autumnleaves wrote:Thanks for the advice about PPM. I always assumed that it was a safe source, but apparently it's just an invitation to problems.

I think the main problem with 6.05 was that I could not get the nvidia driver to install. I need it for my main application, and for general eye comfort.
I forgot at which version of puppylinux I switched my everyday computer from nvidia based desktop to amd based laptop.
I am not sure if I was using 32bit Tahr-6.0.5 with nvidia or amd.
I recall when using the nvidia computer I had general success using 32bit getnvidia.

You are our eyes. We only know what you tell us. :!: :!: :!:
f that is the case, what could the problem be? If not Wine, then Virtualbox, or are there issues with that as well?
Tahrpup is installed running in Virtualbox????

You installed Tahrpup64 as a frugal or full install?
If frugal, using a save file or a save folder?
What format is the installed location?

Do not get to hung up on using Wine stable versions.
The latest version of Wine has the best chance of being able to run stuff.

The latest versions of Puppy have changed Puppy a lot.

Try this version of Wine that has a version compiled for Tahrpup.

I have to ask.
You do understand how to install a pet package of a program?
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected

Thanks again for advice. Here's the answer to the first question.
root# winecfg
err:module:load_builtin_dll failed to load .so lib for builtin L"winemp3.acm": libmpg123.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
err:winediag:nulldrv_CreateWindow Application tried to create a window, but no driver could be loaded.
err:winediag:nulldrv_CreateWindow Unknown error (127).
Actually I meant that if Wine won't work, would VirtualBox be an alternative, though I vastly prefer not to use VB.

The install is Full with a Folder savefile on an ext3 partition in a 186 Gb drive.

I have installed many pet files so I suppose I know how, if you mean petget. Not so handy with command lines.

Thanks bigdog. Regarding a different version of Wine, which one of these would be appropriate?
wine-2.11_v3.1.pet _________ tahrpup 6.0.5 PAE [stripped=true]
wine-2.11_v3.2.pet _________ tahrpup 6.0.5 PAE [stripped=false]
wine_DEV-2.11_v3.1.pet ____ tahrpup 6.0.5 PAE
wine_DEV-2.11_v3.2.pet ____ tahrpup 6.0.5 PAE
On the other hand, if I can avoid getting into an endless uninstall loop because of dependencies I would certainly prefer that.

If you do not intend to submit bug reports to winehq.org, then wine-2.11_v3.1.pet should be sufficient.

Thanks version. Will it be necessary to uninstall 2.01 before installing 2.11?

I have read that some users install newer versions of wine without uninstalling the older versions.
I always uninstall old before installing new.

And do you run into a long string of files that are dependent and also need to be uninstalled?

Also, should it be uninstalled via the PPM?

I do not recall getting a long string of dependencies, but I do not generally use 64 bit Tahr.

When uninstalling, I recommend PPM [1] for that task.
For built-in packages, things that are not in the PPM 'Uninstall' list, I use:
Menu > Setup > Remove builtin packages

Could you copy and paste a list of the first set of dependencies that PPM is asking about?

[quoted post]

I am unfamiliar with Full installs.
I only use frugal installs, therefore all my comments are geared toward frugal installs.

Uninstalled 2.01 and Extras without issue, reinstalled 3.1 and extras. Still no wine functionality. I downloaded setup file for a simple windows app which I used previously with Wine and am unable to install now.

Just for the halibut I rebooted and Wine came to life, went looking for Mono and Gecko. Windows app installed with ease. I think we have liftoff.

Thanks for your patience and advice.

I suppose I'll need winetricks. Is there an off-PPM version I should look for?

The wine packages I compile have winetricks.
It is one file that gets installed to /usr/sbin/
I use:

Code: Select all

winetricks -h

Thanks version. I had just realized that tricks was built into this wine. I hope I'll never have need of most of the commands. However, are the windows fonts also installed with wine?

Is it advisable to self-update?

It appears some are.
/usr/share/wine/fonts/
https://wiki.winehq.org/Create_Fonts

I have installed various fonts using winetricks in troubleshooting attempts at getting various windows apps running.

On an unrelated matter. How do you suspend puppy on a desktop. On a laptop closing the cover apparently does it. Or does this just turn off the screen?

We the users of this forum are the only ones that can help to keep some order to it.
Please help!!

Please post a new question, as a new topic, in the Beginners section of the forum.

Multiple questions in a topic make it hard to follow.

Note:
If you are using a save folder than you have a frugal install of Tahrpup.
That is the best way to install Puppy Linux.

In the future ask questions or post problems in the Beginners or Users sections of the forum.

This section of the forum (Additional Software) is the place to actually post programs you compiled for Puppy.

Here is a good search site to use:
http://puppylinux.us/psearch.html
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
