Gtklist is used by other programs, too.
If you would uninstall PSI, those program would stop working with gtklist included.

PSI is meanwhile part of ezpup, a big pet that allows to enhance Puppy in one step with all required dependencies included.

The borderless window just tells you, that PSI started.
The lists are meanwhile so huge, that it takes 15 seconds on my notebook, until the final window becomes visible.

In my puplett Muppy I add such startmessages to all slow programs like firefox, PSI or openoffice. So that you don't wonder why nothing happens, and click again and again on the startentry in the menu.
I took this idea from Ecopup.

I love the Puppy Software Installer, I am however curious, how much work would be involved in showing the programs that were all ready installed to the LIVE CD, and let you un-install the packages you don't want? Of course hiding, or setting critical files that would break PUPPY to be grayed out?

I'll give it a try.
I plan a rewrite of PSI in the next weeks using GtkBasic.

I want to speed it up, and add localization.
Then I could add that.

I cannot give you a date yet, when it will be done.

.deb support is not available, as some dependencies miss in newer versions of Puppy.
You could try to install pb_debianinstaller and dillo.
That might work, but is no longer supported. It also might not work at all. I do not recommend it!
Since Puppy 3, the use of "gslapt" is recommended, instead.
You can install it too with PSI.
It gives full access to the repositories of Linux-Slackware 12, that is binary compatible with Puppy 3.

That would be great, Mark. PSI.07 just stopped working in my Puppy 3.01 installation. Refuses to download package lists even though I can manually download them with Gftp.

I checked the download script and it still says 30 for the timeout so I have no idea why. I've reloaded Gtklist and Getdir then reloaded PSI. No joy. Gui opens but no packages listed.

WhoDo , have you clicked on "mirrors"?
This should update the mirrorlist.

Sorry, must catch the train.
I will have a look when I'm back online in 1-2 weeks.
Until then you might look, if you find any difference to the one in Muppy 008.
Please also look, if /tmp is empty and has no entry left from MU-Toolbox.

Wish you a happy christmas and happy new year,

Mark

No need, Mark. I solved it. I was unaware that rxvt was a dependency for both PSI and PETget. When I installed mrxvt I renamed rxvt so as not to have mrxvt replace/overwrite it. I forgot to rename it back to the original. All fixed now.

Thanks mate (...and thanks Henry for checking).

Mark,

I have (as usual) been making extensive use of PSI and I have noticed that it no longer opened the htm "hint" files as it used to do. I did my own research and found the install script was calling dillo. I changed that to netsurf and we're back in business.

I just thought you'd like to know for your proposed rewrite.

Cheers

Dingo & PSI

#119 Post by Fishy »

Hi Mu

Would PSI work in Dingo Alpha6? I have found it (early kernel) to work without a problem but would like to get xmms working in it. I have to admit this is the first Puppy installation where multimedia seems to work out of the box. So far flawlessly.

Thanks for Muppy-mini - running on another partition. :)

Dingo has no support for dotpups.
As PSI is just a grafical interface for Puppys inbuilt scripts, you had to add them manually.
You had to copy from Muppy/Puppy 3 the /usr/sbin/dotpuprox.sh and install puppybasic and "gettext" from Barrys Repos.

Then it might work, but I did not check that yet.

I updated the version for Puppy 3.
It now starts quicker.
On my system, the old one needed 70 seconds to start, this now is reduced to 30 seconds.
Details about the change:

Mark, there is still a problem with this version in your install script. It calls dillo for htm files when Puppy 3 has netsurf. Substituting the browser name resolves the problem and you can again click on htm files in PSI and get the appropriate link or explanation file.
