AtomicPup2020 Released

#1 Post by 8Geee »

***Jan.08,2020 UPDATE ***

AtomicPup2020 is an update to version 18 and XIX based upon 01micko's
original Slacko5.7-i686-4G-noPAE (32bit) puppy. Sailor Enceladus has provided
an update to 01micko's original using a supported kernel (3.18.106). For those
people that DO NOT have an Atom CPU, this new update is urged, as it has on-
going patches to the Meltdown/Spectre problems. Slacko5.7.1-woofCE
by sailor enceladus can be found here. I will no longer maintain my
updated original version, as it is vunerable to the Meltdown/Spectre syndrome.
This decision is in the best interest of all.

================================================================================

It is intended that AtomicPup2020 be installed to a USB Flash drive. The included
Gparted will make the 768Mb partition as ext3, and set the 'boot' flag. Do this
when still on 1st CD start. Then install, and do a shutdown. Set the save-file
as ext3, and 256Mb. Note: security must be set as none or normal.

AtomicPup2020 will be my sole spin, naming will avoid confusion. It is a contin-
uation of 'EONS' with security patches supplied by Slackware. WGET is at version 1.19.5.

AtomicPup2020 has the following elements

CPU: Intel Atom before 2013 (N2600/N2800 is last CPU)
kernel: 3.4.82 (out of support)
*** new *** wget 1.19.5
bash 4.1.017 (from Slackware 13.37, same source as original slacko5.7)
*** new *** OpenSSL 1.0.2p (from Slackware 14.2, updates MUST occur at slackware.com)
with thanks to HoerMirAuf for the upgrade pet.

browser FireFox27.0.1 (FF27) configured for security and privacy
Addons: AdBlock Edge, Searchonymous, Redirect Cleaner, Better Privacy, Youtube
All HTML5, Download YouTube as MP4, and FireFTP 2.0.19 (this one is optional).
Security: TLS1.2 with forward secrecy is the only permitted type.
I do not expect TLS1.3 for Older FireFoxes (TLS1.3 support begins at FF49).
*** new *** Javascript: enabled, but does not cache data.
For a longer list of changes type about:support in the browser address bar.

The Office is SoftMaker-FreeOffice version 6.97 (before WIN10). It has been
trimmed to one language (enUS) and is quite small. WordProcessor, SpreadSheet,
and Slide-Presentation are included. This is the only way I can distribute
without a key. The enUS Manual in pdf is a separate download. You may remove the
Office if not needed. Open /opt and delete all files within, then open /root
(show hidden files) removing .softmaker, and remove the two desktop icons. Done.

avidemeux 2.5.5s video editor included
fonts are Liberation Sans/Serif/Mono, Overpass, and Digital-7 (UTF-8 encoding)
*** new is monaco.ttf that is default leafpad and Geany font with thanks to musher0 ***
paint is mtpaint 3.44.48
python 2.6 and 2.7
video-drivers OTHER THAN i915 have been removed (i965 can be requested)
ALL shares and servers have been removed including SAMBA.
*** If you need shares/servers, use the new slacko5.7 by sailor enceladus above.

CUPS 1.4.8 using foomatic2xxx-2014.04.26 by rcrsn51 and thanks. This will allow
newer Laserjet Printers by HP to be used. His repo is broken/removed, so I
uploaded my copy of his foomatic (xqx and zjs included) to archive.org.

iso size is about 150Mb and minimum partition size is 768Mb using 256Mb save.
In general, one does not need a swap-file, but an eeePC 2G-surf might.

AtomicPup backgrounds are in /root/my-applications/MyFiles
Original SlackoPup5.7 backgrounds remain in their original locations.

So... one can surf the net and have some music/video with editing. You can
hazard on-line purchases and banking and passwords with good security.
Just a reminder to use encrypted wifi, this spin has the WPA2 supplicant
security patch (version 2.6 by Slackware) but the 'host side' is still a ?.

The postings concerning AtomicPup2020 begin here.

AtomicPup2020 can be found here.

AtomicPup Office enUS manuals are here.

