Alternative power option RPi3

#1 Post by Sage »

Another way to power RPi3 is to release pins yellow and adjacent black leads from any 4-pin Molex PSU FDD connector (wrap them in tape or insert in spare connector) . The remaining red and black leads in the plug will fit directly over pin4 & pin6 on the GPIO connector. Enables redeployment of surplus AT & ATX PSU for the hungrier v.3 Pi. Since few use a FDD any longer, could fit entire RPi inside/alongside any cased PC (or even outside with hole drilled to send the power connector through) for simultaneous operation. Very convenient for file transfers, etc.
No gripes about lack of amps from plug-in 5V unit, especially if GPIO is powering ancillary equipment like DAC/ADC/camera/display & co.
