Continuing an old thread on Wine

I live in a constant state of despair. Maybe if Hillary had won...<grin>

I've clicked on winecfg, the little clock appears for a while, and it's supposed to create .wine directory? It's nowhere to be found. I've put off doing anything more about this. Why is this so tough? Puppy Tahr 6.0.5 is my lifeline. Works wonderfully. But Wine? Continued frustration.

It would be wonderful if someone could create a quick way of getting from no Wine to Wine. Even something easy enough for an old fart like myself to follow.

Are you running 32-bit or 64?
You might try loading it from a terminal and that may show you an error message

Tahrpup64 6.0.5 is a frugal or full install?

What specific version of Wine are you trying to download and install from the below forum topic?????

There are 64bit versions of Wine at below forum topic.
So try them.

If you try a 32bit Wine version.

To run in 64 bit Puppy you need to have the Puppy version
32bit compatibility libs sfs package loaded.

In the console type

sfsget

This should offer it and can download and install.
May have to run SFS-load-on-the-fly to load the sfs package.
once loaded type

Code: Select all

ldconfig

into a terminal/console and you're set to go.[/color]

Probably good idea to save and reboot.

Steps to install Wine:

For Wine.

Make sure you have the latest version of Wine.
Good place to get Wine for Puppy.

Also, look on the first post of the Wine topic for a added program that puts Wine entries in the menu.

When you get Wine installed and the Wine menu entries.
Run Wine config to setup Wine.
It will probably offer you a few more programs needed for Wine to run properly.
Should download and install them as part of the initial config.

Also, in Wine config->Drivers Select autodetect to get all the driver locations loaded in Wine.

A lot of settup options in Wine config, so check them all.

What version of Windows you want Wine to mimic can affect how a program runs. Wine Config->Applications.

About specific programs running in Wine.
Go to the Wine web site and see what it says about a specific program and issues.

Using Wine is almost like learning a new operating system.
Takes a while to learn how to use Wine and to get things working properly.
