hey all

recently I installed Xenialpup 7.5 on a desktop computer via usb boot. All seemed fine unless being unable to open some applications. e.g. When clicking on the browser nothing happens, same with help button and some other apps. My Internet connection seems fine though.
Can anyone relate to this problem or help me to fix it?
thx

Welcome asbakker, couple of questions first:

What are your machine's specs; CPU, RAM, etc?

Have you previously run an earlier Puppy successfully on it?

Did you check the ISO you downloaded against its MD5 hash sum to make certain it was a good download?

Was the ISO the correct architecture to suit your machine, i.e. 32bit/64bit?

I had a similar experience years ago when trying to run Tahr on my ancient, far too underpowered, AMD desktop... booted fine to the welcome screen from live CD, but then trying to load any programs or create a savefile was just too much for it. (Precise and Wary ran fine on the same comp.)

How did you actually do the install of Xenialpup 7.5?
Details?
Does sound like a bad install and or download of the Xenialpup 7.5 iso.

Hello asbakker.

Welcome to the kennels!

My version of xenialPup-7.5 from last February comes with the Palemoon
browser.

Could you please open a console and type

Code: Select all

ls /opt/palemoon/palemoon
and tell us the result?
If you get the answer
"palemoon"
or
"/opt/palemoon/palemoon",
you should be good to go.

If you get some positive answer above, with the ROX-Filer, enter the
/opt/palemoon directory and double-click on the executable "palemoon" in
that directory. Is something happening?

It may take a couple of seconds since this will be a first run, and
the palemoon browser needs to create its caches.

Keep us posted?

If the above works, it means that your desktop link for the browser is
broken somehow. Not a big deal at all to repair, it will be a simple
highlight and drag operation, but please report your results first? Thanks.

Add'l info:

Your Help button is probably not responding because it calls a help page in
html shown by the browser. Browser not accessible = no help page
accessible: this would explain that.

As for any other button not responding, that is stange. At the very least you
should get radky's famous "Default Applications Chooser" panel. This panel
is unique to Puppy, AFAIK.

In that panel, you can define the default application (i.e. the application you
prefer to work with) for spreadsheet, painter, editor, wordprocessor, and so
on.

Perhaps have a look at the sizes of the defaultSomething scripts in
/usr/local/bin, and then maybe look inside them with the "more" or the
"less" utilities (these "reader" utilities do exist in Linux, they are not a play
on words) to see if they are correct.

E.g.
-- you open a console in /usr/local/bin
-- you type

Code: Select all

ls -Algo defaultbrowser
to get a line of statistics about the file. The size of the file should be more
or less in the middle of the line (3rd field, actually).
-- then you type

Code: Select all

more defaultbrowser
This will let you look inside the script. (Please see attached illustration.)
If no specific app is defined in this script, you should see a generic line
saying "puppyapps" (aka Default Applications Chooser, as mentioned above).

IHTH. BFN.
