Wonderful Puppy. Version should be 5.8 with so many ideas included. Tiny changes, big effects. Better development than to jump from kernel to kernel, Csipesz knows what he changes, and why.

Hi csipesz,

On hamoudoudou's recommendation --see he is good for something -- I decided to see what this puppy could do. I had forgotten how versatile Precise was/is. After adding qt libs, required by masterpdfeditor and foxitreader, about the only applications significantly 'outdated' seem to be google-chrome and clones.

As PupSysInfo wasn't included, the only RAM usage gauge I had was HTop. According to it, Precise 5.7.1 Retro Minimal only used 63 Mbs on bootup.

I'll try to remember to recommend Precise 5.7.1 Retro Minimal as among the Puppies to consider for 'older computers' and those desiring 'speed demons'.

really on mikeslr's recommendation I threw a copy of your minimal Precise571, k3.2.48 barebones version onto a multiboot to test on an old Rocky II military laptop (2001) with specs listed in the subject line. IT WORKS! Most specifically, it properly loaded the opl3sa2/nm256 sound card /chip after a little tweaking with alsawizard. I have tried at least 10 other puplets on this machine without such success - THANK YOU!

Actually, I'm very surprised indeed to see it working with the opl3sa2 - I understand that official support for that chip ended in linux kernel 2.6.x or thereabouts - did you manually include the driver in your puplet perhaps??

All this working on a live boot, with a 214mb swap available. Love your selection of presets with PupRadio - Bonus! But when I tried to post this message from that machine, Palemoon refused to boot - I think because this old cpu has support only for SSE, not SSE2 as Palemoon requires. So I went to you PPM to download Opera etc, and no choices were available in your stripped-back environment.
I then started to update PPM, and got several databases downloaded however kept dropping out. When I tried "ppm" in terminal, the process stopped at

Could you test that this is not a problem with your distro, that PPM is not broken please? Cheers!

live and let die, Csipesz is very fond of updating his Puppies. He makes them to fulfill a CD, about 700MB..
Update the PPM for old version to get Your Puppy look in archives Ubuntu.
Mikeslr, using Puppies is as useful as building them. And feed backs are a pleasure for devs, at least for csipesz, if not in Murga forum, then in skamilinux team one, or in their numerous, daily posts on my facebook

As for opera, you can look for old versions maintained by opera, itself. Just download and unpack. They'll run from the resulting folder. opera 12.16 still does a quick and awesome job except for graphic-rich websites.

Sorry, figuring out what causes the PPM error you encountered is beyond my pay grade.

thumping away on the rubberied keys on the laptop in question - apologies for any typos...
The drama with the PPM I had earlier didn't reoccur after I opted to first create a save file - doh! Settling on csipesz' bareboones offering a permanent fixture on this Rocky II RT686 laptop - with old passive computer speakers attached, this old machine is *fanging* as a prettybloodygoodandnottooshabbyatall internet radio server. CHUFFED. Some of csipesz' station links are broken already and need new addresses - but can't be done without a working browser. Have installed Opera 12.16 - but it won't let me download the link you provided regarding the SSE-capable fork of palemoon. Currently downloading uget from PPM to get around such problems - wait I forgot wget onboard. Link appears invalid. Oh well - there's always slimboat to consider... Thanks very much for digging out that link! And cheers for the search engine - my signature is currently in arrears.
A note for csipesz - with PPM the "More info" button to enter the dialog to select co-dependencies doesn't seem to be working. Maybe I'll try out the fleshed-out 571retroPrecise to see how that compares...

Dogradio isn't working as expected - will have to go back to the forum thread for workarounds as it starts from terminal, but doesn't seem to go much further.

I agree: the old opera was both quick and secure. It can still be 'tweeked' for added security by going into the browser settings, opera:config - which are quite extensive.
