This is what I see in the client logbook (router menu):

Code: Select all

[...]
ip=192.168.2.106   mac=00-80-88-03-0E-3B   name=puppypc18902
[...]
hmmm... Puppy is known to the router, but the SSID is not known to Puppy (when I boot from USB).

@ mikeslr
Carolina with xfce needs
a bit more ram and cpu than the standard ROX/Jwm puppy - probably at least 512MB of ram and 1GHz CPU for decent performance.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 241#656241
That's too much!

Unicorn 6.0

Booting from USB:
- both the mouse and the trackpoint stick are not working, either after mouse/keyboard setup.
- SNS detects no interface, neither eth0 nor wlan0.

HD install: I spare myself

I also have ongoing mouse problems (non-wireless). For me, it's in RU Xerus (quirky) and usually happens when I am push the computer's resources ....

such as when I'm using WoofQ to build.....

Sometimes, plugging into a new port works, sometimes it doesn't. I use a 4 port USB extension, which may be part of the issue. Still, I think there's something deeper going on here; Woof code or maybe a generic driver that's older than the hills.

I'm going to try to dig into this deeper in RU Xerus. We'll see...

Hi Rimatheou, were you relatively happy with the mouse performance of the last Lupu you tried?

If I read your results correctly Lupu seemed ok except not good at detecting wireless networks. I think it would be good to look at the wifi problems more closely using Lupu.

Bigpup suggested some Network Wizard troubleshooting steps here and that would be one of the possible ways for us to collect information.

There are also other tools that will let us work out what puppy sees when it looks for your wifi. Is it worth focussing on Lupu now or do you still want recommendations for other puppies to try? (the larger swap partition should open up the opportunity to try some other puppies if you want).

Hi Greengeek, I decided to use lupu 528. Mouse perfomance is good. Now I go through the steps Bigpup wrote. After step 3 (Select Wireless in the Configure wireless network box) I get this message:

Code: Select all

Note: The interface you have slected uses the prism2_usb module, which is not included in our list of modules supporting WPA encryption.

However, if you know for a fact that it does support WPA, or wish to test if it does [...], click the 'Add To list' button. This will add the module to a configuration file for future use.
I clicked on 'Add to List'. Then prism2_usb was added to the configuration file /etc/network-wizard/wpa_modules and the wpa supplicant driver wext was also added.
I continued with step 4 (Scan...) => no wireless networks were found.
Switching encryption to WEP in the router menu => no networks were detected.
Switching to no encryption => no networks were detected.

I wonder if the module being loaded by Lupu is faulty.

Your post here http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 251#979251 shows that Slacko 5.6 identified your wlan hardware as a usb device with id of 04f1:3009 which is made by the Victor Company of Japan, Ltd and is known as a MP-XP7250 WLAN Adapter. (also see P2 of the pdf I link below)

Your post above says that the driver module (prism2_usb) being loaded for that adapter does not have WPA capability.

This pdf: http://www.iwaniwanowitsch.net/Home/Inf ... %20usb.pdf has more info and says the same thing - that the prism2_usb driver lacks WPA support. This implies that your wifi network is wpa and that is why it is not beeing seen.

That pdf suggests that there may be other ways to blacklist prism2_usb and use a different driver module. I have never used blacklisting so i can't help you achieve that. The next question is what alternative module might support WPA on that hardware?

I do have a suggestion - could you boot Slacko again and enter the command:

lsmod

so that we can confirm what module Slacko was loading to that card.

(maybe post the Lupu output of lsmod also?)

Thanks - I was hoping to be able to spot which driver module Slacko is using for your wifi but it is not jumping out at me. Could you post the output of the following command when running Slacko?

readlink /sys/class/net/wlan0/device/driver

I continued with step 4 (Scan...) => no wireless networks were found.
As I understand.
This step only searches for wireless signals in the area.
If the wifi adapter is working. It should find them if there are any.
Encryption (wpa, wep, etc...) comes into play when actually trying to setup a connection with one of the signals.
Probably need a better driver.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected

@rimatheou: When you originally did the hard drive install, did you also copy the zdrv.sfs file? Newer Puppies have it - older ones don't.

