I had a Tahrpup 6.0.5 on a flashdrive, which unfortunately died and the Puppy and all the data were lost.
What measures can I take to ensure the safety of my data? Can I just copy the contents of one flashdrive onto another? Any other suggestions would be welcome.

Yes you can I have done it often - easist way I found to do installls these days is to mount iso and copy the contents to a folder then use grub4dos to find that install. Pupsaves will work with this method.
This of course makes it easy to copy the whole folder with contents to another flash drive.
One more thing and that is I would also back up your pupsave.
How much you write to it is the biggest reason for failure.Flash storage 5-10 years or more (depends on write cycles)
They have a write limit before failure.
If you can.finite number of write cycles usually in the range of 3,000 to 5,000.
Use one USB flash drive for only data backup storage.
That way it does not get written to very much.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
