Hello all.

If you need a fast, competent and lightweight browser, links2 is it.

This latest version 2.10 compiled from source for Puppy with javascript and
full graphics (jpg, png, svg, tiff) enabled, following the author's instructions.

Heads up! Most Puppies have most of those libraries. Meaning: you may need
to install extra libraries in your Puppy to get the full benefit of this compilation. Leave
me a note here mentioning which lib you need. I had to install all of them for this
compilation, so it's a simple matter for me to share them through this thread.

links2 will also run in console mode. It's the ideal Internet app to define in your
/usr/local/bin/defaulthtmlviewer script. Granted, it's weirder to use (menu access
is by keyboard), but it's more of a browser, less of a pager, than dillo, IMO.

If how fast you gather information on the Internet matters to you, this is the one
you need, this is a Formula1 browser. It is extremely fast on Internet searches.

Compiled in pemasu's raringPup-3.9.9.2, it should work in all Puppies with a
glibc of 2.17 or newer.

Don't enjoy! ;)

links2 is really ugly with a repulsive picture in the background, isn't? :-)

Hi, jplt.

Indeed, a lightweight browser is a necessity these days, eh?

I may be wrong, but I think that your libtiff-4.3.something is not "strong" enough,
even if you link it as libtiff.so.5.

So... try the attached? It's a copy of what I have on this upupRaring-3.9.9.2.
Beforehand, make a copy of all libtiff files you have in /usr/lib, then unpack the
attached in /usr/lib.

Let me know? Thanks in advance.

Bye for now.

Your zip work good in tahrpup.

But in precise another problem :

Code: Select all

links2: error while loading shared libraries: libevent-2.0.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
In tahrpup this page crash my system ! (very long page) (dillo support this page) !

Sorry about that. If I have the time, I may come up with a precise-specific version.

Generally speaking it is always best to compile in the Puppy you will be using to run the program. With different Pups you usually stand a better chance compiling in an older and running in a newer rather than the other way round. I compiled links 2.10 in Dpup Wheezy just against the existing libs (including glibc 2.13 of course). Seems to run OK but as you say Musher0 it takes a bit of getting used to. Posting this from it now, wonder if it will work including the attachment?

Thanks for the reminder, Oscar.

@jplt: PuppyPrecise-what?
(I mean: which version of Precise do you need the links2 for? There's a good dozen
of Precise's !)

I survived another deadline (hehe), so I'll have some free time on my hands this
week-end. Give me your version # and I'll try to compile links2 for your Precise.
(And before the question pops up in your head, no, I'm not a cat, haha. I don't know
which animal I am but I'm way past nine lives!!! ) :D

Also, < links2 -g > had no problem showing your page in the upupRaring I compiled it in.
(Please see attached proof!)

In the console links2, I had no problem either viewing your page, except this console
variant of links2 does not show pictures.

Bye for now.

Bonjour,
Thank you musher for this thread i discovered by chance!
As links is the "basic" default browser of ToOpPY, I am interested in testing Links2 may be to get something less... basic!

Code: Select all

links2: error while loading shared libraries: libevent-2.0.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
This could be solved easily while installaling libevent libs using the PPM.
Now the problem is that Links2 complains about this missing lib:

Code: Select all

/links: error while loading shared libraries: libjbig.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory.
I tried to install "libjbig2dec0-dev_0" from PPM but nothing changed. It seems that this lib is not part of the standard Precise libs but part of Trusty. I guess it could work though but at the expense of other programs. I already experimented this. One problem is solved whereas others appear: It is indeed a very vicious circle!

Cordialement.

To those of you using Argolance's new ToOpPy 2.0 FINAL, he's got Links-2 in there as the
basic browser. Didn't check the version, but it works great.

Good evening, all. / Bonsoir à toutes et à tous.

Sorry for the delay. / Désolé pour le retard.

For jplt and others using one of the Puppy Precise series: (Link valid for 30 days only.)

Compiled and tested in PuppyPrecise-5.4.3, so should work in that pup
and other PPrecise's with higher version numbers than that one.

Enjoy! / À la bonne vôtre !

Hello, all.

A new links2, version 2.11, was released Aug. 30, 2015 (two days ago).
An already compiled "alt linux" package is avaiblable here.
Those guys are really quick... :)

Note:
Partial test: some libs missing in upupRaring. Maybe stick with v. 10 for now.

Hello, all.

Development of links is pretty quick these days, isn't ?! :)

Links2, version 2.12, was published Sept. 20th, four days ago. Here's a
compilation I made of it on Puppy Precise 5.4.3. I have added the scripts
and *.desktop files from the 2.10 pet above.

Works fine on PPrecise-5.4.3 on this 32-bit machine; should work just as
well on later Puppies. Keep us posted?

The pet archive for links2-2.12 is available from:

Enjoy!

Links is a very fast and handy browser!
I compiled 2.12 with uclibc and linked static so this build [3.7Mb] should work on most Puppy versions (no additional libraries needed).
Updated 20150930: Replaced tar.gz with pet-package - added lzma as compression method.

As well, goingnuts, you may want to change the name of your archive.
Downloading it, I nearly squished the original source, which has the same name.
