How to install a .deb package I downloaded?

#1 Post by J_D_ »

I downloaded a deb package from https://www.obdautodoctor.com/download. I am stuck. I extracted it and it shows up in my downloads as an extracted pet. I don't know how to do the install. It does not show up in the package manager.
Using 32 bit Tahrpup 6.05 Help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Why didn't you fix it? You can edit your posts in this forum. :)

It might help if you told us the exact package you downloaded.

It should install if you just left click on it. Forgive if you already tried that, but did you just try clicking on it?

Answer this?????

A deb package should just install if you keep it a .deb and not extract.

You may still need dependency files/programs to get it working after it installs.

@bigpup:-

bigpup, he's referring to the .deb package available for download on the webpage he linked to in his original post. Specifically, this one:-

obd-auto-doctor_3.3.0-1_i386.deb

I rather suspect J_D_ will have problems with this in Tahr, however, as in addition to libbluetooth3, it requires at least QT 5.2 or newer. I'm not certain whether anybody on the Forum has yet put together a package for this new a version of QT...

EDIT:- J_D_, you'll need this package from the Tahr repo:-

http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pe ... 1_i386.sfs

It's pretty hefty, at around 59MB. Phil's also added the QT 5.51 package, too.....but that's a real monster, tipping the scales at just under 300 MB..!!

Seems like overkill for a .deb package of just 1.2 MB in size.....

I haven't checked yet, but you ought to able to obtain libbluetooth3 from the PPM. And as dancytron said, the normal method for installing a .deb in Tahr is simply to left-click it.....just as you would for a Windows .exe file. Anyway, hope that helps..!

Thanks for the replies. Just clicking does nothing. Left or right. Clicking it not extracted it gets the option to install but the install fails every time.

Mike Walsh, the bluetooth is not required. It will also run on WiFi. Ive used it on a Windows OS . I will look into the downloads you posted. Probably will not have time today but I will look and report back.

For the record, this is just another attempt to get away from Windows. I dont hate Windows but I much prefer Puppy, any version.

Thanks, again.

What exactly does it do?
Any error messages trying to do the install?
Got about 3 times the free space, as the size of the deb package, on the place you are trying to install?

We only know what you tell us!!

Try the install after a fresh reboot of Tahrpup.
This gets it to a clean state with memory.

I am running Xenialpup64 7.0.8.5
I have it setup to also be able to run 32bit programs.

Installed OK for me, and put entry in the menu->Utility.
It needs a dependency file to run.
See error run in terminal.

I have about 20 gigs free space. If I click to install, a window just says that it failed to install. The console does not open.

I tried it in Tahrpup 6.0.6 it is only a small update to Tahrpup 6.0.5

It installed for me.

My Tahrpup is a frugal install.
Using a save folder.

How is your Tahrpup 6.0.5 installed?
If frugal.
Using save file or folder?
If save file. How much free space in it?

Where is the Obdautodoctor .deb package downloaded to?

Give specific details on all questions.

WiFi works fine. Nifty little program .
For the record, I did delete it and do a fresh download last night. I had downloaded this a couple months ago and played around with it and just got back to it this week.

THANKS to all.

Trying to install OpenRA on puppy

Hello there, i am having a problem when i try to install OpenRA on puppy.

I downloaded the .deb file

In Lubuntu clicking on the package will auto install the repositories/dependencies.

In puppy, After clicking the debian package, it shows it is installing, but how do i check if it install the dependency files? It gives an error to run after installing.

Thank you,

Regards,

Zazu

Here's the kicker: Download that deb package ... and do extract it before installing on Puppy!
Once it's extracted, go to:
obd-auto-doctor_3.3.0-1_i386/DEBIAN/control and have a close look at what the Depends line says:

Code: Select all

Package: obdautodoctor
Version: 3.3.0-1
Installed-Size: 4196
Section: non-free/utils
Priority: optional
Architecture: i386
Depends: libqt5gui5 (>= 5.2.1), libqt5widgets5 (>= 5.2.1), libqt5network5 (>= 5.2.1), libbluetooth3, libc6
Maintainer: OBD Auto Doctor Support <support@obdautodoctor.com>
Description: OBD Car Diagnostics Software
Get to know your car better by using OBD Auto Doctor diagnostic scan tool software.
As you will see, all the dependencies are listed there. On a normal Debian system, they will get resolved automatically - that's the magic of Debian package management. Puppy has no such magic to put it charitably. So, a prudent way to proceed would be: 1) extract the deb package 2) read the control file to determine the dependencies and 3) install those dependencies separately before installing the deb file.

ytszazu,

Welcome to Puppy land.

You need to start your own topic about your specific problem.

Give us some information.

What Puppy version?
How it is installed?
Full or frugal?
Installed on what storage device?
It gives an error to run after installing.
Do you think we can guess what the error was   :?:

We only know what you tell us!!!!!!!

anikin's info is good to know to get you pointed in the correct direction.

Good tip!!
Thanks!
