Why? And can it be disabled?

@mavrothal

I am curious as to disabling all of these calling home stuff.

Is it done in a text editor? or in a terminal?

Would I as a novice user have to do this for privacy?

Sorry but I just started using Bionicpup64 8.0 C.E.

Start rox file manager by clicking the house icon at the top left of the desktop

Click the Startup folder

Right click any file you want to disable, and click Properties.

Uncheck the 3 Exec checkboxes

Some things you don't need to disable, but I don't want youtube-dl updating every time Puppy boots/reboots/restarts X windows. Same with updating the package manager.

You can right click a file to View As Text if you are curious. And also you can edit a file to disable it if you want.

You can drag and move files to the disabled folder. Or even delete them, if you're sure. Sometimes Puppy will reinstall some of these files.

There are configuration programs in the menu too.

#939 Post by ETP »

Hi Phil,

Thanks for the latest update.
I am currently running 2 copies of BionicPup64 8.0, one with the original jwm
and the other with Radky's FbBox 5.0.

A chill out video of the latter can be found here:

Has anyone reached to use VLC media player in Bionicpup64?

Many weeks using Bionicpup64 8.0 as my first O.S. in full install, and if I need to process some video, I must back to a Tahr frugal install aside Bionic in my HD.

Tryed VLC pet or sfs or appimage from various repositories... unlucky.

Hi watchdog. Thanks for the help.

Have partially success, but there is some errors in bug folder about this items:
vlc-plugin-video-output
vlc-plugin-qt
vlc-plugin-base
vlc-data
vlc-bin

although VLC start in an error windows showing this:
libvlc warning: cannot read /usr/lib/vlc/plugins/plugins.dat: No such file or directory
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'file:///root/%24%40'.

running from command line it shows:
[000055a84e19f4b0] vlcpulse audio output error: PulseAudio server connection failure: Connection refused
[000055a84df5a630] main libvlc: Running vlc with the default interface. Use 'cvlc' to use vlc without interface.
QStandardPaths: XDG_RUNTIME_DIR not set, defaulting to '/tmp/runtime-root'

VLC is unable to open the MRL 'file:///root/%24%40'
This may be caused by /usr/local/bin/roxfiler

If you open the file as text and it contains this:

Code: Select all

exec /usr/local/apps/ROX-Filer/AppRun "${@#*file://}"
then it will not work properly with URIs.

The code should be changed to this

Code: Select all

exec /usr/local/apps/ROX-Filer/AppRun "$@"
which should work properly with XDG URIs.

Code: Select all

file:///root/%24%40
is really this:

Code: Select all

file:///root/$@
XDG_RUNTIME_DIR not set, defaulting to '/tmp/runtime-root'
is a harmless error message. You can fix that by putting this:

Code: Select all

export XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/tmp/runtime-root
in /etc/profile or /etc/profile.local

This is my /etc/profile.locale file:

Code: Select all

export XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/tmp/runtime-root
export TZ=EST5EDT
case $DISPLAY in
*:*) TERM=rxvt-unicode-256color ; COLORTERM=rxvt-unicode-256color ;;
*) TERM=ansi ; COLORTERM=ansi ;;
esac
export TERM COLORTERM
I don't know if VLC will run using apulse. You can try starting VLC from the command line using apulse, like this:

Code: Select all

apulse vlc
if "vlc" is what you use to start VLC.

You might be able to configure VLC to use Alsa rather than PulseAudio in VLC's preferences menu.

Apulse is not needed. Open Vlc Preferences and choose Alsa output: default is Automatic which fails choosing Pulseaudio. Then choose default output card in Audio menu.

Yess!

Thanks watchdog and williams2.

Have now a suitable and decent VLC running (many complaint errors if run from command line), but enough for playing and what I want.

Sound OK setting alsa preference well, and found the mistery of 'file:///root/%24%40' editing the vlc.desktop item in usr/share/applications where line 144 reads: Exec=/usr/bin/vlc --started-from-file "$@"
cut the --started option, that's all.

And... a new step forward: How about VLC 3.0.7.1 ?

To be continued.

i dont think udevd is initialised properly in /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit

there are no /dev/disk/by-id/ symlinks , despite the fact that there is a rule /lib/udev/rules.d/60-persistent-storage.rules to create it, i also checked by putting my own .rules file in /etc/udev/rules.d and it fail to do anything for some reason on boot , you can fix this by doing a

Code: Select all

udevadm trigger
, after doing this all the missing symlnks and nodes in /dev/ appear ,
this leads me to believe that the udevd deamon is not initialised properly in /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit?

Hi,
udevd deamon is properly initialised in my machine; /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit, no need /dev/disk/by-id/ symlinks.
U can access via command line but udev is not implemented and udevadm is.
You need previously copy this commands as new to /bin folder and don't care about missing links. So udev is active as can see in Task Manager.

May be is not clean init but it works.

Just a heads up that wvdial has problems in Bionicpup64 8.0 CE. Neither the puppy connection wizard, nor wvdial directly can tether to my 3G cell phone. I get this:
root# wvdial
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.61
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ
ATZ
OK
--> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2
ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2
OK
--> Sending: AT+CFUN=1;+CGDCONT=1,"IP","RESELLER"
AT+CFUN=1;+CGDCONT=1,"IP","RESELLER"
OK
--> Modem initialized.
--> Idle Seconds = 3000, disabling automatic reconnect.
wvdial: utils/wvtask.cc:499: static void WvTaskMan::do_task(): Assertion `task' failed.
Aborted
root#
I got online by setting up chatscripts file in /etc so I could use pon and poff. But I know I would prefer the connection wizard, suspect others would also.
