Subject description: by Internet Archive

The HTTP 404, 404 Not Found and 404 error message is a Hypertext Transfer Protocol standard response code, in computer network communications, to indicate that the client was able to communicate with a given server, but the server could not find what was requested. Wikipedia.

An ever growing number of websites go offline for x reason, lack of money, lack of interest, so when you search for content, some websites show 404 Not Found Error, and as time passes, such 404 Not Found Error occurs more often than just a few years ago. It is aggravating, because some content are still useful.

This addon comes to the rescue, showing the more recent Web archive available for a website, thanks to Internet Archive, all websites being saved with all their links.

There is a series of similar addons for Firefox, each competing for your interest, but only Wayback Machine is from Internet Archive.

A 404 error is an HTTP status code that means that the page you were trying to reach on a website couldn't be found on their server.

I don't understand the need for an app/addon for the wayback machine.
I must be in the stone age Smile

Any browser can do the wayback machine, no addons required.

https://betanews.com/2019/10/18/wayback-machine-2019/

According to the Internet Archive, the average webpage lasts just three months before being altered or deleted. To prevent this data being lost for good, the team’s Wayback Machine saves a copy of web pages across time, allowing visitors to see how a site has looked at various points in its history.

I’ve found the Wayback Machine to be an invaluable tool on numerous occasions, but it’s now getting even better.

You can use a bookmarklet to do the same thing.

No reason to assume the addon is untrustworthy, but ...

PostPosted: Sun 01 Mar 2020, 21:11    Post subject: Brave browser and the 404 error code
Subject description: Automatically detects when a webpage is unavailable and will offer to search the Wayback Machine

https://www.theverge.com/2020/2/26/21154096/brave-browser-wayback-machine-404-internet-archive-lost-pages
The Brave web browser can now automatically detect when a webpage is unavailable and will offer to search the Wayback Machine for a backup, the Internet Archive has announced. Although the 404 error code is the most well known, the announcement notes that the feature also works for 408, 410, 451, 500, 502, 503, 504, 509, 520, 521, 523, 524, 525, and 526 errors.

If you visit a missing page (such as this one) using Brave then the browser will generate a notification that reads “Sorry, that page is missing. Do you want to check if a saved version is available on the Wayback Machine?” Clicking the prompt takes you to an archived version of the page, where you can then scroll through different snapshots of the page taken over time. It makes it easier to find information that’s disappeared from the internet, regardless of whether it’s been deliberately removed or has just disappeared by accident.

Both firefox and palemoon have wayback machine addons, the latter requiring installation via the Classic Add-ons Archive.

Sorry, I'm not keen about Bravebrowser's filtering as to what websites I can visit, redirecting me to its choices. I much prefer making my own decisions by using Ublock Origin, Pup-Advert Blocker, Hosts, or some combination of them. Properly used in firefox, Bravebrowser affords no speed advantage.

Just checked.
Mozilla responded "Oops! We can’t find that page"

You can try the Resurrect Pages extension (covers The Internet Archive as well as a few other options). (There's also this, but I don't know offhand how it's different (or better?) than the original Resurrect Pages extension.)

The extension was in development well before Mozilla's switch-over, so you should be able to find an older version that works with PaleMoon and older versions of Firefox (I have it installed in PaleMoon as I'm typing this, in fact).

I'm not using it, but you could try the SeaMonkey version.
