Hi musher0, then the problem you have is different from mine.
Without the trick booting time for me is around 100 sec, (re)starting X is veeery slow also (and X crashing sometimes). All is normal for me if I boot with the video=... addition (boot time only 17 sec. then)

Hi pp4mnklinux,

I do not intend to issue an ISO of Brexit Pup as I consider the issued image format to be superior.

If you wish to establish whether your hardware will handle the later 64-bit k 4.9.15 kernel you are
welcome to a copy of the WoofCE produced ISO & devx which were used as a base for Brexit Pup.

Musher0 found that to be slow in the extreme on his older hardware and IMHO these later kernels
require a minimum of an i3 CPU or the AMD equivalent.
They can be found here:

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing

If that does not run well on your hardware neither will Brexit.

Actually a big part of the problems here seem to be your assumptions !
When I start Pale Moon for instance it immediately launches into a video broadcast which you don't realise is going on . So its madly downloading data behind the scenes that you may not even know about.

For anyone with a poor connection or limited download ability thats disasterous.
You have just assumed everyone is the same as you and they are not.

You need to turn off all these heavy downloads first

Then Palemoon is reasonable

Deadbeef comes up in 4 seconds for me with a 2core pentium chip
Abiword 4 secs
Geany 2 secs
Gnumeric 3 secs

Thats all with palemoon running in the background so I'm pretty happy with those.
I've had an issue with my MG2560 Cannon printer in that I need to get and position a .ppd file for it to print and even then it won't print the test pages in Precise 5.7.1 with the latest CUPS 2.5.5 but here it installed and worked so the ppd files must be fairly up to date

I like Pale moon now as I have also been able to install lastpass and adblock sucessfully

#35 Post by april »

I am having trouble with persistence.

This CBSN video insists on starting anyhow and how do I stop it?
The Lastpass and adblock addons that I carefully installed have gone on the next boot?Tried reinstalling and saving a couple of times just in case. No good

The bookmarks I installed were gone too?

That bloody warning alarm for no internet connection needs obliterating . As if we don't have enough noise pollution going on around us without you adding it here . How do I get it gone?

Hi april,

Thanks for continuing to test this Pup.
You need to have another look at item 8 of the main features in the original post in this thread
together with the the text copy of the startup-sound script in the download folder for further information.

The CBSN "video" you mention has nothing to do with Pale Moon and is in fact a very low bandwidth live network stream being played
in a borderless window by mpv. It's launch is intentional but if you launched something else before the few seconds it takes to
start it would appear on top of the other app.

The logic behind this is that most people's first action at boot up is to check the news. Hence the do nothing option will
result in that. To quit it you simply press q To toggle between windowed or full-screen mode press f

I accept that this automatic launch will not suit everyone in which case simply comment out line 30 in the
/root/noob/startup-sound script. The CBSN icon on wbar can be used to launch it at anytime.

You are obviously seeing and hearing a false internet connection alarm as on your hardware the test is being made too early.
To rectify that so that it only triggers when there is genuinely no connection, change the sleep period on line 18
from 13 (seconds) to 18 (seconds)- more if need be. A early (genuine) alarm can be very handy with wireless connections.

The app launch times on your 2core pentium chip are not good but that is really a consequence of these later 64-bit kernels.
IMHO you would get far better performance on your hardware with a 32-bit Pup such as peebee's new ArtfulPup which looks
set to restore people's faith in Puppy.

@ april

Please see previous post:
With regard to you persistence question there are 2 ways of saving.

1. During a session you can click on the desktop save icon at anytime.

2. At the end of a session you are offered a choice to save or not. If you decide to save you must
press enter save within 60 seconds or there will be no save or no further save since you last clicked on the desktop save icon.

If that is not working correctly can you please check that the contents of the 3rd partition on the stick
match the following. (You will probably not have the LibreOffice sfs but everthing else should be identical)

I added a file I want to use outside the savefile but it might not work there but essentially its all the same -see screenshot

When I look closer the savefile is not being changed even though it goes through all the motions . I created a directory OK so its not a permission problem?

Hi april,

Your most serious issue at present is the lack of persistence. Can you please test that as follows:

1. On wbar click on the download folder & then right click on an empty area within that and create a new directory named test_directory

2. Close the window & then click on the desktop "save" icon. (That should duplicate it within the save folder)

3. Navigate then to /mnt/home/xenialpup64save-etp/root/Downloads to check whether it has.

If it has not appeared there, it is possible that the correct OOTB save settings have been changed.
Please compare them with the correct OOTB settings in the shot below. (Your screenshots & permissions look fine)

Brexit Pup - Released 16th October 2017

For anyone following this thread I would stress that Brexit really requires a minimum of an i3 CPU or the AMD equivalent.

