread - to avoid any cluttering of your original text.
I think that it will increase the chances for it to be placed as a 'sticky'.

I notice there is a thread in msc
remembering ancient puppies

that would certainly be relevant for this thread
