foomatic drivers found

#16 Post by 8Geee »

I found a copy (stored in SSD) of the foomatic files rcrsn51 made a few years back.

Sorry for double link, but some people may need a heads-up. This link goes to the actual upload post, but the first post in the thread should be consulted if any questions.

Foomatic D/L Post

Also found in forum is the post to upgrade Slacko-based pups OpenSSL from 1.0.1 to 1.0.2g. There are a few caveats here AFTER the pet install... mainly that one must go to Slackware.com --> security advisories --> 2018 and D/L the latest OpenSSL patch (1.0.2o). The version is Slackware 14.2, and the solibs are done first as a pet, then the OpenSSL as pet.

The 1.0.2g upgrade link is HERE

Most netbooks were Intel Atom. No Meltdown or Spectre problems, and no hidden "policeman" on the CPU chip (Intel Management Engine, and other names).

The two items in the post right above yours is all they need.

On the Other Hand, I have made the EONS spin for a few years. It has everything you listed, EXCEPT the kernel is 3.4.82. You may remove the office if you don't want it. As far as I know acpi works in that one, but Lenovo may disagree, just as it did with this version.

i've spent a lot of time to setup slacko5.7.0 (pae though i have only 1G ram - don't remember why i chose this...) the way i wanted.

if it's only about openSSL, i think i can keep my slacko5.7.0 and install the update.

thx for advise

HerrBert is correct, on the r6089 release acpi does not load, and is not assigned a pid.

It appears that in this version, the network is still being configured during the attempt. That process must finish, and according to Slacko5.7 original, acpid loaded, then CUPS.

A few things look out of order in bootsys.init in comparison between original Slacko5.7 and this 5.7.1 version.

The error generates on line 223 in my eeePC (Intel Atom n270), but should be considered as nearby for other CPU's.

R6127 also working here on eeePC900a.
A look behind the scene of acpi is that it does load and does not b'cast its pid.

I removed FF28 and loaded FF27-configured as a test, and all is well. Video drivers not needed were also removed... just i915 and i965 remain. Adrive removed. Runs well so far as frugal Pupmode-13. (Gdmap = 465Mb, Gpart =420 of 768Mb)

I also note the new Atheros drivers that were patched in kernel (memory leaks). I will have to test the wifi (ath5k patched) ... eth0 (atl_1e) OK.

patched Ath5k driver working.
MESSAGES reports ASPC not working... OS does not support.
Trivial. Besides thats where the leak is.
I wasn't aware of that situation.

ION: D/L'd the foomatic driver pet by rcrsn51 (see previous posts). Loaded OK... things went where they are expected to go.

I will test this soon. I have a backup plan at hand if problems. In short, transferring etc files for a known good install.

============================================================

*** One little glitch here... the eeePC hot_key file not present in this spin. In checking out the wifi, I discovered that the "blue light" does not toggle on/off. A search using pfind did not find any files with 'eeepc'. Other tests indicate the wifi is on or off... but with light always on, well, its a bit disconcerting.

file names from k3.4.82 original slacko5.7

/lib/modules/3.4.82/kernel/drivers/platform/x86/eeepc-laptop.ko

/lib/modules/3.4.82/kernel/drivers/platform/x86/eeepc-wmi.ko

There are other files/directories located in /sys/bus/*
I don't know if these are taken/copied from the .ko files above. ***

Thanks for the info 8Geee. From what I can tell, the last "kernel config" with eeepc-laptop and eeepc-wmi was 3.14 so I reuploaded an iso built with 3.14 to older folder for testing... would be curious if this one works for your blue light or not.

I tried the k3.14.79 last night, late, the blue light remained on. Not sure what this bug is. Boot manager indicated the 'eeepc_laptop' module was loaded, because I could not add it.

'eeepc_wmi' was not loaded, but would not install because there was no object found. This is also true on k3.4.82 (original).

Don't worry too much about this bug, if the actual.ko iss faulty. The other 99% with non-Atom processors need the k3.18.x more than I need a light on/off.

r6157 fixes certain bugs

#28 Post by 8Geee »

Good news on the r6157 version (k3.18.108)

1.) Puppy Universal Install now works 'properly' as in the original slacko5.7 No jumping thru hoops. syslinux reports as version 4.03. During boot up there were funny characters in the name, that has gone. Maybe it was a 'special' version?

2.) Wifi light now toggles on/off other FN+f2. Screen bright/dim always worked (FN+f3 or 4).

Noted that I was using the default puppypc(abcde) numeric login. I had been changing this at first boot... that might be a no-no.

Regardds and thanks

Elsewhere in the forum, there is a new version of Pup-Sys Info (PSI). This 2.8 version checks for meltdown/spectre using the Tab "Mainboard" --> CPU.

This one usually boots up at between 40-60Mb
Open a browser, and it will jump to 250Mb.
Certain office packages also add quite a bit.

k3.18.110 working well here. eeePC900a (Atom n270) has no KB issues, still have not tried printer.

*** Noted SSBD issues mitigation in this kernel.***

As a side-note: check browser caches, and set to the same amount as the Level-2 (L2) on-CPU cache. Setting some of these to zero WILL bork FireFox. I will be testing L1 size shortly. The amounts are in Kb, so values of 512, 1024, or 2048, etc. /side

Some additional Meltdown/Spectre included

***Ext2 mem leak patched ***

ALSA: control: fix a redundant-copy issue
several usbip "racing" fixes
several tcp/ipv4 patches

Edit: I made some adjustments in the post below for slacko-5.7.1, having two versions, one for just the stock-gtk2, and one for using gtk+3.

If anyone using Slacko 5.7.1 is interested in getting "easytag-2.2.6" look here:

I'm glad to have found this for my older PC and laptop, both IBM/Lenovo, and a later Dell laptop, all of which liked the original Slacko 5.7 . The PC had Slacko 5.7 32 and ran well, but the FF didn't work well on current sites. I intend HD installs of this latest Slacko to see if those machines can have an extended life.

Is this the current thread for Slacko 5.7.1_r6231 questions?

Thanks so much to Sailor for this distro and to all who posted links for pets, etc.

As an update: Just burned a CD and did a full install in an ext2 partition on a 16G flash drive, am posting from it now. Excellent repository selections in PPM, FF runs very fast, and I'll experiment with packages on this install for now.

One odd thing, though: when I used the CD for the first time, and saved the session to the CD, then went to shut down, it asked for a password to exit the session, in a text dialog. I had to force a shut down with the power button.

Great job, Sailor.
