xenialpupsave file

#1 Post by stilanube »

When I boot xenialpup 7.5 from CD, no xenialpupsave ever comes up, even though I make one when I shut down, and I can see it on the drive. I want to attach the /etc/rc.d/PUPSTATE file from the last boot, but it`s not allowed. PUPMODE=5
PDEV1='sr0'
DEV1FS='iso9660'
PUPSFS='sr0,iso9660,/puppy_xenialpup_7.5.sfs'
PUPSAVE=''
PMEDIA='cd'

Where is the savefile? At the root of the hard drive partition? In a subfolder?

There are some new rules for searching for the savefile. It may now need to be at the root of the partition.

The savefile is on a thumb drive. I don`t use the hard drive, it`s never mounted.

Try plugging the drive into a different USB port.
Have no other Thumb drives plugged in.

Hi, stilanube.

Euh... As a general reminder, the user has to create his/her own pupsave file
for any Puppy. It is not created automatically for you.

The first time you power off or reboot, you are asked if you want to create a pupsave
file -- or folder, of what size, the name you want to give it, and so on.

Was your initial xenialPup session interrupted -- the power was cut off by a thunder
storm, maybe? Under normal circumstances, you should have seen a typical yellow
panel asking you the above questions before you boot down the first time.

Also, it does not matter where you are in the Puppy when you boot down: the Puppy
will ask you the exact same questions if you are in the original black terminal and
not in an X desktop, except the panel will be blue-ish.

IHTH.

Hi stilanube.

Your problem inspired me to revise a script I had done maybe a couple of years back.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... ost#999022
It should now be more universal. If you need it, just download it and follow the
instructions.

Make sure you are not booting the pfix=ram option. I see the bootup screen for xenialpup has different booting options.

Thanks, everyone. Internet access for me is spotty. I need to clarify. I tried using only one thumb drive, and in a different port: didn`t work. My problem is not that no savefile is created; there are several of them now, on two different drives. Rather, the problem I see is that when booting, I`m never given a choice of the available savefiles, and the computer boots right into the zenialpup operating system from the CD, just like it would without any thumb drives plugged in. Also, the .sfs files load from the CD, not from the thumb drive, where I put them as suggested when making the savefile. (takes longer)

You are using the first boot menu option, to do a normal boot of Xenialpup?

Not using the menu entry that says RAM only.
That one boots not using the save.

How did you burn the CD

#10 Post by mikeslr »

Hi stilanube,

Your /etc/rc.d/PUPSTATE seems to be telling us the same thing you are: Xenialpup has booted without using a SaveFile. The file /etc/rc.d/PUPSTATE is created in RAM on bootup. Like posters before me, I'd want to change the boot arguments on the CD [or make sure you're booting from a menu.lsting which is NOT "RAM-ONLY". But you're booting from a CD and your CD is probably READ-ONLY.

So, how did you burn the CD?

Back again...Yes, I`m using the first boot option. I`m not using the RAM-ONLY option. I burned the CD from an iso downloaded from OSDisk.com { or somewhere online ), so it`s read-only.. Could it be a problem related to my hardware? I`m using a new (with UEFI} HP model 255. When I unmount the optical drive, the drawer opens and I can remove the CD, so the OS must be put into RAM, right?

Yes, that is normal for running from a Puppy live CD.
All is in RAM, so the CD can be removed to use the CD drive for other things.

When booting from a CD install.
The boot process is normally expecting to find the save on the CD or the hard drive.

This could also be a timing thing. The USB drive is not detected, before the save search process is completed.

Could try this and see what happens.
Just as the CD starts to boot you see the boot screen.
Quickly press F2 key.
This should bring up the option screen.
Add this option:

Code: Select all

puppy pmedia=usbflash
Press enter.

Any help or does it not boot?

Thanks, bigpup! I edited the first entry of the third screen Grub shows me, by changing pmedia=cd to pmedia=usbflash. Bingo! I have to do this at every boot, but now I guess I could remaster the cd. What a relief!

You should be able to boot from a USB thumb drive.
Install Xenialpup to the thumb drive and use the save already on the drive.
I suggest using this installer to do it.
Yapi
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=107601
It puts Grub4dos boot loader on the thumb drive and makes all needed pmedia= changes to reflect using an install from a thumb drive.
