Thanks for your endless effort to give us the goodies!

Tested this on my new Lenovo yoga 530, and did not boot into X.
Do you plan to offer newer kernels?

upupcc 18.10 beta 1 updated to 18.10 on this hardware, Grub4Dos frugal install to SSD with 256Mb EXT2 savefile. :

           Client: Shell (bash) inxi: 2.3.40
Dmesg continues to be clean except for these:

Code: Select all

udevd[3253]: Process '/sbin/pup_event_backend_modprobe' failed with exit code 1.
Drive mounting and reporting is all working correctly...

Video performance, CPU and mem use at idle, sound, SNS connection all continue to be great on this series of middle-aged laptops. The 4.18.15 64b kernel is downloaded. I'll test that first in lxpupsc64, then in the upups.

Thanks,
Pups currently in kennel :D Older LxPupSc and X-slacko-4.4 for my users; LxPupSc, LxPupSc64 and upupEF for me. All good pups indeed, and all running savefiles for look'n'feel only. Browsers, etc. solely from SFS.

After beta1 (ie b2, 3 and this one) the ISOs do not boot for me on a VM.
Frugal install works fine on the same VMs
Anybody booted successfully from the ISO on a physical or virtual machine?

With kernel 4.18.15, it boots to desktop. Great!
Thanks a lot!

But, there is a lot not working... touchpad, touchscreen, cputemp, function-keys (backlight), HDMI output, wifi, and probably more... :D

For me, the most important is external screen and wifi.
I guess the HDMI requires a updated firmware for AMD Vega 8... (Ryzen 5 2500u)
Wifi: Realtek RTL8821CE

Any help is appreciated

The ISO boots fine now.

Another thing you may want to pay attention to is dbus and X.
X complains about not finding data for libinput and dbus-core floods the Xorg.log with missing /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket messages (indeed is missing).
As a result X functionality is very limited.

Thanks @mav

18.10+1 reuploaded with a fix - directory /run/dbus needed to be created before dbus started.

I tried to compile adbfs-rootless and it fails claiming g++ is missing. A symlink to g++-7 does the trick.

Module (CPU Temperature) not loading

#18 Post by davids45 »

G'day peebee,

So nice to try a new 32-bit Puppy in which most things 'just work' for me, after my on-going hassles with several 64-bit Pups, mostly with scanning and printing, plus various apps which need libs in different places for different Pups.

Anyway, back on-topic......
... all my sfs-added apps look to be running and I can print and scan on my networked Epson WF-2510.
One difference to me is the testprint page which has a Pup logo :D but the colour swatches are over some text - still readable but a little messy (screenshot).

Only problem I've come across is the module to monitor my computer temperatures is not loading. I've copied the MODULESCONFIG textfile in /etc/rc.d/ that has the needed module line and the module is listed in the Boot Manager as well.

But running sensors says no modules are loaded, and Pwidgets is blank in its Temp-CPU widgets (screenshot).
This has worked in all previous Pups so I'm puzzled.

Thanks for all your work,

David S.

Hi DavidS

The temperature icon never appears on first boot (known "feature") - it can be made to appear by doing an XServer (Graphical manager) restart. Or a reboot + savespace creation.

If you hover your mouse over the blank space in the systray you will probably see cpu details....

Module for CPU data

#20 Post by davids45 »

G'day peebee,

Thanks for your reply about my Cuttlefish's lack of CPU data.

It's not just the tray temperature that I'm missing but also the more details that come up in my CPU-Temp widget.

Screenshots show Bionic with the smsc47b397 module running (info in widgets and tray) and Cosmic with nothing even after several re-boots.

The module ( smsc47b397 ) needed in my HP Small-form desktops is listed in the /etc/rc.d/MODULESCONFIG file and is working in all my other Pups.
In most other Pups, the tray temp needs the module loaded to display a temperature or a 'doesn't work on my system' message pops up.

Could I try this module from bionic in cosmic? (if I knew where to look  .)
