Many thanks for this, jafadmin -
I intend to use your puplet for a "project". I gutted an old DL380 (G4) server of its 6 SCSCI drives (300gb ea) and installed them in a workstation tower with pci scsi adapter, cables etc etc (can't remember the mbo specs, but have ample ram etc) for just such a NAS function. The old server was just too noisy and much slower than I anticipated... Real-life issues have intruded on that particular project, but now that I have a bed-bound mother-in-law in palliative care at one end of the house, and we have forked up for a poor-man's smart tv, I hope to return to the issue shortly, and give you feedback,
Cheers!
thanks yet again - haven't followed through with the project I had outlined in my previous post. On a related issue I was hunting for options to develop a media server for my off-grid parents, and here I am again (!) The "project" I have in mind for them is to revamp their Dell Inspiron 1525 - currently with unprotected Vista - into Puppy Linux. Have assisted with upgrading their sludge-bunny with recycled components and they are so impressed they are thinking of finally making the jump from Windows entirely. I won't be able to progress on it until the new year unfortunately, and I'm still a total noob with home networked servers such as this, but feedback will happen in due course