Making the Mini-eee

#2 Post by 8Geee »

EDITED Apr. 2, 2018

The mini-eee can be made from the EONS version by simply removing the contennts of the /opt directory, then navigate to /root and show the hidden files... the .softmaker directory can be deleted in full. The iso will be reduced to about 137Mb when remastered.

Correction to sums for FO697 manuals

#3 Post by 8Geee »

There is a bug here, in that I inadvertantly uploaded the suums for the FULL FO697.
The correct sums are INSIDE eons.txt

Putting these spins through their respective paces for their purposes, I have found that the main eee-spin does not print to foomatic (xqx and zjs are already installed) printers such as hp printers. The mini version is designed as a surfing distro, so its not that important. But the EONS and eee versions should have printing capacity. And they don't.

To make a long and twisted Puppy-tale short, it turns out the bad-guy here is...
BASH.

BASH was upgraded as a result of the Shellshock bug in Oct. 2014 to the Slackware recommended 4.2.53. This broke the printing through CUPS/gutenprint. Gutenprint was removed thinking THAT had broken. The reload of it did not go through the remaster process. And thus no print on these spins.

Well, I got around to it, and hunted down the problem. The original Slacko5.7 by 01micko was fully updated via Slackware. There was NO update for BASH in the list this time around. All of these updates went smoothly, with only minor symlink patches. Annnnd, the printer works. Just remove the larger video drivers for the eeePC version, and that is fixed.

So both the main slacko5.7-2017 and the eee-2017 versions are fixed using the original BASH 4.1.0(2). The mini-eee version will stay with the Slackware invoked
4.2.53 BASH, but will not print (tantalizingly close, just a no transmit of data to printer, but CUPS finds and installs it)

That leaves EONS in a quandry, as it is inteended to be full-service in a small footprint. But no printing seems a waste. So I reverted it to BASH 4.1.0 and all is well.

BUT, one must operate behind a firewall at all times, and not use an unsecured wifi connection. Ethernet behind router is acceptable, but wifi is VERY DICEY.

Although this is a rather focused thread, your thoughts on this stuff is appreciated.

I noticed your new signature says Slacko57-ff23. Did you find an annoyance with Firefox 27 and revert back to 23? Just curious.

Printing fixed in EONS version

#7 Post by 8Geee »

As the subject indicates, BASH was reverted to allow EONS to function with printers.
The first post in the thread is now updated with mini-eee and EONS downloads.

The full eeePC version is now coupled with the updated version of Slacko5.7

There is an update to rxvt in the Slackware updates.
This can be ignored as Slacko5.7 is using Urxvt (unicode-rxvt).
All that is presently installed is a symlink from rxvt to urxvt, and thats all that is needed.

EeePC 1018P

#10 Post by sheldonisaac »

Please excuse: I don't know exactly where to ask about this.

Yesterday I got an EeePC 1018P, and have put tahr 6.0.6 on it.

Could someone please advise as to whether that OS, or something else, would be good to use?

Please tell me what additional info I should supply.
At the moment, I can think of 250GB spinning disk, 2GB memory, 1.66GHz Atom N455 CPU.

Thank you,
Sheldon

Have you tried any one of my spins (Slacko5.7 type) on that netbook?

Eee PC 1018P

Regards,
No, 8Geee, but I will now. I'm on my regular computer, and will try to use the netbook to get your mini-eee. I'll report back soon, I hope.

I was quite upset to find that the EeePC was very slow on the Internet.
I don't know why it's so slow.

It had some Ubuntu and WIndow 7 starter version when I got it, and I stupidly made it useless while trying to shrink partitions.
So I wiped the drive, and put on Tiny7 Windows and Puppy.

I don't recall whether it was slow before I messed it up.

--------------------------
UPDATE: I downloaded
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 140414976 May 21 17:07 /mnt/sda5/mini57-17b.iso
and now have

# ls -l /mnt/sda3/mini-eee/
total 136864
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1925689 Mar 12 17:20 initrd.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 134955040 Mar 12 17:20 puppy_slacko_5.7.sfs
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3109728 Mar 12 17:20 vmlinuz

Booted to desktop; kind-of slow at depmod?

