Dpup Stretch 7.5 RC-2
Would it be a good idea to upgrade the D-Bus package?

It appears the libdbus is the official Debian package (version 1.10.16)
But the executables including dbus-daemon are the much older 1.2.4.2pemissive from a .pet package.

Compiling VLC for example, the configure script complains about the old version and disables D-Bus in the build.

I am no expert in these matters, but one option seems to be to use the 2 packages "dbus" and "dbus-x11" from Debian in place of the .pet. In this case the dbus-daemon executable also needs libapparmor as a dependency.

The package libdbus-1-dev also needs to be added to the devx

In my personal Stretch remaster I have also been testing a build from source of D-Bus 1.12.6 with a couple of configure options including --disable-systemd and that seems to be working fine without the extra dependency lib.

My VLC 3.0.1 package contains the needed Qt5 libaries
These are official Debian Stretch versions and are in /usr/lib
Debian do sometimes update their packages.

If you have other programs installed which have different versions of the Qt5 libraries this may cause a conflict so you will need to check this and take steps to only have one suitable version of each library.

Dpup fails to boot from a subdirectory on my USB stick (device sdb1).
I have multiple pups on my stick, all in their dedicated directory.
Directory structure looks like this:
  • /mnt/sdb1/grldr
    /mnt/sdb1/menu.lst

    /mnt/sdb1/pup_slacko/initrd.gz
    /mnt/sdb1/pup_slacko/puppy_slacko_5.6.sfs
    /mnt/sdb1/pup_slacko/vmlinuz

    /mnt/sdb1/pup_tahr/vmlinuz
    /mnt/sdb1/pup_tahr/initrd.gz
    /mnt/sdb1/pup_tahr/puppy_tahr_6.0.5.sfs
    /mnt/sdb1/pup_tahr/zdrv_tahr_6.0.5.sfs

    /mnt/sdb1/pup_dpup/adrv_stretch_7.5.sfs
    /mnt/sdb1/pup_dpup/initrd.gz
    /mnt/sdb1/pup_dpup/vmlinuz
    /mnt/sdb1/pup_dpup/zdrv_stretch_7.5.sfs
    /mnt/sdb1/pup_dpup/puppy_stretch_7.5.sfs
Using grub4dos entries in menu.lst look like this. Except for Dpup other Puppies, even very old ones, would boot without problems:
  • title Puppy Slacko 5.6
    kernel /pup_slacko/vmlinuz pmedia=usbflash pfix=ram
    initrd /pup_slacko/initrd.gz

    title Puppy Tahr 6
    kernel /pup_tahr/vmlinuz pmedia=usbflash pfix=ram
    initrd /pup_tahr/initrd.gz

title Puppy Dpup Stretch 7.5 CE (RC-2)
    kernel /pup_dpup/vmlinuz pmedia=usbflash pfix=ram
    initrd /pup_dpup/initrd.gz
Dpup tells me that it fails to locate the main sfs on sda1 (!).
Why can't Dpup find the file on the boot device like other puppies and how can I fix it?

Occasionally, the wireless network loses its connection.

Has been encountered many times.

Wireless Icon is normal, but you can't ping anything.

(see picture)

have to do
Wirelss Icon --> right click --> Setup networking --> Restart Networks
and then working again.

Wireless, DE-actiivate ethernet because two interfaces are active in Frisbee, and they will fight together. Do It manually.
When Ethernet is available that is my Choice and i Don't use Frisbee.

versions but quite the same, available in All'ys archive

#279 Post by hamoudoudou »

You can trust Puppies Stretch much better than Xenial.. They are several versions but quite the same, available in All'ys archive. Which one to choose ?

An idea : nowadays most puppies are build on the fly ? What do i mean ? Builder is like a bee.. he likes to install new stuff. But not to support users..
When you find one who cares of feedback, keep on working with his stretch

Maybe try adding the psubdir kernel parameter:-

title Puppy Dpup Stretch 7.5 CE (RC-2)
kernel /pup_dpup/vmlinuz pmedia=usbflash pfix=ram psubdir=/pup_dpup
initrd /pup_dpup/initrd.gz

I have not tried this in USB but I always use it with my subdir frugals in HDD
No guarantee that it will work, but perhaps the requirement for it has become stricter in this Puppy.

In early tests I also found WiFi internet connection to have problems.
My solution was to install and use PeasyWiFi 4.5
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=94501
This has worked perfectly for me.
It uses udhcpc (busybox) rather than dhcpcd (which the other networking tools use).

Note for Stretch Pup development:-
If there are other reports of WiFi issues it might be an idea to keep an eye on dhcpcd
I recall there was a .pet version of this with a "dropwait" feature which was being used in Puppy some time ago. Otherwise perhaps an upgrade or a recompile or some other tweak.

There are lots of variables in networking, especially WiFi, including all the different hardware.
In my early tests I found WiFi to be problematic. The connection would not survive a reboot.
Problems don't appear to be widespread, but there have been one or two other reports in these threads.

What I did was install PeasyWiFi and this has been perfect for me ever since.
Since this uses udhcpc in place of dhcpcd, it does point the finger of suspicion at dhcpcd although of course we should not jump to conclusions.

Stretch Pup has dhcpcd 6.10.1 from Debian.
As a test I compiled dhcpcd 7.0.3 from source using configure options to stay true to the (unorthodox) Debian directory structure.

--prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var --sbindir=/sbin --libexecdir=/lib/dhcpcd

I am not suggesting this as a general change for everyone, but for anyone who is encountering problems this is just one of many things you can try in your efforts to troubleshoot.

I did briefly test it myself using my USB WiFi adapter which previously gave problems. It worked using SNS including surviving reboot.
Strictly for testing - take precautions accordingly.

Why Dpup Stretch still release candidate ..

#288 Post by hamoudoudou »

Why Dpup Stretch still release candidate ... they are so few bugs
Final release would be fine, and be official version For Puppy Linux..
IMO stretch is far as good as unbuntu flavoured Puppies, missing FFmepg and libav always bad version..
(Artfulpup is perfect too, i was speaking of Xenialpup)
Derivatives are not RC (Pupjibaro and hungarian Puppy)

a swap team to not get fool.

#289 Post by hamoudoudou »

36 developers were working on Puppy strech before Debian released final and official version.. Now nobody to get a final Puppy stretch.. Radky is alone on the project.. It's now that he needs a team for LTS support.. IS it true that one person hs to be alone on a project ? sooner or later, this person needs to relax, a swap team to not get fool, Radky being as a processor, pouring tasks to his 35 assistants.
Some left to create a competing project , in a brand new forum, with Xenialpup and Puduan as Puppies to support.. I prefer Dpup Stretch, that is a fact. And i would lie to show it on Puppy Linux Facebook where DDog Stretch cannot stay the only version available for the whole world

I tried Radky's version a lovely pup indeed and nearly ready for release and I'm sure when it is ready it will be released so I don't think that stops anyone enjoying using it and it being a daily driver.
