Hi Lassar,

Keep in mind that my approach to Linux is more like a 6 year old playing with blocks than an expert in Linux systems and programming.

/usr/bin/crontab is only a symbolic link to /bin/busybox. So, the following may explain how busybox AKA crontab gets its settings, https://busybox.net/FAQ.html#getting_started. That may not be an answer to the question you asked; but may be the information you need.
