I downloaded the latest seamonkey which I thought was 2.49

seamonkey

Seamonkey runs and I check it's version in the about box but it's Seamonkey 2.39, not 2.49 as I thought it should be.

I am now logged into my Gmail on Seamonkey

I keep getting blocked. Even google's email system thinks that someone is trying to break into my account. This sucks.

I've now enabled less-secure apps in google.

I restarted the email client and it downloaded the emails

That's good because I have a minor stomach ache right now.

I just want to get my emails stored away and archived to some DVDs.
h

I just hit a worng key.

Anyway, relaxing security might be what made google happy at their end.

I'd like to do this with other emails. But I better check how much room this is taking up. I don't need it for all my email accounts, just one of them.

I would like to some day re-enable security

#26 Post by PappyPuppy »

I don't know what browser/ssl etc.. combination I need to make it all work.

I hadn't normally been a Seamonkey user - I am now using Seamonkey. I don't mind as long as it's as good as Google Chrome. I wonder if I can use Google Chrome and log in and also use my email client as Seamonkey.

There's a lot of diddling around that I need to do - all of which doesn't get any work done.

Pappy, I'm gonna ease off and "share" in helping you get your POP/IMAP connected.

Always lead to failure with the same message Unable to ...

I guess I'll have to wrestle with this for an hour.

Final note: Open Gslapt, hit "Update" then search for and update Seamonkey to v2.48.

Unless you are very specific and detailed in what you do, we can not help.
You do what?
You see what?

Statements like "Always lead to failure with the same message Unable to ... " tells us nothing about what you are actually doing.

Step by step, what you do and what you see, at each step, is the only way we are going to know if you are doing it correctly.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

I wrestled for a while

#32 Post by PappyPuppy »

I put my 201 lbs (which should be 192 if I was in shape) up against my 15 lb. computer and I won.

I just kept setting permissions on directories to everybody can break in and it started to allow me to save stuff.

So at least I'm making progress.

As for the update to 2.48 or whatever, i'll look into that. It's funny - I don't know why my browser is 2.39 after untarring a 2.49 version. ??

PSS - Log in via browser and configure Gmail by enabling the POP feature of your choice.

Then follow their instructions and configure Seamonkey @ the same time.

Between this and the note I pm'd, you shouldn't have much trouble.

As I said above, things are working

#34 Post by PappyPuppy »

And when I type seamonkey -v I get version 2.39. I guess it goes off my path? Some final install I haven't yet done. Now that I have a seamonkey directory of the 2.49 tar, the one of 02-05-2018 build vintage, ie. 52.6.1, I should soon see version 2.49. It might not matter much which I use. I can use Google Chrome for web-browsing, sometimes use Seamonkey, and sometimes Mozilla. The IMAP mail seems to download mail now know matter what. Since I lightened security. I'll keep trying to upgrade things and see if I can tighten the security and still have it work. In the meantime, I can back up my emails.

Install directions for Seamonkey 2.49.x

#35 Post by PappyPuppy »

Then copy the tar file to that directory and untar it as follows:

tar jsxvf seamonkey-2.49.2.tar.bz2

Then change to the seamonkey directory and type ./seamonkey.

When I do this, it says sh ./seamonkey no such file or directory.

So I type just seamonkey and I'm right back into version 2.39 again.

So I guess I need to solve the problem that it can't find seamonkey in that directory - I'll check permissions now.

I don't know why I can't issue the command ./seamonkey.

I followed the instructions - could it be a bad binary file? 32-bit? I'm clueless. I will just have to run with version 2.39. I have no idea what the problem is and I'm tired of dealing with it.

How are you running seamonkey mail?
Is it seamonkey-spot -mail
or
seamonkey -mail?

When running the spot version you will get a lot of permission denied messages as it's trying to protect you.
Your profies are also in different locations when running with spot or without.
I HATE spot. It's always the first thing I change in /etc/defaultprograms.

There might be a huge sort of home vs. root issue or some link or whateve.r

What's the latest build when you do this?

If it's not 2.49.2, toss the pkg you've got --it's the wrong arch. You need this pkg.

Dwnld and unpack, then run your little ./seamonkey routine.
