Booting Lucid 5.286

#1 Post by I-Dont-Know »

Hello,

This question has probably been answered somewhere here.
Finding it for me is difficult to pinpoint.

So, here goes.

I boot Lucid 5.286 from a USB flash stick.

I recently added a 2nd hard drive, formatted it ext2 and copied one of my LupuSave files to it.

Then after rebooting the pc, when Lucid searches for hard disks, partitions and folders, it does not return to me my new hard drive.

It finds, SDA1, SDB3, SDB5 which are drives and partitions I've been using right along since I originally installed Lucid 5.286.

Now that I have recently installed my new 2TB hard drive, when I reboot Lucid, in the search list my new hard drive SDC1 is not in the list.

I don't know how to make this edit to my system. Lucid 5.286
If there is a file I have to edit, I don't know where or how to find it.

I do not see a menu item where I can make this edit.

Can someone here help me with making this edit ?

Many thanks,
Mike from Massachusetts.

It's an internal SATA 2 TB Hard Drive.
I used Puppy Linux GParted to set up the drive and format it.

I originally formatted it NTFS.
Then FAT32
Upon reboot, not seeing the drive in any of the Lupu search list, then I reformatted to ext2 thinking it might be a PuppyLinux quirk. I'd rather it be FAT32 or NTFS.

I just need to learn how to get the new drive to appear in the search for Puppy SaveFiles. And need some help doing this.

There are no more details to offer here.
It's a straight foward hard drive install.

I think you may have to ask it to find new hardware.

Is this an internal or external hard drive?
Exactly how did you do this formatting?
Specific details????
What program used?
How many partitions?
Did you change the partition table?

Only way to know if you did the formatting correctly.

Ext2 is not a good format to use on a hard drive.
That format is very easily corrupted and gets errors.
ext 3 is much better for hard drives.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

I-Dont-Know,

As bigpup hints, your hard drive may not have been properly formatted. What program did you use to format it?

If Linux doesn't find a valid filesystem, Puppy doesn't show the drive on your desktop.

Use GParted to create a new partition table for the new SATA ( under the "Device" menu) and choose MSDOS as the type.

Then create a new ext3 partition on it and format. As noted above, for a SATA drive you probably don't want ext2.

Then reboot and see what it does ..

Work Around

#6 Post by I-Dont-Know »

I needed to move on with my project so I implemented a work around.

After installing the new big 2TB Sata Drive I wanted to boot from it. That is, be able to store my SaveFiles on it and boot Puppy from it.

But since the new Sata drive did not show up in the "Search List" at boot up, I just chose to leave well enough alone. I then moved all my data off the main HD partitions / SDB3 and SDB5 onto my new 2TB SDC1 HD.

Had SDC1 been able to be in the search list, I wanted to return to the main HD, I'd been using and repartition it from 2 partitions to one and then use it to store my many different PuppySave files and some file limited file storage.

I like to experiment with different versions of PuppyLinux on USB boot sticks. Lucid, Tahr, Slacko etc... just to see what they are like and to take them mobile with me on my travels with my laptop. So this pc of mine I'm using is my test bed for creating puppy boot sticks. I did not want to risk messing it up since I have no less than 20 different SaveFiles I did not want to lose.

Friends of mine who have FooBar'd computers, I show them they can bring their pc's back to life booting Puppy off a stick. They are amazed and grateful they don't have to spend needless money on yet another Windoze PC.

Anyway, thank you for your replies.
