It was? I just did this build, if I recall correctly, only 9-10 days ago. Was it fixed after and/or before then? No, wait, Phil, I remember correctly now, just did another build 4 days ago, and that dpup-stretch PPM is throwing the same darn message problem. I wonder, is it specific to the dpup-stretch build + debian-repos? If you use PPM and install anything from regular pup repos, there's no messages. The problem (and those messages) happen if you install something from Debian-repos. At least I think, lol, that is what is going on

Wooohooo...Radky!!! :D :D

And thanks Phil for letting me know. :) I am putting Radky's changes in right now and am going to boot up (a fresh frugal install) and see if the pinboard msg issue is gone for good.

I really like DreamChess!

But for me it's rather distracting if it looks like this (spinning board) I can't think!! :) :
Image

Found solution here:
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1560512

Code: Select all

sh -c 'SDL_JOYSTICK_DEVICE=/dev/null dreamchess'
Workaround for some HP/Compaq laptops
I'm using Compaq 6710b laptop

PS: Also nice opportunity to show off my new invention to add animated gif to a message

Fred

Three things:

1) First, that is seriously cool 8) ....a GIF posted to murga and it works? James (from Fatdog) did something similar from 3-4 weeks ago, and a couple of us asked him how he did it. I tried to follow what he wrote, but failed miserably. You gotta teach me some day, because that is cool!

2) How on Earth did you get the DreamChess to spin? I just tried it on 2 different computers, and I can't get it to do it. That spinning is wild, and would seriously increase the difficulty, lol, especially if I was having a beer and losing at the same time.

3) Fred, on a serious note, can you test something for me? I downloaded Firefox, Palemoon (and still have the QtWeb), they all installed fine (of course having the DEVX loaded), and they run great----but they all share a problem: for example, when signed into murga, and I want to upload a pic, and I click on the "Browse" button to look for a file on my system, every one of the browsers immediately crashes as soon as I click this button. I cannot for the life of me figure this out. I know it is something, but what? Is it unique to something I did or installed (the new browsers), or loading the DEVX, or....gulp.....is it a problem everyone has in the ISO I uploaded. Could you check and see if you can post any pic from dpup-stretch-700-Deluxe using any browser?? Thanks (another GIF would be cool)

Like Fred mentioned it is only a problem on some computers and specifically some manufactured by HP. I had the same problem on installing Dreamchess to my HP Elitebook laptop a few years ago and found same solution about joystick device (depite there being no joystick attached to machine).

Fiirst used weX, made screencast using "Area", then used "gifenc" to convert to .gif (this is for high quality gif, size will be much higher in most cases than the max size this forum allows to upload as attachment, so I uploaded the DreamChess gif file (size=1.9MB) to dropbox and added link in my message)

2) William already answered
3) Ok, will test tomorrow, with the QTweb browser I know for sure it crashes when clicking the Open file button, my (successful) workaround was drag'ndrop the other browsers don't know yet.

I think this was fixed when Devuan 7.0.0 switched to 7.0.0a1. Unfortunately I think stretch was always called a1

The workaround for this PPM mess is not bad. You just have to load the DEVX.sfs before you open & want to install anything from PPM. Doing this, then anything you install will do so without the constant "OK" msgs popping up for you to click to continue PPM's install. After the install finishes, unload the DEVX.sfs, and you're good to go. I will try to get this PPM behavior (something I thought was fixed) corrected in the next ISO upload.
Yes. I think removing the "dev," from the end of this line might add elfutils to the main sfs (but haven't tested yet)

Hi Sailor!

Thanks for the detailed stuff to look at. I took a quick look at the DISTRO-PKGS-SPECS glib line, and it seems I have the new one (all the "green" corrections). Still, I'm going to look closer tomorrow with fresher eyes. The ole' orbs are at the moment getting heavy, bleary and things going cross-eyed here. See ya tomorrow, and thanks again.

Hi Fred & all,

False alarm about browsers and uploading when clicking on any site's "Browse" button to upload and watching the browser immediately crash/shutdown. Whew, lol

The only way thus occurs (which I had did yesterday) is if you do this: to remove "pcmanfm" completely via the main-menu-SETUP-Remove Builtin Packages (RBP). RBP quickly removed pcmanfm, nothing else, but sure enough it caused all browsers to immediately crash when on a website and clicking their 'browse' and/or 'upload' buttons. Pcmanfm is needed in some way for HTML-web-pages 'browse' or 'upload' clickable buttons to work. Wish it wasn't so, and it could be ROX, but I haven't yet figured out how to make this change and/or if it is even possibe.

Anyone have any hints and/or clues how to do this? As I would like to have pcmanfm completely removed from dpup-stretch until maybe woof-CE makes it function correctly (like having full right-click control, and not just partial) in ALL woof-CE builds and not just some. If I could get pcmanfm to work like Peebee does in his great builds, it'd be a no-brainer. But Peebee has magical tricks up his sleeve---for a lot of stuff

So, for dpup-stretch, how do I get ROX to take away this html-web-site clickable-buttons-requirement from pcmanfm?

Here's a browse/click/pic/upload test, for my own sanity, testing Palemoon installed via the included script in dpup-stretch-700-DELUXE (pic has dejan's great cube modded/warped with Fotoxx, a graphics program I put in this build):

I don't know anything about the Cherrytree menu on your system, but I have to say I love that Cherrytree program. I never took to Notecase but Cherrytree is wonderful IMO.

