Daughter has a corrupt hard drive on a windows 7 laptop. I can boot puppy from a DVD/rw, and can see all the pictures she wants me to retrieve, but I have no idea how to get them on another DVD, or a USB thumb drive (probably the better option). I've tried dragging to the USB link on the desktop, but that didn't seem to work. I don't see a way to copy and paste. How do you pull pictures and documents off the old hard drive?
Thanks for any help. Joe
Pulling pictures from corrupt drive
When you drag and drop a menu should pop up with options.
MAKE SURE YOU SELECT COPY.
If something does not transfer. You still have it in original form.
Yes, you can drag folders from one location to another.
Even multiple folders.
However, you say it is a corrupted drive.
Get better error info if you do drag and drop in small amounts.
You could drag and drop a folder with a lot of stuff in it and get a long list of files that did not copy.

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Hi Joebar,
Agree with bigpup. I'd open each folder (sub-folder or sub-sub folder, etc. when you have them) and work with a small number of files at a time. Just wanted to make certain you know a couple of "tricks" to using rox.
1. To select all the files in a directory, Left-click on an empty space within that directory (in order to focus rox on it) then hold-down the Ctrl-Key while typing "a". All the files (and folders) in that directory will be selected. To deselect any, hold down the Ctrl-Key and left-click the file you don't want. You can then Left-Press and hold, then drag any one of the selected files into your destination directory and select copy. The rest of the selected files will be dragged along and copied as well.
2. You can also "lasso" several files. Place your mouse-cursor on an empty space. Then Left-Press and drag it over the files you want to select. To select additional files, release the button, then hold down the Ctrl-Key and Left-Click on each file you also want to select. Deselect as noted in "1".
3. On the far right of rox's tool bar is a number indicating how many files (and folders) are within the opened window. It will also show you if there are any hidden files or folders. To view a hidden folder, Left-Click rox's EYE. The number of files in your original and destination folder should match.
4. When having to copy many files from one folder to another, I find it helpful to open the two windows, one above the other, and both having the same dimensions or at least width. By comparing the beginning and ending files in each row, I can see if I've missed something.

It sounds like the above techniques are fine for the drive in question. If the drive is really fu7k3D then one can give safecopy a try:
http://safecopy.sourceforge.net/
Code: Select all
Safecopy 1.7 by CorvusCorax
Usage: safecopy [options] <source> <target>
Options:
--stage1 : Preset to rescue most of the data fast,
using no retries and avoiding bad areas.
Presets: -f 10% -r 10% -R 1 -Z 0 -L 2 -M BaDbLoCk
-o stage1.badblocks
--stage2 : Preset to rescue more data, using no retries
but searching for exact ends of bad areas.
Presets: -f 128* -r 1* -R 1 -Z 0 -L 2
-I stage1.badblocks
-o stage2.badblocks
--stage3 : Preset to rescue everything that can be rescued
using maximum retries, head realignment tricks
and low level access.
Presets: -f 1* -r 1* -R 4 -Z 1 -L 2
-I stage2.badblocks
-o stage3.badblocks
