Remember that devx thingy? Is it loaded?

Does VLC run and play videos?

Wanna take an easier route.. One where you can load-on-the-fly?

And is that a save file or folder you opted for?

If a file, how big? Folders are expandable..

Do you think I should download the Ubuntu based version ? Will that be easier to use/maintain ?

Slacko, Tahr.. It depends on which one likes your hardware. There is no best.

If you continue for a moment, provided the session you're in has been saved @ least once, you may learn something.

==

Go into Setup and open SFS_Manager.. Grab those compatibility libs'n load'm. The devx too.

Then dwnld this and stick it in /mnt/home.. Or anywhere if this is a RAM session.

Rt-clk and "sfs_load."

Let the auto-menu stuff finish in the background, then open VLC in your menu and give it a spin.

==

Slacko >> Tahr.

I have installed Tahr64. No more worries with VLC. As you know it comes pre installed.

But I am having issues with screen resolution. I will create a thread for it.

Thanks for your time.

No worries Mate.

As for your resolution issue, try the 32b version of Tahr.

Two reasons.. The problem may not be present and you won't notice any difference in speed.

Pelo

Xenial Pup 7.0.1 has VLC pre-installed too..

LxPup Xenial 7.0.1 has VLC pre-installed too.. Ok for music from your computer. For tahr Puppy Linux has a lot of apps.
For CD and DVDs, the choice is much less (working well, of course)
Why Xenial rather than Thar ? some video players appeared in Ubuntu PPM as Bino 3D (but will play 2D), Alexandra (collection manager and player)
SMplayer with Qt..

Just for anybody who might be interested, the version of VLC in the Racy 5.5 repos doesn't appear to work.

However, I have found that the portable Windows version of VLC, running under WINE, works fine. It's available from PortableApps.com:-

https://portableapps.com/

Of course, this is only really practical if you already have WINE running for other stuff..... :lol: I tried Oscar's self-contained 'no-libs' version of VLC:-

http://smokey01.com/OscarTalks/vlc-2.1. ... ps-s14.sfs

.....but I think it was compiled under a newer glibc. Anyway, it doesn't work either. Racy, of course, only has glibc 2.11.

EDIT:- I've just discovered that the Windows portable version of SMPlayer also works fine in Racy running under WINE....

The nice thing about these Windows Portable Apps is that because they're completely self-contained, along with Data and Prefs folders, etc, you can shut 'em down in the middle of listening to an album, or watching a film.....and when you start them up again, you can continue from the exact same point again.

Which is, I have to confess, pretty neat. Just another demonstration that there's no point being so dogmatic about stuff that you shoot yourself in the foot every time. If a Linux app does what you want, great. If a Windows app under WINE works for you.....use it.

Every OS has its good and bad points. The trick is to combine all the good bits together to form an amazing whole..!

Mike. :wink:
