AMD rage xl pci (rev27)

What works, and doesn't, for you. Be specific, and please include Puppy version.

AMD rage xl pci (rev27)

I've just downloaded Simplicity 16.01 32bit desktop for a very old HP Vectra. I can't get xwin to start. I suspect it's my video card. It works on Ubuntu derivatives, but I want something lighter. Any ideas?

Simplicity is not really Puppy.
How it boots and works is up to the developers of Simplicity.

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

For Puppy specific version to try.

Tahrpup 6.0.5
Slacko 5.7
Precise 5.7.1

That video hardware is so old that the generic Vesa driver is probably what will work.

These Puppy versions should try to use the Vesa driver when you first boot them.
