vesamenu.c32: not a COM32R image boot:

#1 Post by andresgrad »

Hi there,

It's my first time installing Puppy Linux. I'm trying with Puppy Linux 7.5 Xenial 32 bits on a Toshiba Satellite A40-SP150 with a burned CD.

The error it shows is: "vesamenu.c32: not a COM32R image boot:"

I look up on internet and it says that if I press "TAB" it will show different options to boot. I have tried all of them and it shows: "xenialpup Invalid or corrupt kernel image".

I have checked the SHA and the code is the same than here: http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pu ... sha256.txt

I'm burning the image with Xfburn, from another laptop with Linux Mint 18.3 (Xfce).

I have to install the same operative system on a simmilar laptop: TOSHIBA A20-SP259, and it shows the same message.

¿Does anybody can help me?

I have to say that both laptops have Windows XP 32 bits installed. I have already tried with Point Linux 3.2 32 bits, Xubuntu 16.04 32 bits, Linux Lite 3.8 32 bits, Ubuntu 12.10 32 bits and they didn't work. I also tried with Linux Puppy Slacko and Tahr, but they didn't boot (they entered directly to Windows XP, didn't recognise de OS on the CD).

I was not able to boot all of these OS from a USB.

Hope you can help me to free both laptops.

Andres from Argentina.

vesamenu.c32: not a COM32R image boot

#2 Post by oldaolgeezer »

Hi andresgrad:

While you are waiting for someone more knowledgeable to give you the correct solution, I might suggest the following three items ....

from linux mint folks this post from: annabeel80:
https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=60436

*****Change the "default" where, at or near the first line of syslinux.cfg,

it says:

default vesamenu.c32

replace "vesamenu.c32" with "live" and voila!!!! the autoboot we wanted!!

default live
prompt 0
timeout 300

menu title .......

====

and this from the Redhat Linux folks:

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Create a USB disk with syslinux
2. Boot with the USB disk.

Actual results:
An error message at the boot time "vesamenu.c32 not a COM32R image"

"Syslinux v4+ is strictly incompatible with older COM32 modules as the format has had a significant change (COM32 to COM32R), generating a "not a COM32R image" error."

1) Try replacing the vesamenu.c32 on that USB drive with the version shipped with syslinux-4.02-3.fc14.x86_64.

The Red hat post is from: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=662557

====

And this from the ubuntu folks:

the error has to do with a mismatch of syslinux versions (I don't know why or how).

What worked for me was deleting the vesamenu.c32 file on the USB drive, and replacing it with the most recent local version (located at /usr/lib/syslinux).

The above is from: https://askubuntu.com/questions/85254/c ... mage-error

====

I guess from my brief google searches of the error message you should try a different method (or version) of making your syslinux flash drive boot software
(If your puppy iso modules pass their chechsum, this doesn't seem like a puppy software issue.)

Hope this helps until someone else chimes in.
