What video editor for Xenial Pup?

Is there a basic video editor I can use with Xenial Puppy? I need to be able to do titles and subtitles. resolution needs to be at least 720p. an audio boost feature would be nice also.

Can't say anything about Xenial.

Though, I'm using Kdenlive and Openshot from Tahr.
Results can be watched on Youtube (just click my signature).

Probably they may work also in Xenial (download from repository via Package Manager).

I, too, will recommend Openshot. You want a video editor that's simple to understand & run, this is the one.

It's easy to use, easy to get hold of (through the repos of all the 'buntu-based Puppies), and help is easily available, too. There's an entire tutorial to be found right here:-

If you're going to give OpenShot a try, though, don't get it via Quickpet. That's the Qt5 version, which is a complete PITA to get running. Open up the Puppy Package Manager (PPM) - Menu->Setup->Puppy Package Manager - and search for 'Openshot'. It'll offer 2 versions; 2.4-something-or-other (Qt5-based), and 1.4.3, based on Qt4.

I would advise the latter. True, it's a older version.....but there's very little extra the newer version offers apart from more bling/eye-candy. It's been around longer, and is more tested and reliable. And it's nowhere near as critical to keep all your apps/progs/whatever bang-up-to-date under Linux as it is in Windows.

Just my two-penn'orth, FWIW.

I have Xenial installed on my computer. I've tried both kdenlive and openshot. They both installed properly with no missing dependencies. Openshot will not open at all, Doesn't matter how many times I start the program and it just crashes. Kdenlive starts and I can add a clip but when I try to load the clip to the track to start editing, it crashes every time as well. Any suggestions?

Try starting Openshot from the terminal. It should give us some clues. (Rockedge, this ought to be 1.4.3, unless I miss my guess).

....first, and hit 'Enter'. What version, please?

...and hit 'Enter' again. 'Twould be much appreciated if you could give us a copy of whatever readout you get; I have an idea of where the problem lies.....I've sorted most of 'em during the course of installing OpenShot to every one of my Pups, and they usually centre around either Python or melt. Either that, or you could be missing the frei0r-plugins package; this doesn't come up as a missing dependency, but it's a critical component, nevertheless.

If your Openshot is a 2-series, then the problem will be due to Qt5, and I'll wash my hands of the whole issue, here & now. I've had zero success with Qt5, and haven't got the time of day for it, I'm afraid.

Over to you... BTW, is this 64-bit Xenialpup 7.5, or 32-bit Xenialpup 7.5? The procedure will be different for each one.

When I installed from PPM, I remember choosing "openshot-v2.4.1-x86_64". Now that I'm checking which version, both are marked as installed including "openshot_1.4.3-1.2"

"openshot --version" command tells me 2.4.1 (basing on what Mike Walsh says, I think I will uninstall and then reinstall and make sure I choose 1.4.3-1.2 version)

Hi All,

shinobar's avidemux-2.5.6, linked from here will do basic cuts, trims, conversions and combines, http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 398#865398. However, to use it you'll have to use PPM to install libvpx. Xenial's version of that lib will be libvpx.so.3.0.0 while shinobar's pet expects libvpx.so.1. So a symlink is needed. Open a terminal at/or to /usr/lib and type the following:

ln -s libvpx.so.3.0.0 libvpx.so.1

IIRC, avidemux uses ffmpeg for conversions. There's a newer version of ffmpeg in the Additional Software Section than built into Xenialpup.

Avidemux isn't in Xenialpup's /ubuntu repos. I'll look into building a recent version.

Edit: Ubuntu's Xenial Xerus used version 2.5.4, older than shinobar's 2.5.6. Debian Jessie used 2.6.8. Will see how complicated it would be to build a version for Xenialpup using that base. But, actually, the easiest way to get the current version 2.7.2 is to run the avidemux portable under wine.

Good, good, good. Glad to hear it's up and running.

Yeah, frei0r-plugins is an odd one. It's definitely needed for Openshot to function properly, and it is in the repos, yet the repository's checking mechanism never seems to pick up that it's required. So you have to install it separately!

Sometimes you'll get Openshot to fire up without it being installed, but the window that appears will seem to be completely unresponsive. That's because it always opens up on top of a small window that tells you frei0r-plugins is needed, and to please install it......and you have to 'OK' this window before the main GUI will function & respond. And because the main GUI is hiding it, you have no idea it's even there..!

The only reason I even caught it, well over a year ago, was because I was looking at the minimized window icons in the taskbar at the time.....and there were more icons showing than there were windows. So I did some checking.....and found the culprit 'skulking' behind its big brother. Having closed it by OK-ing, everything was responsive again.

I've had cause to remember the trick a few time since.

The Openshot Project (aka John Thomas) have added a few extra abilities to the 2-series, but it's mostly an interface overhaul.....and TBH, personally speaking I think they've wrecked it. The dark interface doesn't suit it.....and of course, they've built it around Qt5, which is way bigger and more bloated than Qt4 ever was. Unfortunately, developers are all building everything to use the darn thing nowadays.....

1.4.3 is a very capable release, and will handle what most people need from a video editor.

unfortunately i needed to install proprietory nvidia graphic drivers to get it working. so it won't work on some set ups.

Yes, you're right; that is one of the few main 'improvements'. Trouble is, I have over a dozen Pups.....and even if I could be bothered to install it, none of the recent Catalyst drivers will now work with my integrated card. The Xpress 200 hasn't been supported for a long time.....!!

The 'nouveau' drivers, and the various 1-series versions of Openshot kicking around the forum work fine on this old box. So long as your CPU has at least SSE3s (or higher) vids don't take long to render at all.

Most of my older Pups use Patriot's combined GTK2/Qt4 'all-in-one' builds (you get the choice of which interface to use). 2.5.2 works very nicely with most of 'em. (For some weird reason, neither his 2.5.1 or 2.5.3 builds would work for me; 2.5.2, however, plays ball very sweetly.)

I've even turned that one into an AppImage, too.....but only because Patriot made his packages totally self-contained, with all libs & Qt4 stuff needed for them to run. Which is why they're a wee bit larger (around 15 MB).
