Just for info:
Did you have to change the kernel to 4.1.x?

Tahr64 contains the firmware file iwlwifi-3160-7.ucode, so I'm guessing that it's compatible with his chipset.

I think I get it: your card is supported since kernel 3.10, Tahr is k3.14.
My card, 3165, is supported since kernel 4.1.

No, it reports the kernel as being "Linux 3.14.54 (x86_64)" in System Information. Also, I am posting on the operating system I just installed to the flash drive.

If I use that iwlwifi-3160-7.ucode firmware file on an older kernel version, like the one with Puppy 431, will it work with that kernel version and detect my chipset?

By the way this is my new/old account, so anything that the Tag300 account did is actually done by me.

As I understand it now, the answer is NO.

Well, I can't reinstall Puppy Linux 420 because my new computer doesn't start up that operating system. If I had drivers for that version I might have used it again because that was the first version of the OS, and first Puppy system I used.

Yes, I like the old puppies too. So I often return to my old machines to use them: 214, Legacy (John made a new one!), HamSanBen..., Wary... , a remastered Tahr6.0.2...
For my new laptop I have slacko6.9.9.9 now, or LxPupSc, both excellent.
I look at it this way: it is all puppy anyway.
