How to use Simplecom NW601 Wireless USB? (Solved)

#1 Post by cthisbear »

I need a .pet for this nano wireless usb.

Simplecom NW601 which uses Realtek drivers.

I mainly need it for Dpup Stretch 7.5 CE

As I am switching to Vodaphone Broadband 4G, here in Sydney
until the NBN comes along. I have bought this for a desktop.

I just loathe paying the sh.ts at Telstra for a landline that I never use
because of every Indian scammer ringing me up.
Also they keep sticking the price up to give me the crummy ADSL2 speed
that I get, so I am cutting it right off.

Unfortunately I have to give up TPG for a year.
Some people hate them but MR Teoh at TPG is one of the smartest
blokes in Telecommunications in Australia.
And has saved me thousands over the course of 20 years.

I may have to switch Puppies but I really like Stretch
as it works on many PCs and laptops.

Chris, to clarify, you're running Stretch with which kernel?

Are you using the stretch-7.5_k4.9.101.iso?

Have you actually tried using this WiFi adapter?
I think the driver is already installed.
When you try to use it.
You do what?
You see what?

The Dpup Stretch 7.5 CE topic offers this:
Optional fdrv.sfs with comprehensive firmware (26-May-2018)
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

UPup Ubuntu 18

bionicpup

One of the Radky Stretch files is named >> puppy_stretch_7.0.0a2.sfs
so that is his second version.

Can't find that ISO at short notice.

Another ISO is the >>> stretch-7.0.0a1.iso

" Optional fdrv.sfs with comprehensive firmware (26-May-2018) "

Ok! I shall try and check it out.

Not there that post >> 26-May-2018

As usual thank to everyone.

Chris.

I tried bionicpup64 and the new Upup.

No luck.
Tried adding to the firmware...it did not pick up
after going back to xorg and restarting X.

I will try and save again to usb, trying this newer 16gig usb out
but my Asus bios hates it.

Previous save in Stretch failed to find partion on my other usb.

Ze work continues.

Semme sent me this...thanks mate...

for this >>> Realtek RTL8812BU USB Module

https://wikidevi.com/wiki/Realtek_RTL8812BU_USB_Module

::::

Close but no cigar, because I installed it to the other desktop
and Win 7 reports it as

Realtek RTL8811AUU Wireless Lan 802.11ac USB 2.0 Network adapter.

And isn't it amazing when I swapped and installed them,
none of their Windows wireless utilities worked on the different PCS.

That's why I love tech.

Back shortly...Chris.

To get the wifi working you should install the rtl8812au-dkms from the official Ubuntu repository.

sudo apt-get install rtl8812au-dkms
sudo modprobe 8812au
Or by building the driver using dkms from diederikdehaas/rtl8812AU git repo (support added for kernel version >= 4.7) , As root run:

apt install dkms
git clone https://github.com/diederikdehaas/rtl8812AU.git
cd rtl8812AU
DRV_NAME=rtl8812AU
DRV_VERSION=4.3.14
mkdir /usr/src/${DRV_NAME}-${DRV_VERSION}
git archive driver-${DRV_VERSION} | tar -x -C /usr/src/${DRV_NAME}-${DRV_VERSION}
dkms add -m ${DRV_NAME} -v ${DRV_VERSION}
dkms build -m ${DRV_NAME} -v ${DRV_VERSION}
dkms install -m ${DRV_NAME} -v ${DRV_VERSION}
modprobe -v 8812au

Yea I saw a lot of conflicting chatter when trying to id the chipset in the simplecom, if we can find the right firmware we can id it with
if a usb device

Code: Select all

lsusb
or if a pci device

Code: Select all

lspci -nnk
gyro has all linux firmware available for download as an sfs
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=97276

You can load the firmware as an sfs, reboot, run the above command(s) to id this thing.