Am in the ff27 now. It took a long time to appear, after I clicked the icon.

expat update

#13 Post by 8Geee »

A reminder that slackware has published an update to expat (XML parser/handler).
This update needs a symlink in usr/lib. Toss the old 1.6.2 version after installation, then make a symlink from 1.6.4 back to 1.6.2. This symlink fix is necessary.

The usr/doc files may be deleted, and root/.packages needs the new version moved to builtin_packages (the old one can be removed).

tcpdump repair

#14 Post by 8Geee »

As of today 25/07/17 there is a bugfix at slackware.
It seems that tcpdump's last patch (4.9.0) has a bug that allows a DoS.
The Patch has been fixed as tcpdump4.9.1.

This problem exists in all 4 of my spins, and needs to be serviced.

Upon D/L from Slackware
navigate to usr/sbin and delete tcpdump4.9.0
make a relative link (R-Click on tcpdump4.9.1) and rename the link to tcpdump4.9.0
Click OK (this is all necessary as theres two active tcpdumps)

You may remove the usr/doc files, and MOVE root/.packages/tcpdump4.9.1_files to the "builtin" folder.

@sheldonisaac

Yes, FF27 is slowto start. ABE has to load (About 9.5Mb). Once started, its faster.
DEPMODE occurs during cd/dvd operation only. Once transferred to USB stick, the layered file system is faster. Placing your personal files in /mnt/home will also ease burdens on the system.

Pelo

dont feel alone !

hello 8Geee, pelo back again on your puppies, which i remember. That is something nice for you. There are many that pass and go away without leaving you any souvenir.
I must admit that I don't care of date of release of distros. On the contrary i should say as a french wine, the older are the best
mini-eee2.iso: 133 M this one is running in my isobooter pendrive. AH i like a lot the colours. I will pick up theme to decorate the sad Slacko born last years
Users now don't post a lot.. Linux students can work quiet. No questions posted by newbies about trouble. It looks like only linux people have troubles;.
I feel ad when our Puppy builders don't have any feed back, even from colleagues.
About my screenshot, these things are ubknown. Are they really useful.. I ignore.
Of course i install firefox 17.0.11 ESR, because a brower is the main application when you pay for a wireless connection.
About isobooter, it's really a nice tool to test fast several OS, even Ubuntu.. No longer use virtualbos. These 19k0 do as well, they do even better.

curl update

#19 Post by 8Geee »

Recently there has been an update to curl 7.51 --> 7.55. There are security concerns in how the certificates are handled, and a few errors.

NOTE: if you get a "broken link" error in the Updates Package in Slacko 5.7, please
use this link. Answer "Yes" and the Puppy Package Manager will install the update. You may remove the /usr/doc files, and place the "curl7.55_files" in /root/.config into the built_in folder.

YouTube Videos fix

#20 Post by 8Geee »

Recently I have noticed that YouTube has refused to play in all four spins.

There is a fix for this with a few quirks;
1.) Videos will not play in a new tab.
2.) Videos are not paused at start.
3.) The gear icon at lower right of video must be used to turn off
annotations and autoplay.

By pausing the Vid, the settings in item 3 can be changed. Then resume play.

To accomplish this;
1.) Disconnect from internet
2.) Open Firefox and click OK in "not connected" dialog.
3.) Click on TOOLS. Select Add-ons. Find YouTube ALL HTML5 2.1.3,
and Click on PREFERENCES.
a.) UNCHECK Disable SPF
b.) CHANGE Internet Explorer to API by clicking on the API option.

4.) Open a new tab using the "+" at top of page, and close the other tab.
5.) In the address bar type about:config and click OK
6.) In the search bar type media
7.) Scroll to media.mediasource.enabled and double-click to "TRUE"
8.) Close Firefox
9.) Goto MENU ---> SHUTDOWN and select "Restart Graphical Server"

Step 9. is needed in case FF hangs on closure (it does sometimes when
there are setting changes).

When you connect to the internet you can try the settings at YouTube.
The unsupported whine can be ignored using the "NO THANKS" button.
