BionicDog (updated: 2018-06-04)
I wanted a CUPS pdf printer (to print to pdf file).
From repo, found printer-driver-cups-pdf that sounds like what I am after.
Installed it and have 2 additional PDF printers in CUPS.
I tried printing (from Firefox), all 3 jobs completed, and didn't give errors.
But where are they, what are they called? Don't they usually ask first where and what file name to create?
I basically want to be able to print (to pdf file) when in Firefox mostly.
EDIT:
Found this link, that tells me it's in Home (puppy) PDF dir.
PDF dir is there, but it's empty ?
Anyway, let me digest the link first...
http://keeshink.blogspot.com/2009/01/wh ... -file.html
EDIT 2:
Found them - in /var/spool/cups.
I was going to view them, need pdf viewer.
Installing evince-common..
Fred...pls help...

Hi Fred, et al.
I am running BionicDog on a cherrytrail 2-in-1 tablet. When I boot from usb dongle boots to desktop fine. However when I try to boot from frugal install on /dev/mmcblk0p2 (fat32, EFI-grub) it proceeds nicely up until it stops at 'searching for SGN'. I found the section in linuxrc (in initrd) and tried to implement a workaround. I also copied the bionic-x86_64.sgn to the initrd >/casper/$SGN. Nothing worked!
It seems that mounting partitions from the init script depends wholly on fstab, which is empty.
Please suggest a workaround, even hardcoded, that should work!
I am using a custom kernel, which also woks fine on same hardware with FatDog.
Cheers

Printing Webpage as a pdf
Hi dcung,
I'm not sure that you're not overcomplicating it. To print a webpage as a pdf, merely open the webpage in firefox --other browsers may be similar, but I haven't set them up-- select File>print, Select Print-to-file, Click the "File:" box, select the location to print to, and give it a name. Click Print.
Getting a dedicated pdf viewer is another story. But until you do, you can open pdfs in firefox: File> Open File, browse to pdf, select and open.

Obviously there's something wrong with the (older) evince package from custom Bionicdog64 repository and updating gives error (as dcung reported), couldn't figure out what's the problem, so decided to remove it from this repo.dcung wrote:I was going to view them, need pdf viewer.
Installing evince-common..
To replace this existing older package with the official evince Ubuntu package:
Code: Select all
apt-get purge evince
apt-get install evince

Sorry, I don't know, as said earlier, there are more reports of boot failure.I am running BionicDog on a cherrytrail 2-in-1 tablet. When I boot from usb dongle boots to desktop fine. /etc/fstab is empty on purpose, btw.
Does it boot on the same hardware with the default kernel as included in the ISO ?

That's the first thing I did in Firefox yesterday, Mike. Both the printing part and the viewing part (the pdf created by CUPS-pdf, after Firefox failed to create). Both didn't work. I couldn't be bothered troubleshooting it. I resorted to rebooting to Fatdog64 and I can view the PDF in Fatdog's evince viewer.
But, since I also in need of virtual PDF printer and (working) viewer in BionicDog, I realized I haven't got them, then I proceeded to install.
I am not trying to over complicate things, I blame Murphy for his law, didn't even let me do simple thing like printing pdf smoothly... .
I usually can work around most problems and find other ways to resolve my need at the time.
I am just reporting a problem found.
If I really want to, I can use/download thousands of pdf viewer (nah...maybe a few, not thousands... ).
I understand that you're trying to help me to view the pdf while Fred 'fix' the package or I have a permanent solution. No problem here, resolved already... Appreciate it, Thanks...
Sorry to report Fred,fredx181 wrote:Obviously there's something wrong with the (older) evince package from custom Bionicdog64 repository and updating gives error (as dcung reported), couldn't figure out what's the problem, so decided to remove it from this repo.

It doesn't work still. Maybe I have too many apps in my BionicDog64...(?)
After purging, re install failed, with 2 broken packages.
I tried it 3 times.
Once with 'apt autoremove' & 'apt --fix-broken install'.
Once with removing 'broken' packages in synaptic first.

Is there anything like ldd (list dynamic dependencies)
Hi fred & All,
With BionicPup64Beta just having been published, I really haven't had much time to explore BionicDog. One of the things I do under the Pups is setup external applications like foxitreader and masterpdfeditor. To do that usually requires installing some libraries, particularly Qt. So, the second thing I did to try to solve dchung's question was to see if either of those worked. I quickly realized that qt-libs were required. In the Pups I can run ldd (list dynamic dependencies) to find out which. Is there anything like that under the "Dogs"?

Re: Is there anything like ldd (list dynamic dependencies)
Yes, ldd is a standard app, so also in the Dogs. I run XenialDog and I also set up masterpdfeditor as an external application in my Dog. Easy to do in the Dogs also. In other words you don't always need to use apt or Synaptics - you can just as easily run apps externally with dpkg package manager unaware (not needing to know) of their existence. It is thus perfectly possible to keep a Dog small as a Pup and add as many tweeked and slimmed down versions of apps as you like.mikeslr wrote:Hi fred & All,

My guess is (when I see the error messages about files in /usr/share/doc) that it's the result of the earlier discussed bug from here:dcung wrote:It doesn't work still. Maybe I have too many apps in my BionicDog64...(?)
After purging, re install failed, with 2 broken packages.
I tried it 3 times.

So try:
Code: Select all

find /usr/share/info -type f -exec rm -f {} \;

to don't have to modify newer dog's 64 I would be interesting to add some *.pet or, better *.deb package of the terribly old but useful WYSYG HTML editor Kompozer as it was at the last occurence on the Ubuntu depositories.
according to the report of a French web page:
http://mezigoo.free.fr/Kompozer/kompozer.html
(this page is not for puppy / dog users !)
the use seems to continue to be possible if you accept to meet some limits (and continue manually) but to complex to be added on demand each time you need to use it.
has some one perhaps a package for it (or blue griffon, would be equivalent but really more heavy)?

That's my guess. Anyway, I created a continuation for the thread.fredx181 wrote:Anyone knows why the thread is gone now ?s243a wrote:I created a new thread where we can hopefully move the discussion of rufwoof criticisms into:
So called Frankin Debian's and other barksbarks

Unfortunately, rufwoof couldn't keep from making it personal on this one either, so it might also go poof!
Here's a Kompozer 64-bit SFS (squashfs module) for Bionicdog64, Size: 14MB:slackfan wrote:as old Puppy user (early Puppy did soon use the Mozilla Suite, the real one with the red monster!) For bluegriffon, forum member wiak adviced to use an older version 1.7.2 (provides functionality no longer free in currrent bluegriffon) see here (includes links for 1.7.2 version):

Added to Bionicdog custom repo:
- Xlunch graphical app launcher, see info here:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 32#1003532
Install with synaptic or apt-get:
- And redshift-gui-lite, see info here:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 92#1005692
Only difference is that it's packaged as deb instead of portable.
(and it will replace "redshift-gui" (if installed) )

Hi josepinto, don't know what you did exactly, but... here's what I did:
From:
https://www.xnview.com/en/xnviewmp/#downloads
I downloaded and installed "Linux DEB 64-bit", with right-click > Install deb
Then xnview didn't run, needs libpulse-mainloop-glib0, so installing that made it work for me:

I downloaded and installed the same Deb and in the same way as you.
It works now, after installing that dependency.
What I do not understand is how you found it? Using ldd?
Thank you for your prompt reply.
BionicDog is doing almost what I want it to do.