In fact I'm using it for pretty much everything I do now. Even if I bother putting Geany on my system, still I tend to copy into Cherrytree (of course can also use Cherrytree to link to existing documents. Has syntax highlighting for many programming languages so good for that too.

I'm using current latest Ubuntu version 0.38.0-1) in both my XenialDog and dCore-xenial installations from PPA here:

Good Morning Belham,

Here's (see attached) gtk2 yad built on dpup-stretch (binary)
And (for fun :) here some animated gifs (installed weX on your dpup-stretch, made screencast using "Area" and used gifenc):
Image

Image

Dogradio works/looks better with this yad (setting theme, e.g. dark theme works)
Btw, dogradio is not properly installed on your dpup-stretch (e.g. folder /usr/local/.dogradio is missing)
I removed ~/.dogradio first and installed dogradio_0.0.7b_i386.deb from here, and works fine

Hi Fred,

Those gifs are great. Going to work on trying my own in a bit, see if i can do it.

Also, regarding DogRadio, I am not sure why you say it isn't installed correctly? I've been using it all morning (in fact, been using it for the past couple of weeks in this dpup) and it works great, playing all stations, saving whatever new ones I grab, etc, etc. What's not working?? Is it really a problem if the .dogradio folder is in /root as opposed to /usr/local?? I"ll look closer and see if I can understand whats going on, and then make the change inclusive for the next upload.

This morning, I have installed and been playing with Radky's excellent fbbox 4.0 window manager. Had to manually install it though...even with DEVX loaded, it didn't go correctly trying to use the .pet he has. Fbbox is really nice, and offers a quite interesting take on the main menu and sub-menus. The Fbbox Control Center is super. I think if I can iron everything out----problem is, people (not radky) when they test this stuff or use it, they don't test/use every possible thing in it, along with furthermore flopping back and forth between window managers making sure everything in both, not just one, STILL work. I am going to include it also in the next ISO upload if I can get everything worked out. Right now, I've found conkylive problems and its transparency background issues...if I could just figure out why conky transparency (when running fbbox) no longer works but keeps defaulting to a dead grey colour when flopping to fbbox, but yet works fine when flopping back to JWM, I'll have most of the issues licked for including it in dpup-stretch-700-DELUXE

Thanks again!

Well yes, that's right, it should work well also if only ~/.dogradio exists.
But after I replaced /usr/bin/yad, the theme settings still didn't work (don't know why actually), so I thought starting "fresh" by deleting the ~/.dogradio config folder, but that didn't work out as expected (/usr/local/.dogradio should be copied to $HOME first time use).
In general btw, I think it's not good that a program depends too much on configuration files in the user's directory.

(sorry, no gif this time :) next time better  )

radky's fbbox-4.0 window manager

#45 Post by belham2 »

Wow, radky created something really nice, his "FbBox-4.0 FbPanel & Openbox Desktop Environment". Been playing with it all morning, installed it to dpup-stretch-700-DELUXE manually (using the .pet on radky's thread didn't work fully, so installed it manually and it works great). This is really nice, so it is going to be put in the next ISO I upload (along with other fixes). You'll have a choice of this and/or JWM. The Control Center in FbBox is super (check the 2nd pic below)!

Not only the web browsers, it happens with Geany, with Xarchiver, with LibreOffice...

Other apps that use a different file open dialog (like mtPaint, mtCell or InkscapeLite) do not have this problem.

I have unistalled pcmanfm through RBP, but no way, the apps still crash.

Some missing lib, perhaps?

Galbi,

Oh no,    through language barrier I am afraid you did EXACTLY opposite of what you were supposed to do.

PCManFM cannot be removed. It cannot be touched. I was describing how I created the situation I did, and it was BECAUSE I had removed PCManFM that the behavior was happening. Since you removed PCManFM, it is going to affect a ton of things.

Argh. And I do not think you can re-install PCManFM now, and just be ok. Try this first:

1) Load the DEVXvia SFS-Load before you do anything

2) Go into PPM, and see if you can install PCManFM.

3) If any message comes up through PPM, click "OK". If not, fully wait for PPM to finish.

4) Then use SFS-Load to to unload the DEVX.

5) Reboot.

6) And see (hopefully) everything is back to normal.

Please accept my apology for not writing clearly  in the previous messages for what a 'user' is supposed to do and "not supposed" to do.

Let me know what happens when you do the above 6 steps.

Can you check in PPM if you have package "libglib2.0-0_2.50.3-1" installed?
(It's depencency of many programs)
If so, try to uninstall it and see if the problem is still there.
I had the same problem and solved it that way by uninstalling (it's safe because the libglib2.0 library is already built in, but in another directory, so in fact "double installed" which may be the reason for the crashing, not sure, just guessing)

Hi Belham,

Very strange, I uninstalled pcmanfm also from "remove-builtin-packages" (just to test) and all "Open File" dialogs are still working fine for me.
These "Open File" dialogs are not depending on any file-manager to have installed, I'm almost sure.
Probably what I wrote in my previous (and earlier) post is more close to what's the problem (libglib2.0).
If you don't have libglib2.0 installed (through PPM) just try to install it and you''ll probably see the crashing of all programs when using "Open File" dialog (anyway it was for me). Can you test that?

Fred
