Gramps for .ged files

#2 Post by davids45 »

G'day SolusUmbra,

There are several Gramps threads in the Educational section of the Advanced Software of the Advanced Topics of the Puppy Forum:

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=39490

Searching the Puppy Forum for gramps should bring up more threads.

From my limited experience with Gramps, it seems SlackoPups won't run Gramps at all, but Ubuntu-based Pups (e.g. Tahrs. Xenials) will if you have the right Python version.

I find Gramps is very slow to load as my family data base has many people in it.
In Puppy, I run Legacy genealogy software (version 7.5) under Wine (2.0 stable) which is not quite as quick in Puppy as it is in Windows, but is still better for me than Gramps.

I have not tried any basic ged editors (written for Windows) under Wine in Puppy but suspect they would be fine as a ged file is essentially a text file.
As such, they are editable in a spreadsheet program, and maybe also in Puppy's text editors, but I'd fear losing a critical format command so the edited file was no longer openable or correctly displayed in a genealogy program.
