I need a typing trainer for Puppy

#1 Post by sonox »

Hi folks,

I'm using Puppy in my school. I regularly get the request to make a typing trainer available.

It appears that none is currently available for Puppy.

In my research I came across a number of open source softwares:

- Ktouch
- Tipptrainer
- Tuxtype
- Typespeed

It appears that Tuxtype is rather popular.

Did I miss something? Is there a typing trainer available? How can I get one?

Kind regards,
Roman

@Roman,
What Puppy distro are you using?

I just compiled Tuxtype in Fatdog64-710 so it should be possible in other pups as well.

Source: https://sourceforge.net/projects/tuxtyp ... t/download

To make a pet package.
Load the devx.
Extract the source code.
Enter the top level directory where you see a file called configure.
Open a terminal in that directory and type the commands one at a time.

./configure --prefix=/usr --without-sdlpango
make
make DESTDIR=/root/tuxtype-1.8.0 install
dir2pet /root/tuxtype-1.8.0

If you just want to compile and install.

./configure --prefix=/usr --without-sdlpango
make
make install

I can do it for you if you let me know your version of Puppy.

Thanks for the fast reply!

Sounds great! I'm using Lupu 5.2.5.

I had a go and failed.

Why are you using such an old distro. It was a good one though, I used it for some time.

Maybe you can try gtypist here:
https://www.gnu.org/software/gtypist/

or typespeed:
http://typespeed.sourceforge.net/

or ztype (online):
http://zty.pe/

:D

Roman you can download gtypist on the link below.
http://www.smokey01.com/software/fun/gtypist-2.9.5.pet
It was compiled and tested in Lupu-5.2.5.

It's not as fancy as Tuxtype but it serves the same purpose.

@smokey01

Thanks a lot! I’ll check it out!

I really wish I could use a newer version of puppy. I opened a discussion on my issue a few days ago. Please check it out:

Roman, I don't like dumb computers beating me so I kept at it.

You can download tuxtype and the four required dependencies from the links below.

The SDL stuff was previously compiled by ttuuxxx.

http://smokey01.com/software/fun/tuxtyp ... -1.8.0.pet
http://www.smokey01.com/ttuuxxx/old-stu ... 3-i386.pet
http://www.smokey01.com/ttuuxxx/old-stu ... 6-i386.pet
http://www.smokey01.com/ttuuxxx/old-stu ... -smpeg.pet
http://www.smokey01.com/ttuuxxx/old-stu ... 9-i386.pet

Enjoy...

@smokey01

Thanks for keeping at it!

I'll try it this week together with gtypist and report back to you.

@smokey01

I have tested gtypist and tuxtype this morning.

gtypist is working perfectly.

tuxtype is not working yet. I downloaded and installed all 5 packages. When I launch tuxtype a windows opens just for a second and closes again... Any ideas?

Kind regards,
Roman

I found the fix for the issue with tux type here:

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=68875

It's a missing symlink in lupu.
