I have HP/Compaq nc6220 running 2.14 on USB stick. I loaded the supplied ipw2200 and got error: "Loading ipw2200 failed; try a different driver." Tried ipw2100 & 3945 just for the heck of it, and got the same error mesg.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Apparently the Compaq nc6220 has a Wireless On/Off button.
It might be that simple.

If not, run "lspci" to try to identify the pci id of your wifi device.

Unfortunately, the power button only works under Windows. I've looked in the bios setting, and I did not find way to turn it on from outside Windows.

I tried "lspci", and I cannot see any wifi device. Attached is the lspci output from the console. Maybe it is there and I am not seeing it.

Well your wifi device is listed:
"8086:4223 (rev 05)" = Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG
And that's a valid pci id for the ipw2200 driver.

I was about to suggest you check a few things in bios, then I came across this post -

While you're in bios, check if there is an option for "PnP OS = YES/NO".
Set it for "NO" and many hardware problems may then go away.

Unfortunately, there is no "PnP OS" option for the machine, and reset did not work. I have had other hardware problem with this machine recently, but oddly the wifi works whenever I boot Windows on it.

I found this here on the puppy forum....can't remember where.

This might apply or not but at least should be innocuous and worth trying.
I had similar problems with my laptop equipped with bcm43xx and ubuntu, and in order to have wi-fi connection standing I had to boot with the following boot parameters (which here I report adapted to puppy linux):

I am using USB flash drive, so I edited syslinux.cfg based on a posting elsewhere in the forum http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/search ... 6&start=15

I added the additional instructions:

default vmlinuz root=/dev/ram0 initrd=initrd.gz PMEDIA=usbflash acpi=strict acpi=noirq pci=biosirq pci=nosort irqpoll routeirq

I rebooted and I still cannot turn the wifi on the machiine. I loaded ipw2200, and still get the same err msg.

Puppy Linux is great! I was able to get my Linksys WPC54GX working by using ndiswrapper and the driver/inf files off of the original CD--for some reason, the driver download from the Linksys site didn't work for me.

This is all wonderful information, though has grown to a point of needing some compilation in the interest of being even more valuable than it already is. I have no experience in setting such up, but here's what I'm envisioning, should some benevolent soul desire to build such a thing:

A chart with wifi card manufacturer/model/chipset in the left-hand column - in alpha-numeric order, top to bottom; Puppy version numbers across the top row; and both driver number and either "Linux" or "ndis" in the appropriate crosshatch boxes.

Linux/ndis could be omitted were an appropriate two-color scheme and key applied to the driver number.

Any takers?

Netgear WG511 v2 (made in China) also works fine, using ndiswrapper and the W2K drivers. From memory, the v2 (made in China) uses a Marvell chipset. (The Netgear cards are often available as a bundle with some Netgear routers, for little more than the cost of the router alone.)

Also working via ndiswrapper is the wireless LAN side of my Sony-Ericsson GC79 GPRS/WLAN card (Broadcom chipset). Apparently it's also possible to get the GPRS side working under Linux, but I haven't attempted that yet.

Using WPA1 with both of the above.

After spending up to 3 days on some other mini-distros trying to get my home network connection running on my dell inspiron 6400, i was getting depressed.

Puppy had the inbuilt wireless (intell PRO/Wireless 3954ABG) going in all of 5 minutes. Now that is user-friendliness right there.

I was trying to get a D-Link 650 vP pcmcia card to work, but no luck yet. However I was letting my daughter use a Netopia 3D reach USB. On Puppy 2.14 and now 2.16 wizard usedthe rt2570 driver worked first time. The box is a toshiba satellite 1715. Using the live CD. This a new cheap one frm china.

The Zyxel ZD1201 chipset-based USB wireless "dongles" also work with puppy, however you have to download the firmware (just google it!) and put the firmware binaries in /lib/firmware.

tekram tm-802b card working in toshiba laptop using ndiswrapper and windows driver (net8180.inf). The linux r8180 driver did not work. The tekram card uses a realtek chipset.
puppy 215ce on this laptop.

The same setup works on my Itronix xc6260 laptop puppy109ce and 212.

after much swearing and praying i've finally manged to get wg111t wireless adapter to work in puppy 2.17. you have download the firmware from http://kbserver.netgear.com/release_notes/d102626.asp then you have to find the .inf file (can't remember which one though ) but i know it does work.

This USB NIC is so low-budget, there is no brand name ANYWHERE on it, the package, or in the documentation.......

USBview showed as ZyDAS USB 2 device.

Used Zyxel zd1211rw driver supplied kindly by puppy, and hey-presto, a working wireless. Gol-DANG!!!!!

I've used it in Puppy 2.14 and 2.16 so far.

Also, I suggest the original thread creator reorganize the devices into alphabetical order. A quick run with a spreadsheet program ought to sort things out.

D-Link DWL-122G rev B1 USB adapter works in 2.17.1.

This uses the Ralink RT2570 chipset & the driver in earlier Puppys would never load on my VIA EPIA 5000. Now it does.

But, the network connection wizard in 2.17.1 doesn't configure it properly. Instead, use the rutilt utility which does work.

I haven't yet figured out how to save the configuration from rutilt so it connect automatically on next boot.