It contains driver files that may be needed to make your mouse work.

When booting slacko6.3.2 from USB, X failed to start after configuration of xorgwizard.
Choosing vesa, the system hangs up,
choosing modesetting and Nothing - Let Xorg guess it:

Code: Select all

Fatal server error: no screens found(EE)
I also removed the zdrv-sfs-file and booted live, but I had the same result of X.

The same procedure with Slacko6.3.0.
I made the live-usb-drive your way described here http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=54566
I think I had no problems with X when I transfered the .iso completely to the usb drive with dd.
When I boot tahr6.0.6 from usb I don't have any window manager. I only see the task menu bar.
Unicorn6.0 is working fine from USB.
But booting from HD and having it installed with the zdrv-file, the mouse is NOT working. It's also not possible to make a setup.
Slacko5.7 doesn't have any zdrv-file.

Hi Rimatheou, all of the information I can find states that your inbuilt wifi adapter does not have a Linux driver that is capable of supporting WPA.

That wifi interface has a windows driver that supports WPA - but not a suitable Linux driver. (the non-usb versions of that adapter do have Linux drivers that seem to support WPA to some extent but this does not help you).

I think your choices are as follows:
- Change your routers security protocol to WEP or open (bad idea)
- Fit a new wifi adapter (either usb or pcmcia) that supports WPA
- Try loading the windows driver to your current inbuilt adapter. I think this is what people call "ndiswrapper" method. Sorry I do not know how to do this. Hopefully someone else will have some idea if/how it is possible for you.

I don't know if it helps, but booting Lubuntu 17.10 I get this message:

Both of those error messages look like failed attempts to get the wifi interface to establish WPA capability. The firmware has to be WPA compatible and the driver module has to be WPA compatible too.

It looks as if neither Bodhi nor Lubuntu could find the magic spot to initialise WPA abilities.

Whatever the Windows guys did to establish WPA in this wifi device (and you said it works fine on XP) - the Linux guys could not achieve it and as far as I can see looking at lots of websites the Linux developers just gave up on trying to make it work.

This is sad because the non-usb versions of the prism2 interface work fine under Linux. But you are stuck with the usb version.

Probably the only way this might be able to work is if you can force Puppy to use ndiswrapper to load the Windows driver.

But who can help with info for using ndiswrapper??

I will post any links I can find. Here is one interesting one from tempestuous:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 774#145774

Here is a quote from the wikka:http://puppylinux.org/wikka/HowToWifiFromCommand
...Puppy's Network Wizard is one of the best in the business. It supports all currently available Linux wifi drivers including the unconventional linux-wlan-ng (prism2) drivers, plus ndiswrapper. ....For wifi chipsets not supported by a native Linux driver, Puppy also includes ndiswrapper, which will "wrap" a Windows driver. Obviously, you must supply the Windows driver files.

ndiswrapper is a workaround solution, but sometimes it's the ONLY solution.
Also - this page looks very helpful: http://www.puppylinuxforum.org/thread-596.html

(It is probably going to be necessary to manually unload any other prism2usb module that tries to load itself to your wifi interface during boot. Or else blacklist it (I think you can only blacklist after creating a savefile but I really don't know for sure)
.

Maybe this is the solution: https://delysid.org/jvcmp-xp7250de.html
The built-in wireless LAN card of the xp7250 is connected internally via USB, and it is a Prism2.5 chipset based adaptor. This card is currently only supported by the Linux-wlan-ng Project, and not by the standard kernel yet. You need to download one of the latest development snapshots (I use 0.2.1pre20), and build/install it. The latest version of linux-wlan-ng in Debian does currently not yet support this USB card variant, so you will need to compile from sources.
Edit:

I successfully installed linux-wlan-ng_0.2.9+dfsg-4_i386.deb (https://ubuntu.pkgs.org/12.04/ubuntu-un ... 6.deb.html). We will see...