@ april,

With your 2core pentium chip I think that it would be a good idea to disable the Chrome silent_launch script in /root/Startup
It only impoves the very first launch speed of Chrome but other items should be quicker without it. You have also said
that you favour Pale Moon.

To do that:

1. Right click it then select properties & remove the 3 ticks in the exec column.

2. Click on close.

3. Click on the desktop save icon to preserve the change.

4. Use PSD on wbar to Reboot.
Can you tell me where I will find .sfs files for this and in particular I need a video editor please
I have created and uploaded a Avidemux pet to the optional pets & sfs folder. No idea how to use it
but it loads without errors and does play an MP4 video.
Sfs from other 64-bit Pups such as Tahr may work with Brexit.

Avidemux works well Thanks .
Would prefer an sfs though if you have the time.

It also seems to be mounting USB sticks as "Read Only" Do you know how to fix this?

Also I would like the USB stick to come up down the bottom like your screenshot when I plug it in . It does not atm (Sorted by choices in PMount config)

SAVEFILE
OK checked all on savefile above and its all OK . The Test directory is created and persists after boot.

However the xenialpup64save-etp file is not changed . It still has 24th Sept 2017 date?
Bookmarks imported to Palemoon and Add ons are not saved .

Funny though when I look inside that savefile with the Sept date it shows files changed ??

Now when I go in again to have a look some files have the latest time -2.21 pm but the savefile still has 7 am in the morning?

Look at the lib file below . Checked date and time and synced and all OK
So why is it showing 5pm?

Strangely after changing PMount config as mentioned above the Savefile is now working .
I'm guessing something was not right there and was setting the USB stick to read only or something like that

But looking inside at 2.20 pm 25/10/17 I see one file dated a day later - the 26th?

Hi april,

Brexit uses a "save folder" as opposed to a save file. The last modified date & time on such a folder
are fixed at the date of creation and do not change subsequently.

Pale Moon:

In Tools/Add-Ons/Extensions you will see that I installed the "Complete YouTube Saver 5.7.36.1" add-on.
It may be that this recent version of Pale Moon is turning it's nose up at an older add-on.
Bookmarks are best generally imported from a html file.
If you continue to experience problems with the above I would suggest that you check out their forum/faq.

Drive/Partition/stick Display:

Change in Applications/System/Puppy Event Manager - see shot below.

avidemux:

I did try to create an sfs but could not get it to work, hence the .pet

Surprised you dont have gMTP which downloads pictures from Android phones.https://github.com/panuhorsmalahti/gMTP

Also I'll need a devx.sfs . Is there one about that fits? Found at
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... 0lIZGVLME0
Also gmtp https://codeload.github.com/panuhorsmal ... zip/master
Also libmtp https://codeload.github.com/mmalecki/libmtp/zip/master
Also libusbhttps://nchc.dl.sourceforge.net/project ... 21.tar.bz2

Compiled and loads OK on here

@ april.

Call me old fashioned, but I do not actually possess a smartphone.
The menu entry "Applications/Filesystem/Connect Your Android Phone" may be what
you seek. It points at a script /usr/sbin/mtpdevice

There is a link to the devx in the reply to pp4mnklinux on the previous page.

Hi april,

I have seen your edit to your last but one post and you seem to have created a working alternative to
the non-working Android script included by the current WoofCE. Very well done. :)

I will take a look at that script to see whether I can fathom out what the issue is.
Have you yet had the chance to disable the Chrome silent_launch script as I suggested
on the previous page and if so with what results?

Brexit Pup - Released 16th October 2017

#50 Post by ETP »

Hi april,

I have now had a look at the script /usr/sbin/mtpdevice and concentrated first on getting notify-send working.
That requires additional items installing via PPM : (These only total a few MB)
  • libwnck-3-0_3.14.1-2|Window Navigator Construction Kit - runtime files
libwnck-3-common_3.14.1-2|Window Navigator Construction Kit - common files
notify-osd_0.9.35+16.04.20160415|daemon that displays passive pop-up notifications
libnotify-bin_0.7.6-2svn1|sends desktop notifications to a notification daemon Utilities
So ....... notify-osd plus its deps & libnotify-bin

(I have uploaded a couple of screenshots to a new "mtp Screenshot" folder" )

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing

Then launching from the menu item "Connect Your Android Phone", a message popped up "go-mtpfs is not installed"
That is generated by line 46 of the script which is a dependency check just prior to launching the GUI.

That plus it's deps totals 189 MB which brought me to a halt as even if I was happy to install that quantity
I could not test any further without an Android Phone.

This post therefore is a starting point for anyone who is motivated enough to press on.

It may be that simple e-mails or Google-Drive would suit some people for exchanging info between
PC & Smartphone depending on the quantity to be exchanged and whether the connection is metered or not.
