using Touchkit USB touchscreen in Xenialpup

Hello people,
Trying out Xenialpup 7.5 on a well-aged Samsung Q1 touchscreen PC. Runs smoothly -- I did have to install 666philb's atheros drivers to get wireless working.
The remaining issue: the touchscreen is not working. Tapping the screen does not seem to do anything. (I'd like to use the computer without a mouse, and with the Florence onscreen keyboard, so touchscreen functionality is critical.)
In Hardinfo "Touchkit HID-USB Touchscreen" is listed.
I installed the xinput_calibrator program; running it from the command line gives "Error: No calibratable devices found". Presumably because of missing drivers etc.
Installing the "extra firmware sfs" quickpet made no difference.
I then tried the old touchscreen howto, using the most recent touchscreen-Puppy4.1.pet file from there, and following the instructions for USB touchscreens to the letter. Rebooted -- nothing. Perhaps no surprise, as the pet is only being claimed to work for Puppy 4.3.x (in 2010!), not Xenialpup's 4.4.95 kernel?
Any advice? Many thanks!
